Review of the new Karate Kid movie [ENG-ESP]

There are classics of classics and one of them is Karate Kid, I did not know that a new movie would be released this year and the last one that came out in 2010 I liked it a lot, the protagonist was younger than Daniel LaRusso in the first installment of 1984 (41 years ago) and seeing Jackie Chan as Mr. Han in the role of the Shifu who would lead Dre (Jaden Smith) to victory, I loved it, I confess I like Mr. Han and this one I have seen several times, but we are clear that the first ones with Mr. Miyagi and Daniel LaRusso are the most remembered, I loved it, I confess that I like Jackie Chan movies and I have seen this one several times, but we are clear that the first ones with Mr. Miyagi and Daniel LaRusso are the most remembered.

When I saw the poster with Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio I wanted to see it, although I did not have very high expectations, because I imagined that they were going to try to give the two characters a meaningless protagonism and well, I was not very wrong with that. Let’s say that some characters were too much and what they did was to make us remember an era but if they hadn’t been there, they wouldn’t have been necessary 🤭.

Existe clásicos de clásicos y uno de ellos es Karate Kid, no sabía que se estrenaría una nueva película este año y la última que salió en el 2010 a mí me gustó bastante, el protagonista tenía menos edad que Daniel LaRusso en la primera entrega de 1984 (hace 41 años) y ver a Jackie Chan como el Sr Han en el papel del Shifu que llevaría a la victoria a Dre (Jaden Smith), me encantó, confieso que me gustan las películas de Jackie Chan y está la he visto varias veces, pero estamos claro que las primeras con él Sr Miyagi y Daniel LaRusso son las más recordadas.

Cuando vi en el póster en la que aparece Jackie Chan y Ralph Macchio de una vez me dieron ganas de verla, aunque no tenía las expectativas muy altas, pues me imaginaba que iban a tratar de darle a los dos personajes un protagonismo sin sentido y bueno tampoco fue que me equivoqué mucho con eso. Digamos que algunos personajes estuvieron de más y lo que hicieron fue hacernos recordar una época pero que si no hubieran estado pues no hubieran hecho falta 🤭.

The story is about Li (Ben Wang), a boy who is Mr. Han’s nephew, who now has a Kung Fu school in Beijing, where he teaches with the techniques he taught Dre. Li must move with his mother to the United States, where his mother expects him to leave martial arts aside and have a new start, but problems follow him and he ends up teaching speed to a boxer who has money problems and having conflicts with the boyfriend of the boxer’s daughter who happens to be the champion of the most important Karate tournament. You can imagine what he has to do to solve the problems of his new friends.

Here we have a protagonist who already has knowledge of Kung Fu, he is fast but he lacks to complement his strategy because the first encounters with Connor (Aramis Knight) were fatal. After the uncle (Jackie Chan) decides that Li must enter the tournament to heal past wounds and also help Victor (boxer and pizza maker) and his daughter Mia (Sadie Stanley) monetarily, he looks for a Karate sensei to complement his attack and defense, so he visits Daniel LaRusso and invites him to New York.

La historia trata sobre Li (Ben Wang), un chico que es sobrino del Sr Han, que ahora tiene una escuela de Kung fu en Pekín, donde enseña con las técnicas que le enseñó a Dre. Li debe mudarse con su mamá para Estados Unidos, donde la mamá espera que deje las artes marciales al lado y tenga un nuevo comienzo, pero los problemas lo persiguen y termina enseñando rapidez a un boxeador que tiene problemas de dinero y teniendo conflictos con el novio de la hija del boxeador que casualmente es campeón del torneo más importante de Karate. Ya se imaginan lo que debe hacer para solucionar los problemas de sus nuevos amigos.

Aquí tenemos un protagonista que ya tiene conocimiento de Kung fu, es rápido pero le falta complementar su estrategia pues los primeros encuentros con Connor (Aramis Knight) estuvieron fatales. Luego de que Shifu (Jackie Chan) decide que Li debe entrar al torneo para sanar heridas del pasado y además ayudar monetariamente a Víctor (boxeador y pizzero) y su hija Mía (Sadie Stanley), le busca un sensei de Karate que complemente su ataque y defensa, por eso visita a Daniel LaRusso y lo invita a Nueva York.

I already said that I love Jackie Chan and seeing Li in the first fights jumping and hanging from pipes reminded me a lot of Jackie’s old movies, the scenes of the fights inside the tournament were few but very good. I also liked the antagonist a lot, I haven’t seen Aramis Knight in many movies, I think the only one was in Ender’s Game, but here he captivated me with his attitude and he’s not a kid anymore 😁.

I didn’t really like the interaction between Han and Daniel, it seemed forced and with some dialogues that I didn’t pay attention to as it seemed to me that they were just there to play with nostalgia. Besides helping Li to complete the strategy for the last attack I didn’t think Daniel’s contribution was significant, maybe it was but I didn’t see it and well, if that last attack wouldn’t have won, then it was very important 😃.

Ajá, lo bueno y que me encantó, fueron las coreografía, ya dije que me encanta Jackie Chan y ver a Li en las primeras peleas saltando y colgado de tubos me recordó mucho a las viejas películas de Jackie, las escenas de los combates dentro del torneo fueron pocas pero muy buenas. El antagonista también me gustó mucho, no son muchas las películas en las que he visto a Aramis Knight, creo que la única ha sido en Ender’s Game, pero aquí me cautivo con su actitud y ya no es un niño 😁

No me gustó mucho la interacción entre Han y Daniel, me pareció forzada y con algunos diálogos a los que no les presté atención pues me pareció que solo estaban ahí para jugar con la nostalgia. Además de haber ayudado a Li a completar la estrategia para el último ataque no me pareció que el aporte de Daniel haya sido significativo, tal vez si pero yo no lo vi y bueno, si ese último ataque pues no hubiera ganado, entonces si fue muy importante 😃.

In conclusion it is a movie that gives you what you want to see, because if you decide to see it is because you are a fan or at least you liked the previous ones, you know the characters and it gives you pleasure to see them together. It doesn’t have a different plot than the previous ones, in this one at the beginning when Li plays the trainer I thought maybe it was going somewhere else but it didn’t, she picked up the thread of her predecessors again. I apologize if I don’t mention this movie’s relationship to the Cobra Kai series but I happen not to have seen any of the 5 seasons so I don’t have a comment on that.

En conclusión es una película que te da lo que quieras ver, pues si decides verla es porque eres fan o al menos te gustaron las anteriores, conoces los personajes y te da gusto verlos juntos. No tiene una trama diferente a la que ofrecen las anteriores, en esta al principio cuando Li hace de entrenador pensé que tal vez iba hacia otro lado pero no así, ella volvió a agarrar el hilo de sus antecesoras. Me disculpo si no menciono la relación de esta película con la serie Cobra Kai pero resulta que no he visto ninguna de las 5 temporadas, por lo que no tengo un comentario al respecto.
