Slingshot Movie Review [ENG-ESP]

Science fiction movies set in space have always seemed fascinating to me because I am interested in knowing how astronauts live and their emotional and mental assimilation for being long periods of time away from earth, and literally locked up with a small crew. There are very good movies that make your brain explode as is the case of Interstellar, well it happened to me and I wanted to see it again because I know I will understand a little more all the twists and complications it has, but there are also other less complex and that I like a lot like The Martian which is a movie that makes you excited and fills you with optimism, others are based more on the mental health of the astronauts where nothing is what it seems, as is the case of Slingshot or in Spanish Destination: Titan.

Las películas de ciencia ficción en el espacio siempre me han parecido fascinantes porque me interesa conocer como viven los astronauta y su asimilación emocional y mental por estar largos periodos de tiempo lejos de la tierra, y literalmente encerrados con una pequeña tripulación. Existen película muy buenas que te hacen explotar el cerebro como es el caso de Interstellar, bueno a mí me pasó y he querido verla nuevamente porque sé que entenderé un poco más todos los giros y complicaciones que tiene, pero también hay otras menos complejas y que me gustan mucho como The Martian que es una película que te hace emocionar y te llena de optimismo, otras por su parte se basan más en la salud mental de los astronauta donde nada es lo que parece, como es el caso de Slingshot o en español Destino: Titán.

John (Casey Affleck) is a super qualified astronaut who competes to be selected for a mission to help the earth with energy problems, this mission will have him for years in space via Titan, a moon of Saturn in the most remote of the solar system and to save resources will have to be every so often asleep, where a certain amount of drugs will be administered and will sleep for months in a hibernation chamber. On the mission he does not embark alone but meets two companions, Captain Franks (Laurence Fishburne) and Nash (Tomer Capone).

After several months where they focus on sleeping, waking up, checking the ship, answering e-mails from Earth giving signs of life and that the mission is continuing normally, the crew begins to feel the side effects of the hibernation medication and begin to see things that are not there and invent conspiracy theories, The crew begins to see things that are not there and invent conspiracy theories, such as that the mission is a failure and they must return to Earth, turning the ship into a battlefield where each side looks for a second ally to support their theory and determine if they consider the mission completed and return to Earth or continue with the plans to Titan.

John (Casey Affleck) en un astronauta súper calificado que concursa para ser seleccionado a una misión que ayudara a la tierra con los problemas energéticos, está misión lo tendrá durante años en el espacio vía hacia Titán, una luna de Saturno en lo más remoto del sistema solar y para ahorrar recursos tendrá que estar cada cierto tiempo dormido, dónde se administrará cierta cantidad de medicamentos y dormirá por meses en una cámara de hibernación. En la misión no se embarca solo sino se encuentra con dos compañeros, el capitán Franks (Laurence Fishburne) y Nash (Tomer Capone).

Luego de varios meses donde se enfocan en dormir, despertar, revisar la nave, responder correos de la tierra dando señales de vida y de que la misión sigue su curso con normalidad, la tripulación empieza a sentir los efectos secundarios de la medicación para la hibernación y comienzan a ver cosas que no están e inventar teorías conspirativas, como que la misión es un fracaso y deben regresar a la tierra, convirtiendo la nave en un campo de batalla donde cada parte busca un segundo aliado que apoye su teoría y determinar si dan por culminada la misión y regresan a la tierra o siguen con los planes hasta Titán.

It is a film that makes you take sides, you go from one side to the other as the events unfold because in the end you do not know what is true and what is false or who is the good guy or who is the bad guy. John who is the third and who must decide which theory to support suffers severely from the effects of hibernation and being in space for so many years away from the woman he loves and met during the tests to be chosen for the mission, so he spends much of the time remembering the moments lived with Zoe (Emily Beecham).

Mental health is very important for an astronaut who goes through all these tests and endure the conditions undergone in space and for that reason they go through a selection process in which they are evaluated not only intellectual abilities which is understood because if they are there is because they have fulfilled and have filled their resume with great titles, but also the ability they have to withstand long periods of time alone without falling into depression or psychosis. John considered himself perfect for this mission because he was a person who appreciated his solitude without emotional attachments on earth, what he did not know was that he was not lonely as he thought, but that he was alone and everything changed when he met Zoe.

Es una película que te hace tomar partido por cada bando, pasas de un lado al otro mientras van transcurriendo los hechos porque al fin no sabes que es cierto y que es falso o quien es él bueno o quien es el malo. John quien es el tercero y quién debe decidir que teoría apoyar sufre gravemente los efectos de la hibernación y de estar en el espacio por tantos años lejos de la mujer a la que ama y que conoció durante las pruebas para ser elegido para la misión, por lo que pasa gran parte del tiempo recordando los momentos vividos con Zoe (Emily Beecham).

Es muy importante la salud mental para un astronauta que pasa por todo este tipo de pruebas y soportar las condiciones por las que se somete en el espacio y por esa razón pasan por un proceso de selección en el que se evalúan no solo las capacidades intelectuales el cual se sobreentiende por qué si están allá es porque han cumplido y han llenado su currículum con grandes títulos, sino también la capacidad que tienen para soportar grandes periodos de tiempo solo sin caer en depresión o psicosis. John se consideraba perfecto para esta misión pues era una persona que apreciaba su soledad sin apegos emocionales en la tierra, lo que no sabía es que no era solitario como él creía, sino que estaba solo y todo cambió cuando conoció a Zoe.

A film that focuses on the mental health of astronauts, how strong or weak they can be in extreme conditions and the consequences of the acts they commit when they are not completely sane. With an ending that you expect to discover because of the whole premise and you don’t know if it will be romantic and everyone will be happy or otherwise disastrous, in particular I was not disappointed because it is consistent with what has been presented. So if you haven't seen it and you like this kind of thiller I recommend it, I liked it.

Una película que se enfoca en la salud mental de los astronauta, lo fuerte o lo débil que se puede llegar a estar en condiciones extremas y las consecuencias de los actos que se comenten cuando no se está totalmente cuerdo. Con un final que esperas descubrir por toda la premisa y que no sabes si pueda llegar a ser romántico y todos felices o en caso contrario desastroso, en particular no me decepcionó pues es coherente con lo que se venía presentando. Así que si no la has visto y te gustan este tipo de thiller te la recomiendo, a mí me gustó.
