"The Professor", originally titled as "Richard Says Goodbye", is a 2018 film starring Johnny Depp, which feels like a mix of a more cynical version of 'The Dead Poets Society' with any of the films that tackle the subject of cancer, and confront the protagonist with his mortality.

Despite this, the film is good, as it uses the genre of dramatic comedy to present the story, and does not fall into excesses, neither of emotional blackmail showing us the suffering of the protagonist, nor of the search for the meaning of life, showing us how suddenly the protagonist wants to live it with an intensity that borders on the unreal.

A pesar de ello la película es buena, ya que usa el género de la comedia dramática para presentarnos la historia, y no cae en los excesos, ni del chantaje emocional mostrándonos el sufrimiento del protagonista, ni de la búsqueda del sentido la vida, mostrándonos como de repente el protagonista quiere vivirla con una intensidad que raya lo irreal.

If anything characterizes this film it is restraint, and that may also be its great flaw in the eyes of many, because it does not delve into either drama or comedy, and the most constant in it is to some extent the absurdity and cynicism, which at times feels quite real.

Si algo caracteriza a esta película es la mesura, y puede que ese sea también su gran defecto a los ojos de muchos, porque no profundiza ni el drama ni la comedia, y lo más constante en ella es hasta cierto punto el absurdo y el cinismo, que por momentos se siente bastante real.

The film revolves around a university professor, personified by Depp, who is diagnosed with cancer, and is given a year and a half to live if he undergoes treatment, and six months if he chooses not to, and how he opts for the second option, and what he does from that point on.

La película gira en torno a un profesor universitario, personificado por Depp, a quien le diagnostican cáncer, y le dan año y medio de vida, si se somete a tratamiento, y seis meses, si decide no hacerlo, y como opta por lo segundo, y lo que hace a partir de ese momento.

The film does not take the direction one would expect, and surprises us with a character who, after the initial shock, decides not to tell anyone about his suffering. The film presents us with someone who decides to give value to what has value, and live what is worth living, but in a simple and everyday way, and therefore more realistic, although that may seem less entertaining.

La película no se va por el lado que uno esperaría, y nos sorprende con un personaje que pasado el shock inicial, decide no dar cuentas a nadie de su padecimiento, no compartirlo con nadie. Nos presenta a alguien que decide darle valor a lo que tiene valor, y vivir lo que vale la pena vivir, pero de una manera sencilla y cotidiana, y por ende más realista, aunque eso pueda parecer menos entretenido.

There are no dramas, regrets, and everything you would expect from a film about someone whose days are numbered, or at least not in the way cinema is used to, and that's what's interesting.

Aquí no hay dramas, lamentaciones, y todo lo que uno esperaría de una película sobre alguien que tiene sus días contados, o al menos no los hay de la manera en que el cine nos tiene acostumbrados, y eso es lo interesante.

The film is entertaining, and relies heavily on Depp, and some interesting supporting characters, but it feels like it has been stripped in the editing room, both its most dramatic and funniest scenes. It lacks intensity, although this also gives it a very particular realism and tone.

La película es entretenida, y se apoya mucho en Depp, y algunos personajes secundarios interesantes, pero se siente como si se le hubieran quitado en el cuarto de edición, tanto sus escenas más dramáticas como las más divertidas. The story is presented in chapters, marking the different stages through which the protagonist goes through in his relationship with his imminent death, and what this implies for him and his closest people. It shows us a protagonist, who regardless of the circumstances, always tries to have the last word, and decides to live, and die, on his own terms.

La historia se nos presenta por capítulos, marcando las diferentes etapas por las que pasa el protagonista en su relación con su muerte inminente, y lo que esta implica para el y sus personas más allegadas. Nos muestra a un protagonista, que sin importar las circunstancias, procura tener siempre la última palabra, y decide vivir, y morir, en sus propios términos.

If you're a Johnny Depp fan, you like movies that go off the beaten path, or you're just an open-minded movie lover, you'll like the movie. But if you like genre films that stick to the rules, and take you on an emotional journey, you might not enjoy it as much and find it weird, but being a movie with Johnny Depp, that's almost normal.

Si eres fan de Johnny Depp, te gusta el cine que se sale de lo convencional, o eres simplemente un amante del cine con mentalidad abierta, la película te va a gustar. Pero si te gusta el cine de género, que se apega a las reglas, y que te lleva a un viaje emocional, tal vez no la disfrutes tanto y te parezca rara, pero siendo una película con Johnny Depp, eso es algo casi normal.

It is appreciated that it is not unnecessarily long, lasting just over 90 minutes, and leaves the viewer, almost like a book, to fill in the blanks, allowing us to read between the lines and create our own interpretation, both of the story and of the protagonists.

Se agradece que no se alargue innecesariamente, ya que dura poco más de 90 minutos, y le deje al espectador, casi como se tratara de un libro, llenar los espacios en blanco, permitiéndonos leer entre líneas y crear así su propia interpretación, tanto de la historia, como de los protagonistas.

This is a movie to spend a pleasant time, that does not disappoint, but does not mark your life, but it must be recognized that it has a different tone within the genre it addresses, and has a manufacture with its own particular stamp. If I had to rate it I would give it 3 out of 5 stars. Recommended, but not for everyone.

Es una película para pasar un rato agradable, que no defrauda, pero tampoco marca tu vida, pero a la que hay que reconocerle que tiene un tono diferente dentro del género que aborda, y tiene un manufactura con un sello propio y particular. Si tuviera que calificarla le daría 3 de 5 estrellas. Recomendable, pero no para todos.
