Looking for a series on Prime Video I came across a tab where it announces those contents that will soon no longer be available on the platform, and the second title on the list was 'Licorice Pizza', a movie set in the 70's that I remember hearing received good reviews from critics, so I decided to watch it.

Buscando una serie en Prime Video me topé con una pestaña en la que anuncia aquellos contenidos que próximamente ya no estarán disponibles en la plataforma, y el segundo título de la lista era 'Licorice Pizza', una película ambientada en los 70's que recuerdo haber escuchado que recibió buenos comentarios de la crítica, así que decidí verla.

I watched it with the expectations of someone who sees a movie with good critical reviews, and while the movie is not bad, at the end my impression of it was not what I expected. The movie is a love story between the main characters who are about 10 years apart, she is about 25 years old and he is about 15, at least at the beginning of the story.

La vi con las expectativas de quien ve una película con buenos comentarios de la crítica, y si bien la película no es mala, al terminar mi impresión sobre ella no fue la que esperaba. La película es una historia de amor entre los protagonistas que se llevan como 10 años de diferencia, ella tiene unos 25 años y el unos 15, al menos al principio de la historia.

This in itself is interesting, but the reality is that this difference, although it is established from the beginning, and we are reminded several times during the film, is not perceived neither physically nor psychologically, as we see the protagonists interact. She looks younger, and much of her behavior, although it corresponds to her age for the time, such as the pressure to formalize a serious relationship and give direction to her life, the film does not delve into these dramas, and to some extent minimizes them.

Esto ya de por si es interesante, pero la realidad es que esta diferencia, si bien se establece desde el principio, y se nos recuerda varias veces durante la película, no se percibe tanto ni en lo físico ni lo sicológico, al ver interactuar a los protagonistas. Ella se ve menor, y mucho de su comportamiento, si bien corresponde con el propio de su edad para la época, como lo son la presión por formalizar una relación seria y darle rumbo a su vida, la película no profundiza en estos dramas, y hasta cierto punto los minimiza.

On the other hand, he is presented as someone who at his young age is already an entrepreneur, or tries to be one, and starts business after business, as if that were going to the movies, and while he tries to get the girl, he recognizes the problem of the age difference, but at times he looks equally or even more mature than she is.

Por el otro lado, el se nos presenta como alguien que a su temprana edad ya es un empresario, o intenta serlo, e inicia negocio tras negocio, como si eso fuera ir al cine, y si bien trata de conseguir a la chica, reconoce el problema de la diferencia de edades, pero en ocasiones se ve igual o incluso más maduro que ella.

The setting is excellent, and portrays the era very well, but my problem with the film is that to a certain extent it minimizes what it should, and could have given the film greater depth: the age difference. It infantilizes the female protagonist a lot, and presents the male protagonist as more mature than he should be, thus shortening the distance between them, to such an extent that it is only evident when it is mentioned several times during the film.

La ambientación es excelente, y retrata muy bien la época, pero mi problema con la película es que hasta cierto punto minimiza lo que debería, y pudo darle a la cinta una mayor profundidad: la diferencia de edades. Nos infantiliza mucho a la protagonista, y nos presente más maduro de lo que debería ser, al protagonista, acortando así la distancia entre ellos, a tal punto que solo es evidente cuando se menciona varias veces durante la cinta.

No one of the co-stars is surprised by the closeness of the protagonists, despite the age difference. And even though it is evident that their friendship has an undertone that is obvious to the naked eye, no one is surprised, no one is shocked, and let's take into account that we are talking about the 70's. Neither the parents, nor the friends, nor anyone in the film is shocked by their close friendship, it is almost as if they were blind to the obvious or did not want to see it.

Nadie de los coprotagonistas se extraña de la cercanía de los protagonistas, a pesar de la diferencia de edad. Y a pesar de que es evidente que su amistad tiene un trasfondo que es obvio a simple vista, nadie se sorprende, nadie se escandaliza, y eso que esta situada en los 70's. Ni los padres, ni los amigos, ni nadie en la película se escandaliza por su amistad tan cercana, es casi como si fueran ciegos a lo evidente o no quisieran verlo.

The film surprised me by integrating some historical facts into the story, such as the oil crisis of the 70's, to mention just one, and incorporating some artists such as Sean Penn and Bradley Cooper, who although they get their paychecks and give performances that border on the memorable, they play roles that feel a bit forced, in the sense that they don't contribute anything to the story.

La película me sorprendió por integrar a la historia algunos hechos históricos, como la crisis petrolera de los 70's, por mencionar uno, e incorporar a algunos artistas como Sean Penn y Bradley Cooper, que si bien desquitan el sueldo y dan actuaciones que rayan lo memorable, interpretan papeles que se sienten un tanto forzados, en el sentido de que no aportan nada a la historia.

The film is entertaining, the performances are good, and in general its production values are impeccable, but I feel that it falls short, it stays too much on the surface, and presents us with a love story like so many others, when, without losing the light and even comedic tone it presents us with, it could have been deeper and more realistic.

La película entretiene, las actuaciones son buenas, y en general sus valores de producción son intachables, pero siento que se queda corta, se queda mucho en la superficie, y nos presenta una historia de amor como tantas, cuando, sin perder el tono ligero y hasta de comedia que nos presenta, pudo ser más profunda y más realista.
