Nice comedy. It had more surprises and imagination than I expected. I saw only trailers in the eighties, and I didn't care about teen movies back then, when I was in my early teen years, but I watched this movie five or six years ago online, and I was pleasantly surprised. Some nice surreal moments made it very watchable for me.

The surrealism, of course. Thank you for mentioning that. I didn't in my post and that surely is an important element. Also might be one of the reasons the movie didn't go over big with teen audiences at the time.

This writer followed up with another movie a few years later, One Crazy Summer, which had some of the elements present here (cartoon characters, for example) but which followed the predictable teen formula mostly. Also starred Cusak and I find it almost unwatchable today--although I did watch it in the past.

I can watch scenes from Better Off Dead many times (the geometry class, for example) and still get a chuckle out of it.
