The Nigerian movie industry has witnessed a lot of paradigm shifts in the movies it portrays out to the world. Gone are the days of movies based on fake love, synonymous with Indian love stories, some movies back then were even the replica of blockbuster Bollywood movies word for word.

But the new entrant of movie producer in Nigeria has stepped up these games, involving unique storylines, amazing movie props, and features, complicated movie quality. All make some Nigerian movies stand out, to even be nominated for prestigious movie awards around the globe.

One was outstanding, in fact, still one of the most outstanding Nigerian films, suspense, and thriller field, set at a time when such could be possible. A story of a prince on a blood-thirsty journey of killing women to avenge the number of years he was molested.

The movie was set in the pre-independence era, 1960 before Nigerian independence. The film opened with Inspector Dan Waziri who was posted from the northern part of Nigeria to the southwest to investigate what looks like a serial killing in a village. On getting there, he confirmed it to be a serial killing with the same mark on all of them who are women. Inspector starts to question all who might be involved but met a dead end.

Blood wasn’t enough for a killer on a rampage, subtle enough not to be seen, set on a vengeance to avenge an evil no one knows of, a virgin killing at all cost, maiming its victim along the way serially. The hunt to stop all these before Nigeria had her independence is on inspector Waziri.

At the same time, the crown prince of the village where these murders were going on just came in from oversea, sent on a scholarship, Inspector Waziri suspect the prince on some occasions but no evidence to do such. As killings went up in number, more innocent were arrested, casing a little ethnic war in their midst.

In one of the raids by Inspector Waziri, he met the killer in a drunk state at a party held to celebrate Nigeria's independence. At the party, he was molested by the killer, and took days for him to recover. In his recovery state, he jumps into clear identification of the perpetrator and went after him with a fellow corporal posted with him to the Akote village.

At the same time, the killer was on his last serial killing, a bid to commemorate the years of abuse he suffered at the hand of a catholic priest back in his boarding school secondary days. He was caught, the shot was fired and his captives were set free.

The molestation and killing in the movie were horrible to look upon, most importantly the part that concerns women, deadly to look upon as young virgins were molested sexually and killed sent a dark taste of the village lifestyle.

Whenever I remember the plot of October 1st, it always sent chills down my spine on the possibility of evil lurking in the dark since all the evil done by the killer was all done in the dark.

The crown prince was the killer, he was the one abused by a catholic priest in his teenage years, bottled up the hurt for years, went on scholarship, and came back as a terror to both his community and the people he is supposed to rule over.

October 1st went on to be nominated for many categories and won some, released in 2014. October 1st was nominated for Best Screenplay, Best Feature, and Best Actor in the Africa International Film Festival in 2014 and won all the categories. A Multichoice Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Award for Best Movie of the year, Best Director of the year, best Actress in a drama, Best sound editor all in 2015.
