What I've been watching: The continuing adventures

A couple of mid-winter snow storms has given @mrsbozz and I a little more time to snuggle up indoors and watch some TV. We are getting to the point where we are caught up on all of our regular stuff and we have started to branch out in to the "oh that looks like it might be good" shows that we saw advertised over the years.

I know I have been doing a lot of these posts lately. You are probably thinking "all they do is watch tv". I know if feels that way, but nothing could be further from the truth. We actually go to bed pretty early most nights since our first alarm goes off at 4am each morning. We can maybe cram one episode into each weeknight if we are lucky, then we go hard on the weekends.

Only Murders in the Building

I know I covered this one already, but I felt it was necessary to circle back to "Only Murders in the Building". The fact is, last time I talked about it I had only seen one episode. My wife and I have now finished both seasons that are available on Hulu and it has been a joy to watch.

I've always enjoyed Selena Gomez in the few things I have seen her in, but she really shines in this show I feel. Martin Short and Steve Martin are absolutely golden as I mentioned before. Someone said in one of the earlier comments that they felt the show started a bit slow. I would have to agree with that. After a couple of episodes though, it is full steam ahead and you are fully invested.

I think was stands out to me the most about this show is the guest stars that they were able to pull in. It feels like every episode you are saying to yourself, no way (fill in the blank) is in this.

Give it a watch, you will see what I mean. I highly recommend this one. I can't wait for the next season to come out!

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal

My wife is a bit of a true crime fiend. Since she gets her summers off from work, she usually picks up a hot case to watch on court TV. Then, throughout the year she finds a couple of other ones that she closely follows as well. After she finished the case with the guy in Minnesota that drove through a crowd of people last year, she quickly picked up the Alex Murdaugh case.

"Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal" picks up before the murder of Alex's wife and son. This gives you some of the background into the family and really starts to raise some questions. I've been following along with @mrsbozz on this one and I have to admit, it is pretty intriguing.

The husband is definitely "sus" and the fact that he is on trial right now for the murder of his wife and son is not very surprising. I still question what his motive is, but that will be for the jury to decide I guess. If I were on the jury based on what I saw from the testimony, there is definitely reasonable doubt.

However, after watching this short three episode Netflix special, it definitely brings into question whether or not Alex couldn't have possibly done it. There is definitely some shady stuff happening down in their neck of the woods.

Even if he ends up beating this murder conviction, he is still going to be in court for much of his foreseeable future. I think there are at least two dozen other charges they are waiting to file against him at this point.

Give it a watch, it's definitely interesting. Defense should be closing their case before too long here and then it will be up to the jury to decide. You can catch all that action on Court TV if you get it as part of your cable or streaming package.

Babylon

When this movie came out, I have every intention of seeing it in the theater. My wife and I actually had plans to go around the holidays, then we got busy and we just ended up never going. When I saw it was available on Paramount Plus the other day, I decide that we needed to carve out some time to watch it.

"Babylon" is a drama that covers the lives of a couple of Hollywood stars in the late 1920's.

The movie goes for the shock factor right away dropping you into the indulgence and lavish audacity of the rich and famous in 1920's silent film. We were only about 15 minutes into the film when I was afraid @mrsbozz was going to tell me to turn it off. We continued as she stated "I'm not quitter", and after the first 20 minutes the film settled down a little.

I say a little loosely, this was still a quite in your face movie. At over three hours long, it isn't a quick watch either. It was interesting to see how the films were supposedly shot back in the day before sound stages and that sort of thing.

They actually cover the advent of "Talkies" in this and how that changed the business dramatically. Probably one of my favorite scenes in the movie is when they are first shooting a picture with music and sound. It's amazing how everything had to be just right for them to get a good take. Post production wasn't anything like it is today.

Another one of my favorite scenes would have to be the snake fight. You'll have to watch it to find out more.

This movie is definitely not for kids. It might not even be for some conservative adults. @mrsbozz is no prude, but I was honestly waiting for her to say "I'm done".

If I had to pick one piece of this movie that was my absolute favorite, it would have to be the music/soundtrack. @mrsbozz agreed that the music in this film was phenomenal. I have already jumped over to Spotify and added the soundtrack as one of my playlists. I plan on digging into it deeper today.

Even if 90% of this movie was over the top and just for shock value, the lifestyle of these people back then was something I don't think I could have kept up with.

I honestly can't say I would recommend this movie. It was nominated for something like three academy awards though, so what do I know...

I think it could have been half the time and it still would have had the same impact and told the same story. The last 15 minutes or so of the movie was a bit bizarre and I wasn't sure if I should shut it off or not. You'll see what I mean if you get around to watching it.

Have you watched Babylon? What did you think of it? Am I just not cool enough to realize how good it was? I'd be curious to hear your thoughts in the comments!

you took the words out of my mouth lol. I am intrigued about the Babylon film but as you don't recommend it, might skip it.

We have been watching the F1 on Netflix, covering the last season. It has been pretty good so far. I guess you have the Indy 500 over there though, I wonder if there is anything about that to watch.

Indy isn't for another couple of months though. Right now it is all about NASCAR over here. My parents are big fans. I haven't watched it since I was a kid. Babylon just wasn't what I expected based on the trailers. It was definitely more audacious than I thought it was going to be.

avatar

I havent seen Babylon but from the trailers and the it does looks like a bit wild, maybe in the levels of The Wolf of Wallstreet with all the drugs and sex

avatar

Yeah, it was kind of similar to that I guess. I'm honestly not sure what I was expecting I guess, but I thought it was going to be more meaningful. It ended up feeling more like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but not as good. I've been reading "professional" reviews on it this morning and it sounds like I wasn't alone.

Man I always say I should catch up on shows and enjoy the awesome ones I missed all in a binge. Then I rarely do.

Being a nerd, I am watching Vox Machina (dungeons and dragons animated series on prime!) and enjoying it. I have to catch up on Mayans and am looking forward to the new Mandalorian season too!

Winter is awesome when you are skilled at hibernation!

Mayans has been really fun to watch. I don't watch too much anime that much anymore. Honestly, I never really got into too much of it. I have the Castlevania show on my Netflix list, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

jaja the mind boggles!

I don't think I have watched any TV as such in the last couple of weeks. I like the 20s though and if you like the music then I might check Babylon out for that!

avatar

I just finished listening to the soundtrack this morning. I didn't really check, but I wouldn't be shocked if that is one of the categories it was nominated for an oscar.

avatar

okay, now I shall be listening to it after dinner!

avatar

Checked the list of track titles 🤣
The first two

I can imagine your comments now!

avatar

Those aren't the right order. The full soundtrack should start with "Welcome" and "Manny and Nellie's Theme".

avatar

Just to tag on, the "my girl's pussy" song is probably one of the best parts of the whole movie. It was done really well.

avatar

I just didn't see it at first, but the way you're telling it is so interesting and the way we see him kill his wife and his child isn't bothered at all, it's going to be interesting to see. I will try to watch this series on netflix this weekend.

He actually testified and was crying on the stand, but he has plenty of time to prepare for the act that he needs to put on. I still don't feel like there is motive, but then again he was addicted to drugs and in money trouble, so who knows.
