Starship Troopers: Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles, fue una serie animada realizada por ordenador emitida entre los años 1999 y 2000, basada en el libro homónimo del escritor Robert A. Heinlein. La producción consta de 34 episodios.

La trama narra como en un futuro lejano, la humanidad libra una guerra contra una raza de insectos gigantes extraterrestres por el dominio del Espacio, siendo la Infantería Móvil la principal fuerza militar humana la que lucha contra los alienígenas y desde cuyo punto de vista, conocemos el desarrollo del conflicto.

A diferencia de las películas y el libro, la serie omite el discurso político, así como la excesiva violencia para contarnos una historia con un tono más ligero, pero sin dejar su escencia militarista. También se añaden algunos personajes nuevos, armamentos y tecnologías más avanzadas así como nuevos tipos de insectos extraterrestres y más planetas que sirven de escenario para contar la historia.

La serie comienza durante una fase avanzada de la guerra, después de la llamada Operación Control de Plagas, batalla que gana la humanidad y obliga a los insectos a retroceder para defender su posición. Cada planeta en donde luchan ambos bandos presentan características diferentes, siendo estas ventajosas o perjudiciales para los ejércitos de los dos razas, lo que evita que la serie tienda a repetirse.

Aunque los primeros episodios pudieran dar la impresión de ser una serie simplista y banal, con resoluciones más heroicas que estratégicas, lo cierto es que todo va cambiando a medida que se va desarrollando los acontecimientos, revelando personajes ricos en complejidad psicológica y emocional, las consecuencias de la guerra en su personalidad y la agobiante dificultad para completar las misiones, que terminan obligando a la Infantería Móvil a tratar a su enemigo de otra manera.

Otro detalle interesante de la serie es que explica la causa de la guerra entre los humanos y los estraterrestes. Si bien los motivos no son originales, la coherencia de la trama le da el sentido existencial necesario para justificar los esfuerzos de la humanidad para luchar.

Una producción entretenida, con una narración coherente, personajes que evolucionan y muestran una gran complejidad psicológica, que apuesta por ampliar el universo de Starship Troopers con novedades interesantes para no agotar la historia.

Starship Troopers: Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles, was a computer animated series broadcast between the years 1999 and 2000, based on the book of the same name by writer Robert A. Heinlein. The production consists of 34 episodes.

The plot tells how in the distant future, humanity wages a war against a race of giant extraterrestrial insects for the mastery of Space, being the Mobile Infantry the main human military force that fights against the aliens and from whose point of view, we know the development of the conflict.

Unlike the movies and the book, the series omits political discourse, as well as excessive violence to tell us a story with a lighter tone, but without leaving its militaristic essence. Some new characters, weapons and more advanced technologies are also added, as well as new types of extraterrestrial insects and more planets that serve as a setting to tell the story.

The series begins during an advanced phase of the war, after the so-called Operation Pest Control, a battle that humanity wins and forces the insects to retreat to defend their position. Each planet where both sides fight has different characteristics, these being advantageous or detrimental to the armies of the two races, which prevents the series from tending to repeat itself.

Although the first episodes might give the impression of being a simplistic and banal series, with more heroic than strategic resolutions, the truth is that everything changes as the events unfold, revealing characters rich in psychological and emotional complexity, the consequences of the war on their personality and the overwhelming difficulty in completing the missions, which end up forcing the Mobile Infantry to treat their enemy differently.

Another interesting detail of the series is that it explains the cause of the war between humans and aliens. While the motives are not original, the coherence of the plot gives it the existential sense necessary to justify humanity's efforts to fight.
