Robin Hood Prince of Thieves [Review] ESP/ENG
Last weekend I spent my time watching movies I found on Netflix, but I came across some classics that were calling to me, hehe 😄 and I couldn't resist, because they're movies from my youth, like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I think this movie is from the '90s, but I remember going to see it in theaters back then for two reasons: one, because the main character was Kevin Costner, and the other, because I really liked the main song by Ryan Adams.
Este fin de semana pasado me dediqué a ver películas que conseguí en netflix pero me encontré con algunos clásicos que me estaban guiñando el ojo, jeje 😄 y no me pude resistir, porque se trata de películas de mi juventud, como Robin Hood, Príncipe de los Ladrones. Esta película es de los años 90 creo yo, pero recuerdo que en esa época yo la fui a ver al cine por dos razones: una porque el protagonista era Kevin Costner, y la otra porque me gustaba mucho la canción principal de Ryan Adams.
It's based on an English legend, that of Robin Hood. Who doesn't know at least the basics about this hero, or anti-hero, as you prefer? He robbed the rich to feed the poor, but the film goes a step further and adds more depth to the story and the characters.
Está basada en una leyenda inglesa, la de Robin Hood, ¿Quién no conoce al menos lo más básico sobre este héroe o antihéroe, como ustedes le quieran llamar? Robaba a los ricos para dar de comer a los pobres, sin embargo la película va un paso más allá y le da un poco más de profundidad a la historia y a los personajes.
Robin was not born an outcast; on the contrary, he was born into nobility. However, circumstances forced him to rebel against the system. In the absence of King Richard (who was away on the Crusades), England was dominated by the fearsome Sheriff of Nottingham. High taxes, corruption, and abuses against the population forced many to live on the margins of society, finding refuge in Sherwood Forest. Later, Robin joined the clan of people dissatisfied with the new impositions and began trying to restore power to their true king, but it certainly would not be an easy task.
Robin no nace como un Paria, al contrario, nace dentro de la nobleza, pero las circunstancias lo obligaron a rebelarse contra el sistema, ya que en ausencia del rey Richard (que estaba en las cruzadas) Inglaterra es dominada por el temible Sheriff de Nottingham, los altos impuestos, corrupción y desmanes contra la población, obligaron a muchos a vivir al margen de la sociedad, encontrando refugio en el bosque de Sherwood, más tarde Robin se une al clan de gente inconforme con las nuevas imposiciones y comienza a tratar de devolver el poder a su verdadero rey, pero desde luego no sería una tarea nada fácil.
The plot is very interesting; it speaks of justice and values like honesty, loyalty, and identity, but it also speaks of acceptance. At the beginning, Robin isn't accepted by the people of Sherwood because they don't see him as their equal. This leaves Robin in a social limbo: he no longer belongs to the nobles, but neither to the poor. So he has to prove that his heart is with justice and that he's not willing to accept the sheriff's abuses. It's a class struggle, yes, but the story also shows us that we're not so different because, in the end, we share the same origin. In fact, Robin discovered he had a brother among the outcasts.
La trama está muy interesante, nos habla de justicia y valores como la honestidad y la lealtad e identidad, pero también habla de aceptación, al inicio Robin no es aceptado por la gente de Sherwood porque no lo ven como su igual, esto deja a Robin en un limbo social: ya no pertenece a los nobles pero tampoco a lo pobres, así que él tiene que demostrar que su corazón está con la justicia y que no está dispuesto a aceptar los desmanes del sheriff. Es una lucha de clases, sí, pero también la historia nos muestra que no somos tan diferentes porque al fin y al cabo tenemos el mismo origen, de hecho, Robin descubrió que tenía un hermano entre los parias.
And although I love Kevin Costner and think he did an excellent job in this film, I believe it's undeniable that Alan Rickman completely shone in his antagonistic role. It's no secret that he was very good at playing villains, but this was clearly a different kind of villain, with other nuances, I'd even say cartoonish. But it was that touch that made him especially charismatic, and the best part is that despite all that charisma and funny scenes, the guy was still terrifying, because he gave his character an impressive touch of mental dissociation.
Y aunque me encanta Kevin Costner y pienso que hizo un excelente trabajo en esta película, yo creo que es innegable que quien se lució completamente fue Alan Rickman con su papel antagónico, porque para nadie es un secreto que él era muy bueno para interpretar villanos, sin embargo este era a todas luces un villano diferente, con otros matices, yo diría que incluso caricaturesco, pero fue ese toque el que lo hizo especialmente carismático, y lo mejor de todo es que a pesar de todo ese carisma y escenas graciosas, el tipo no dejaba de ser aterrador, porque le daba un toque de disociamiento mental impresionante a su personaje.
The locations are gorgeous. I don't know if they actually filmed in the real Sherwood Forest, but I love the landscapes the film shows. I really feel like they transport you to that era and put you in context with the story. The same goes for the soundtrack; the scenes are very well accompanied by it, especially at the climax of the film. But above all, I loved hearing the chords of the main theme right at the moment when Robin kills the Sheriff and rescues Lady Marianne.
Las locaciones son bellísimas, ignoro si de verdad filmaron en el verdadero bosque de Sherwood pero amo los paisajes que muestra la película, realmente siento que te trasladan a esa época y te ponen en contexto con la historia, y lo mismo pasa con el soundtrack, las escenas están muy bien acompañadas por él, en especial en el punto álgido de la película, pero sobre todo me encantó escuchar los acordes del tema principal justo en el momento en el que Robín mata al Sheriff y rescata a Lady Marianne.
Speaking of this character, I think I have a kind of love/hate relationship with her. Even though she was initially portrayed as a strong character who could defend herself very well, in the end she needed Robin's help to get rid of the Sheriff. It's not that the fact itself bothers me too much; it was quite normal at that time for women to be depicted as fragile. But I think they shouldn't have shown her from the beginning as someone capable of facing any opponent. Even so, I also found her to be a charismatic character, and sometimes her dialogue made me laugh, like when she said that for that amount they were offering, she would be willing to hand Robin over herself.
Hablando precisamente de este personaje creo que siento una especie de amor/odio por él, y es que a pesar de que al inicio lo mostraron como un personaje aparentemente fuerte, que se sabe defender muy bien, al final de cuentas necesitó la ayuda de Robin para librase del Sheriff, y no es que me moleste demasiado el hecho en sí, era lo más normal en esa época, que las mujeres se mostraran frágiles, pero pienso que no han debido mostrarla en el inicio como alguien capaz de hacerle frente a cualquier contrincante, aún así también me pareció un personaje carismático y en ocasiones sus diálogos me hicieron reír, como cuando dijo que por esa cantidad que estaban ofreciendo sería capaz de entregar ella misma a Robin.
The pairing of Kevin Costner and the great Morgan Freeman is absolutely wonderful and makes the film more dynamic. In my opinion, it was a great choice for weekend entertainment and a reminder of my younger days. Thanks for reading my post, sending you virtual kisses and hugs!
La dupla que hicieron Kevin Costner y el gran Morgan Freeman es absolutamente maravillosa y hace que la película tenga más dinamismo, en mi opinión fue una gran opción para entretenerme el fin de semana y recordar viejos tiempos de juventud.
