CineTV Contest #135: Erin Brockovich - Una madre por el mundo [ENG/ESP]

Greetings to everyone in the CineTV community! Today I'm joining here to participate in the community's 135th Contest, which this time proposes the theme of "Favorite Movie with a Mother" (or where the story revolves around a mother). So with that in mind, the first thing I thought of was "We Need to Talk About Kevin," but I've talked about it before, and I honestly think that while it's quite good, it has a somewhat negative focus, and I wouldn't want to bring that up here (there are also more entertaining movies). So the next movie that came to mind was "Erin Brockovich" (2000) by director Steven Soderbergh. It is a dramatization based on the true story of Erin Brockovich, an American woman who, upon starting to work in a law firm, discovers a case that will change her life and the lives of others forever. At first glance, the movie doesn't seem to have anything to do with being a mother, but here's the full story. Let's begin.

El día de hoy me uno por aquí para participar en el Concurso #135 de la comunidad, que en esta oportunidad propone el tema de "Película Favorita con una Madre" (o donde la historia gira en torno a una madre). Así que con eso en mente, lo primero en que pensé fue en "Tenemos que hablar de Kevin", pero ya hablé de ella en una ocasión pasada y sinceramente creo que aunque es bastante buena, tiene un enfoque un poco negativo y no quisiera traer eso por aquí (habiendo también películas más amenas). Así que la siguiente película que se vino a mi cabeza fue la de "Erin Brockovich" (del año 2000) del director "Steven Soderbergh", el cual sostiene una dramatización basada en la historia real de Erin Brockovich, una mujer estadounidense que al comenzar a trabajar en la oficina de un abogado, descubre un caso que cambiará su vida y la de otros para siempre. En primera instancia la película no parece tener nada que ver con ser una madre, pero aquí les cuento todo. Comencemos.
Erin is an American woman (approximately 30 years old) going through a divorce and finding herself alone with the responsibility of her three children. In the midst of finalizing her divorce and looking for work to support herself, she is involved in a car accident due to the negligence of another driver. Erin is devastated, so she hires a lawyer to handle her lawsuit, which she ultimately loses. She blames her lawyer for not properly defending her case, but he claims he didn't have enough staff to do his job. She sees an opportunity to get a job and support her children. With great determination and effort, Erin manages to stay with him, and it is there (while she was filing cases) that she discovers the case of Donna Jensen. As she begins to investigate, she discovers that Donna and several other residents in the area have become seriously ill from a compound that poisons the groundwater, and PG&E is responsible. Erin will fight with all her might to bring justice to those affected.
Erin es una mujer estadounidense (de unos 30 años de edad aproximadamente) que atraviesa un divorcio y se halla así misma sola frente a la responsabilidad de sus tres hijos. En plena faena, en medio de la culminación de su divorcio y buscando trabajos para subsistir, sufre un accidente automovilístico a causa de la negligencia de otro conductor. Erin queda afectada, por lo que recurre a un abogado para que lleve su caso de demanda, el cual acaba perdiendo. Ella culpa a su abogado por no defender su caso con propiedad, pero el afirma que no tenía suficiente personal para llevar a cabo su trabajo. Por lo que ella nota una oportunidad para poder hacerse de un puesto de trabajo y sostener a sus hijos. Con mucha determinación y esfuerzo, Erin logra quedarse con él y es allí (cuando archivaba algunos casos), que encuentra el caso de Donna Jensen. Al comenzar a investigar, descubre que tanto Donna cómo varios otros residentes de la zona, han enfermado gravemente a causa de un componente que envenena las aguas subterráneas y los responsables son la compañía PG&E. Erin luchará con todas sus fuerzas para hacer justicia hacia los afectados.
The reason I chose this film is because Erin is a clear example of a mother who would do anything for her children. How can we forget Julia Roberts playing Erin Brockovich, carrying her young children everywhere while working on the case and so on. Of course, the film is mostly a denunciation of an environmental evil, but it's also a showcase of a woman who understands and is moved by human life. She thinks not only of her children but also of the children of each of her clients. Of their futures. She is truly affected. Her struggle is not only a personal matter (of self-improvement, of professional recognition, as a woman and as a mother), but a communal good. In this sense, Erin is a character with the grit, courage, and resilience that only a mother knows. This isn't to say that a childless person isn't capable of the same (acting for the greater good), but I think from my experience with friends who have been mothers, my own mother, and relatives, I've learned about the will that comes with having a child. It's a difficult thing to describe. And I firmly believe Erin's children were a huge motivation behind all of this. Ultimately, that's my thought. La razón por la cual elegí esta película es porque Erin es un claro ejemplo de una madre que haría todo por sus hijos. Cómo olvidar a Julia Roberts encarnando a Erin Brockovich, cargando a sus pequeños hijos a todos lados al mismo tiempo que trabajaba en el caso y demás. Por supuesto, la película es mayoritariamente una denuncia sobre un mal ambiental, pero también es la muestra de una mujer que comprende y se ve conmovida por la vida humana. Ella no solo piensa en sus hijos sino también en los hijos de cada uno de sus clientes. En el futuro de ellos. Realmente se siente afectada. Su lucha no es solo una cuestión personal (de superación, de reconocimiento profesional, cómo mujer y cómo madre), sino un bien comunitario. En este sentido, Erin es un personaje con las agallas, el coraje y la resiliencia que solo una madre conoce. Esto no quiere decir que una persona sin hijos no sea capaz de lo mismo (actuar por un bien mayor), pero creo que por mi experiencia con amigas que han sido madres, mi propia madre y familiares, he sabido de la voluntad que nace cuando se tiene un hijo. Es algo difícil de describir. Y creo firmemente que los hijos de Erin fueron una gran motivación detrás de todo esto. Finalmente, ese es mi pensar.
