Movie Review: Come and See [ENG/ESP]
Hello to everyone in the Movies & TV Shows community! Today I bring a new movie review and this time it is one of the most raw and realistic films that we can find with war themes. I am referring of course to 'Come and see' a film by director Elem Klimov released in 1985. A devastating drama that as it progresses becomes uncomfortable and painful to watch. Here I tell you about it.
The film tells the story of Flyora, a 14-year-old boy from Belarus who lives with his mother and sisters in a small village. Set in 1943, in the middle of the world war and during the invasion of the Nazi troops, Flyora does not seem to realize the seriousness of the matter. In a first scene we see him playing in the sand with another boy, searching for war treasures. Fighter planes are observed above them. His luck will change when he finds a rifle among the debris and decides to join the Soviet resistance.

El día de hoy traigo una nueva reseña de película y esta vez se trata de una de los films más crudos y realistas que podremos encontrar con temáticas bélica. Me refiero por supuesto a 'Come and see' una película del director Elem Klimov estrenada en el año 1985. Un drama devastador que a medida que avanza resulta incómodo y doloroso de ver. Aquí te cuento sobre ello.
La película nos narra la historia de Flyora, un joven de 14 años oriundo de Bielorrusia quién vive con su madre y sus hermanas en una pequeña aldea. Ubicado en el año 1943, plena guerra mundial y durante la invasión de las tropas nazis, Flyora parece no percatarse de la gravedad del asunto. En una primera escena lo vemos jugar en la arena junto a otro niño, en búsqueda de tesoros de guerra. Los aviones de combate se observan sobre ellos. Su suerte cambiará cuando encuentra un rifle entre los escombros y decide unirse a la resistencia soviética.
Even in these first minutes of shooting, we observe that although his mother is terrified by her only son's decision, Flyora still seems to retain her calm and enthusiasm to go to the battlefield. She knows very well that what awaits them is nothing but sorrow and asks Flyora to end her and her sisters' lives. He does not do so and instead jokes with her sisters. Soon the partisans arrive and take Flyora away. From now on things go downhill.
It is quite hard to watch as Flyora begins to suffer the consequences of her decision. The troops decide to move on and leave Flyora in charge of the shelter. There she meets Glasha, a teenage girl who will keep her company from now on and help us understand the context of the situation. When a fighter plane launches missiles and drops some soldiers by parachute, Flyora temporarily loses his hearing and seems confused. Flyora decides to return home together with Glasha. She has realized that her family and friends are no longer alive but Flyora seems oblivious and insists on denying all the evil that has been unleashed.
Aún en estos primeros minutos de rodaje, observamos que aunque su madre se encuentra aterrorizada por la decisión de su único hijo, Flyora todavía parece conservar la calma y el entusiasmo por ir al campo de batalla. Ella sabe muy bien que lo que les depara no es más que penas y le pide a Flyora que acabe con la vida de ella y sus hermanas. Él no lo hace y en cambio bromea con sus hermanas. Pronto llegan los partisanos y se llevan a Flyora. De ahora en más las cosas irán en picada.
Resulta bastante duro de ver cómo Flyora empieza a sufrir las consecuencias de su decisión. La tropa decide avanzar y dejan a Flyora a cargo del refugio. Allí conoce a Glasha, una adolescente que le hará compañía de ahora en más y nos ayudará a entender el contexto de la situación. Cuando un avión de combate lanza misiles y deja caer algunos soldados en paracaídas, Flyora pierde temporalmente la audición y parece confundido. Flyora decide volver a casa junto con Glasha. Ella se a dado cuenta que su familia y amigos ya no están vivos pero Flyora parece ajeno e insiste en negar todo el mal que se ha desatado.
The following scenes, mixed between reality and the inexplicable, lead us to understand that the rhythm of the narrative has changed. The characters live in a state of inertia. At certain points they are paralyzed and move forward confusedly, as if trying to make sense of all the chaos. But we all know that there is no way to explain how it is possible that so much madness has been unleashed. We remember a happy Flyora getting a cow to feed the survivors and then his grief at receiving an onslaught of flares and gunfire that wipes her out. His face is able to speak for him.
No spoliers here as we all know how this story ends. However, that doesn't make what we see on screen any more tolerable or easier to consume. It sounds like a tale from the Marquis de Sade but reality trumps fiction. There are no sermons on right or wrong here, as there are universal issues that we would all agree are unforgivable and unacceptable.
Las escenas siguientes, entre mezcladas entre la realidad y lo inexplicable, nos llevan a entender que el ritmo de la narracion a cambiado. Los personajes viven en un estado de inercia. En ciertos puntos se paraliza y avanza confusamente, cómo tratando de encontrar sentido a todo el caos. Pero todos sabemos que no hay forma de explicar cómo es posible que tanta locura se haya desatado. Recordamos a un Flyora feliz al conseguir una vaca para alimentar a los sobrevivientes y luego su pena al recibir un ataque de bengalas y disparos que acaban con ella. Su rostro es capaz de hablar por él.
Aquí no hay spoliers pues todos sabemos cómo acaba esta historia. Sin embargo eso no quiere decir que resulte más tolerable o más fácil de consumir lo que vemos en pantalla. Parece un cuento del Marqués de Sade pero la realidad supera la ficción. Aquí no hay sermones sobre el bien o el mal, pues hay cuestiones universales en las que todos estaríamos de acuerdo en decir que son imperdonables e inadmisibles.
What is also remarkable about this film is the use of close-ups that focus on the characters during their dialogues. They seem to be having the conversation with us, the viewers. Staring at the camera. The cinematography is also exquisite. And that is a brilliantly used resource. In addition, the music (musical pieces by Mozart and folk music) is an ideal accompaniment because at the beginning it sounds clean and then, as the film progresses, the sound becomes distorted and dirty.
Undoubtedly, it is a film worth watching as it is a social denunciation of the crimes committed against humanity. 626 villages in Belarus were massacred during that dark period. Flyora represents all the children who were stained and outraged. It is also something to judge our role as spectators. Are we the ones who watch and observe so quietly without doing anything? Lo destacable también de esta película es el uso de primeros planos que enfocan a los personajes durante sus diálogos. Pareciera que sostuvieran la conversación con nosotros, los espectadores. Viendo fijamente a la cámara. La fotografía también es exquisita. Y eso es un recurso brillantemente utilizado. Además, la música (piezas musicales de Mozart y música folklórica) es un acompañamiento ideal pues al principio suena limpio y luego, conforme avanza el film, el sonido se distorsiona y ensucia.
Sin duda es una película que vale la pena ver pues es una denuncia social hacia los crímenes cometidos hacia la humanidad. 626 aldeas de Bielorrusia fueron masacradas durante ese oscuro periodo. Flyora representa a todos los niños que fueron manchados y ultrajados. También es algo para juzgar nuestro papel como espectadores ¿Somos nosotros los que vemos y observamos tan tranquilamente sin hacer nada? Finalmente es algo que les dejo a cada uno luego de haber leído este artículo. No me puedo ir sin antes agradecer a todos los que pasan por aquí. Uno de mis géneros favoritos porque me ayuda a conocer mucho mas a fondo toda la historia de nuestros antepasados alrededor de uno de los hechos mas terribles e imperdonables que pudo vivir la humanidad, aunque nunca he visto esta película, entiendo al dolor que expresas, es imposible no ver los hechos ocurridos y pensar en hacer algo, esta es esa parte dura del cine que te muestra de forma grafica lo dura que es la realidad y que hasta se queda corta con la ficción.
