Movie Review: Days of Wines and Roses. Behind the Laughter [ENG/ESP]

Hello everyone! Today I bring you a new analysis about one of the most true to life movies about stormy relationships and addiction problems, like no other movie and it is 'Days of Wine and Roses'. A gem of cinema that I'm sure you're going to love. So let's go with it!
The movie was directed by Blake Edwards and released in 1962. This director was in charge of putting together an excellent cast, with the participation of actors like Jack Leemon and Lee Rewick, in the roles of Joe Clay and Kirsten Arnesen, respectively. The film won the Oscar for Best Song from composers Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer with the song 'Days of Wine and Roses'. And we may see on more than one occasion in a series or movie (such as the Simpsons) a nod to this drama.

El día de hoy traigo un nuevo análisis sobre una de las películas más fieles a la realidad en cuanto a relaciones tormentosas y los problemas de adicción, como ninguna otra película y se trata de 'Días de vinos y rosas'. Una joya del cine que estoy segura te va a encantar. Así que ¡Vamos con ello!
La pelicula fue dirigida por Blake Edwards y estrenada en 1962. Este director se encargó de reunir a un elenco excelente, con la participación de actores como Jack Leemon y Lee Rewick, en los papeles de Joe Clay y Kirsten Arnesen, respectivamente. La película ganó el premio al Oscar a la mejor canción por parte de los compositores Henry Mancini y Johnny Mercer con la canción 'Days of Wine and Roses'. Y podremos ver en más de una ocasión en alguna serie o película (como los Simpsons) un guiño sobre este drama.
The movie is about the life of Joe Clay, a public relations man with a lot of charisma, energy and eloquent enough to attract clients and close deals immediately. But he has a big problem: he is an alcoholic. At one of the public events Joe organizes, he meets Kirsten Arnesen, a noble, intelligent and beautiful woman who works as an assistant to one of Joe's clients. Joe is charmed by Kirsten, but the relationship doesn't start off too well when a misunderstanding arises. Joe tries to make amends by apologizing and offering her an invitation to dinner. Moment where the first appearance of the great protagonist of this film is present; alcohol. The relationship is soon based on that of a couple of alcoholics who succumb to this evil.
Unlike other films that deal with drug addiction such as Requiem for a Dream, Transporting, Christiane F. and Leaving Las Vegas, Days of Wine and Roses is very subtle in its treatment of the image, the resources it uses and the plot. It is not grotesque and does not seek the viewer's morbidity. The vision is different, to move and raise awareness of a reality. We can observe a deep joy and satisfaction in the couple's initial relationship until they both fall into a harmful loop thanks to addiction, at the end of their relationship. They go from heaven to hell. But there is still love between them, which we can see in Joe who, in overcoming his addiction, tries again and again to save his wife (who is also driven by guilt and remorse).
La pelicula va acerca de la vida de Joe Clay, un relacionista público con mucho carisma, energía y lo suficientemente elocuente como para atraer clientes y cerrar tratos de inmediato. Pero tiene un gran problema: es alcohólico. En uno de lo eventos públicos que Joe organiza, conoce a Kirsten Arnesen, una noble, inteligente y bella mujer que trabaja como asistente de uno de los clientes de Joe. Joe se ve encantado por Kirsten, pero la relación no comienza demasiado bien al surgir un malentendido. Joe intenta enmendar este error al disculparse y ofrecerle una invitación a cenar. Momento donde se hace presente la primera aparición del gran protagonista de esta película; el alcohol. La relación pronto se basará en la de una pareja de alcohólicos que sucumben a este mal.
A diferencia de otras películas que tratan sobre la adicción a las drogas como Réquiem for a Dream, Transporting, Christiane F. y Leaving las Vegas, Días de vinos y rosas es muy sutil en cuanto al tratamiento de la imagen, los recursos que utiliza y el argumento. No es grotesca y no busca el morbo del espectador. La visión es otra, conmover y concientizar sobre una realidad. Podemos observar una profunda alegría y satisfacción en la relación inicial de la pareja hasta que ambos caen en un bucle dañino gracias a la adicción, al final de su relación. Van del cielo al infierno. Pero no deja de existir el amor entre ellos, lo que podemos ver en Joe quién al superar su adicción intenta una y otra vez salvar a su esposa (quién también se ve movido por la culpa y el remordimiento).
We have such unforgettable scenes as Joe in the greenhouse looking for the last bottle of gin in his father-in-law's flower pots. He reaches the peak of his addiction and that's when he becomes aware of his actions. Or like the scene where Kirsten takes a drink of alcohol for the first time and seems to feel very good about it, not knowing that this would be the beginning of her great torment. A melancholic Joe who doesn't stop feeling guilty for putting Kirsten in that world. And others. All these scenes are shown in such an organic and poetic way that we go from being annoyed with Joe for bringing Kirsten closer to alcohol, to feeling sorry for him for his destroyed marriage and sweet Kirsten lost in the streets.
Among other things, the film aims not only to tell a drama but to make visible a problem: alcohol addiction. One of the most destructive addictions and of which there are many victims. Alcohol is an invisible evil that is not taken seriously enough. Every day thousands of people consume alcohol without thinking much about it, without being aware that they may be addicted to it. Just like Joe's wife. This invisible monster, disguised as normality, is capable of destroying families and relationships.
Tenemos escenas tan inolvidables como la de Joe en el invernadero buscando la última botella de ginebra en las macetas de flores de su suegro. Llega al punto máximo de su adicción y es cuando toma consciencia sobre sus actos. O como la escena dónde Kirsten toma por primera vez un trago de alcohol y parece sentirse muy bien al respecto, sin saber que este sería el comienzo de su gran tormento. Un Joe melancólico que no deja de sentirse culpable por meter a Kirsten en ese mundo. Y otras mas. Todas estas escenas son mostradas de una forma orgánica y poética que pasamos de estar molestos con Joe por acercar a Kirsten al alcohol, a sentir lastima por él por su matrimonio destruido y la dulce Kirsten perdida en las calles.
Entre otras cosas la película tiene como objetivo no solo contar un drama sino hacer visible una problemática: la adicción al alcohol. Una de las adicciones más destructivas y de las cuales existen muchas víctimas. El alcohol es un mal invisible que no es tomado con la suficiente seriedad posible. Diariamente miles de personas consumen alcohol sin pensar mucho en el asunto, sin ser conscientes que posiblemente sean adictos a ello. Tal y como la esposa de Joe. Este monstruo invisible, disfrazado de normalidad, es capaz de destruir familias y relaciones.
It is surprising to see how the strongest and most powerful bond that Joe and Kirsten had arose precisely from that first encounter where they tasted the first bottle. Alcohol was the reason for fun, happiness, reunion and love for them. Moments of sobriety, though few, were often inconsequential, flat and filled with anxiety about the next encounter with a bottle. So-called toxic relationships, the truly damaging relationships, work as in this film; where eventually one of the two parties will decide to end it. Healing is simply individual, no matter how much one loves the other.

Es sorprendente ver cómo el vínculo más fuerte y poderoso que Joe y Kirsten tenían surgía precisamente de ese primer encuentro donde probaron la primera botella. El alcohol era el motivo de diversión, de felicidad, de encuentro y de amor para ellos. Los momentos de sobriedad, aunque eran pocos, solían ser intrascendentes, planos y llenos de ansiedad por el siguiente encuentro con una botella. Las llamadas relaciones tóxicas, las verdaderas relaciones dañinas, funcionan como en esta película; dónde finalmente alguno de las dos partes decidirá poner termino. La sanación simplemente es individual por mucho que se ame al otro.

A hard-hitting classic about the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption and the struggle to get out of an addiction. I saw it many years ago in a film club I attended, did you see it again recently, had you seen it before? I'm going to look for it and enjoy it again.
