Movie Review: Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon [ENG/ESP]

Hello to everyone in the Movies & TV Shows community! Today I bring you a new movie recommendation, this time it is the anime film by Satoshi Kon, based on the novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis (1997). "Perfect Blue" is known as one of the best anime films in its genre, psychological thriller, due to the excellent treatment of the story, characters, animation, music and script. Even serving as a subject of admiration for high caliber directors such as Darren Aronofsky, who was inspired by this film to make "The Black Swan". So join me in this review to learn about this gem.

Set in Japan, the story centers on Mima Kirigoe, an idol belonging to the famous J-Pop group, "CHAM". Mima enjoys an impeccable reputation, as her angelic appearance and behavior (a role she has played for years through Yoko, a character she uses on stage -her performance-) has won the hearts of all her fans who idealize her as an eternal innocent girl. Mima is growing up and with it her goals, so she wants to make her way as an actress in the film industry. She announced during a presentation of the musical group, the end of her career as an Idol. Leaving many of her fans disappointed. When Mima arrives home, she receives a fax that reads "Traitor". She doesn't think much of it.

El día de hoy les traigo una nueva recomendación de película, esta vez se trata de la película animada de Satoshi Kon, basada en la novela de Yoshikazu Takeuchi, Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis (1997). "Perfect Blue" es conocida cómo una de las mejores películas de anime y de su género, thriller psicológico, debido al excelente tratamiento de la historia, los personajes, la animación, su música y su guión. Sirviendo incluso cómo sujeto de admiración por directores de alto calibre cómo Darren Aronofsky, quién se inspiró de este largometraje para realizar "The Black Swan". Así que acompáñame en esta reseña para conocer sobre esta joya.

Ambientada en Japón, la historia se centra en Mima Kirigoe, una idol perteneciente al famoso grupo de J-Pop, "CHAM". Mima goza de una reputación intachable, pues su apariencia y conducta angelical (un papel que ha representado durante años a través de Yoko, un personaje que utiliza en tarima -su performance-) le ha hecho ganarse el corazón de todos sus fans quienes la idealizan cómo una eterna niña inocente. Mima está creciendo y con ello sus metas, por lo que desea abrirse paso cómo actriz en la industria del cine. Anunciando así durante una presentación del grupo musical, el término de su carrera cómo Idol. Dejando a muchos de sus fanáticos decepcionados. Cuando Mima llega a casa, recibe un fax que dicta "Traidora". Ella no le toma mucha importancia.

Mima turns to Tadokoro, a manager who will take her to the top as an actress. Her debut is in the series "Double Bind", which has a much more mature, adult character, quite different from Mima's profile. She even receives comments from her co-stars that she is not up to the task. So does her assistant, Rumi, who urges her to leave the series because it will ruin her reputation even more. However, she dares to go ahead with the project. That seems to be fine until Mima has to star in a scene where she has to act as an exotic dancer who is brutally raped. Mima begins to falter after this event, and along with it comes the discovery of a website dedicated entirely to her called, "Mima's Room".

Mima's fragmentation is given by her environment, her self-concept and the influence of people. She is torn between reality and fantasy. On the one hand she has her alter ego, Yoko, the perfect, successful, confident and loved Idol, who symbolizes everything she was and should have been. Then we have Mima herself, who is fragile, sad and failed in her new reality. Mima begins to dissociate without realizing the eminent danger in which she finds herself because within her delusions, there is some truth and that is that someone wants her out of the way. Mima will have to find her own way out of this mess.

Mima recurre a Tadokoro, un manager que se encargará de llevarla a la cima cómo actriz. Su debut se da en la serie "Double Bind", el cual tiene un carácter mucho más maduro, adulto y bastante diferente al perfil de Mima. Incluso recibe comentarios de sus compañeros que afirman que ella no está a la altura. Así cómo su asistente, Rumi, quién la incita a dejar la serie de lado pues eso arruinara aún más su reputación. Sin embargo, se atreve a seguir adelante con el proyecto. Eso parece estar bien hasta que a Mima le toca protagonizar una escena dónde debe actuar cómo una bailarina exótica qué es brutalmente violada. Mima comienza a flaquear a partir de este suceso y junto a ello se suma el hecho de descubrir una página de internet dedicada enteramente a ella llamada, "El cuarto de Mima".

La fragmentación de Mima es dada por su entorno, su autoconcepto y la influencia de las personas. Ella se ve divida entre la realidad y la fantasía. Por un lado tiene a su alter ego, Yoko, la Idol perfecta, exitosa, segura y amada, que simboliza todo lo que ella era y debió ser. Luego tenemos a la propia Mima, quién se halla frágil, triste y fracasada en su nueva realidad. Mima comienza a disociar sin darse cuenta del eminente peligro en el que se encuentra pues dentro de sus delirios, hay algo de verdad y es que alguien la quiere fuera del camino. Mima deberá buscar por su propia cuenta salir de todo este embrollo.

"Perfect Blue" stands out for exposing the unkind side of the music industry, where Idols like Mima must lead an exemplary life for the good of a product, without measuring too much in the impact that this weight has on the artists. The film can become confusing at times because of Mima's hallucinations and the supporting characters, but that is part of its charm; to make us live Mima's state of mind. However, at the end of the events we are able to fit the pieces together and resolve the situation. It's a great movie, which I would recommend with my eyes closed. "Perfect Blue" destaca por exponer el lado poco amable dentro de la industria musical, dónde las Idols cómo Mima deben llevar una vida ejemplar para el bien de un producto, sin medir demasiado en el impacto que tiene dicho peso en las artistas. Estándares irreales para personas de carne y hueso. Por otra parte la misma película puede ser tomada "poco en serio" por el hecho de ser animada y de paso, pertenecer al estilo de anime, dejando de lado todo el mérito que realmente merece. Además de que en ciertos momentos puede tornarse confusa por las alucinaciones de Mima y los personajes secundarios, sin embargo es parte de su encanto; hacernos vivir el estado mental de Mima. Sin embargo, al final de los eventos podemos encajar las piezas y resolver la situación. Es una gran película, la cual recomiendo con los ojos cerrados.
