Movie Review: The Havana Quartet. An ideal comedy [ENG/ESP]
Hello to everyone in the Movies & TV Shows community! Today I bring you another movie recommendation and this time we will be talking about El Cuarteto de la Habana, a Cuban film by director Fernando Colomo. It dates from 1998 and has a script written by Julio Carrillo and Fernando Colomo. Set in the city of Havana, this comedy classic brings us the story of Walter, a pianist who lives in Spain and decides to travel to Cuba to reunite with the past. Join me on this trip where the entanglements and lies will be part of the order of the day and will surely bring a smile to your face.
Walter sees his life in chaos and failure: he doesn't have the career as a musician that he wanted so much, on the contrary, ironically he works as a janitor in a jazz club in Madrid, his grandmother has just died, he is full of debts and his girlfriend is pregnant. Everything seems to look bad for him but one day he discovers (while rummaging through his house) among the floor tiles where he and his grandmother used to live, an old box with several souvenirs. Inside it he finds a videotape that will be revealing: his mother, Lita, (whom his father and grandmother never wanted to talk about) has left him a greeting with her sister Diana, where she lets him know that she misses him and is waiting for him in Cuba.

El día de hoy les traigo otra recomendación de película y en esta oportunidad estaremos hablando sobre El Cuarteto de la Habana, una película cubana del director Fernando Colomo. Data del años 1998 y cuenta con un guión hecho por Julio Carrillo y Fernando Colomo. Ambientada en la ciudad de la Habana, este clasico de la comedia nos trae la historia de Walter, un pianista que reside en España y que decide viajar a Cuba a reencontrarse con el pasado. Acompáñame en este viaje dónde los enredos y mentiras serán parte de la orden del día y que de seguro te sacará una sonrisa.
Walter ve su vida sumida en el caos y en el fracaso: no tiene la carrera de músico que tanto deseaba por el contrario, irónicamente trabaja como conserje en un local de jazz en Madrid, su abuela acaba de fallecer, está lleno de deudas y su novia a quedado embarazada. Todo parece pintar mal para él pero un día descubre (mientras hurgaba en su casa) entre las baldosas del suelo dónde vivía su abuela y él, una vieja caja con varios recuerdos. Dentro de ella se encuentra una cinta de vídeo que será reveladora: su madre, Lita, (de quién su padre y abuela jamás quisieron hablar) le ha dejado un saludo junto a su hermana Diana, dónde le hace saber que lo extraña y lo espera en Cuba.
Realizing that in reality his mother has never forgotten him and that in fact she was following up with him through letters, he decides to embark on a trip to Havana to meet his family. Leaving everything behind. It is there that during the Madrid-Havana flight he meets Segis, a cabin crew member with whom he shares a few words. Arriving in the city of modern Havana, he meets his family. His mother and sister seem surprised by this fact because in reality Lita hides a big secret: she has supplanted the identity of Walter's real mother, since the original one has died and she has taken advantage of this to keep the inheritance. Walter does not know it but his surprise will be even greater when he meets Segis (the cabin crewman he met on his flight to Havana) as his sister's fiancé and who, in addition, has lied to the family saying he is an airline pilot.
In a tangle of lies, this comical family quartet will give Walter to understand that his idea of finding a welcoming family will become a dream. Between stories and laughter, we will also see the participation of Walter's quartet, a group that he found by chance thanks to his sister Diana's interest in making him look bad in front of a music producer. The Havana Quartet is also the name of Walter's group. A desperate attempt to fulfill his dream of becoming a great musician and succeed in the United States. A fact that is also very reminiscent of the film Havana Blues, although in a different context, music is also a vital part of this comic story.
Dándose cuenta de que en realidad su madre jamás lo olvidó y que de hecho le hacía seguimiento a través de cartas, decide embarcarse en un viaje con destino a la Habana para conocer a su familia. Dejando todo atrás. Es allí que durante el vuelo Madrid-Habana conoce a Segis, un tripulante de cabina con quién comparte algunas palabras. Al llegar a la ciudad de la moderna Habana, se encuentra con su familia. Su madre y hermana parecen sorprendidas ante este hecho pues en realidad Lita esconde un gran secreto: ella a suplantado la identidad de la verdadera madre de Walter, pues la original a muerto y ella a aprovechado eso para quedarse con la herencia. Walter no lo sabe pero su sorpresa será aún mayor cuando se encuentra a Segis (el tripulante de cabina que conoció en su vuelo hasta la Habana) cómo el prometido de su hermana y qué además, este a mentido a la familia diciendo que es piloto de avión.
En una maraña de mentiras, este cómico cuarteto familiar dará a entender a Walter que su idea de encontrar una familia acogedora pasará a ser un sueño. Entre cuentos y risas, veremos también la participación del cuarteto de Walter, grupo que a encontrado de forma fortuita gracias al interés de su hermana Diana por hacerlo quedar mal ante una productora de música. El Cuarteto de la Habana, es también el nombre del grupo de Walter. Un intento desesperado por cumplir su sueño de ser un gran músico y triunfar en Estados Unidos. Hecho que recuerda mucho también a la película Habana Blues, aunque en un contexto diferente, la música también forma parte vital de esta cómica historia.
With the performances of Ernesto Alterio, Laura Barrio, Javier Cámara and above all, Mirtha Ibarra (who played in the movie Guantanamera) we can expect a unique performance full of spontaneity and charisma. In each scene, the drama can be felt but the humor lightens the situation and turns it into something worth laughing at. I believe that the conflicting context that exists between the Cuban and Spanish realities also serves to explain the outcomes that occurred in Walter's family. A Cuba where Lita decided to survive in her own way and Walter's father escaping and pretending to have a life of luxury. Which would lead to each of them choosing to keep secrets and create lies.
Finally my friends, I can only tell you that this is a great movie for Cuban and Spanish film lovers. I think this is the first time I make a recommendation in this line but it will certainly not be the last because there are several gems that I would like to bring here. I invite you as always to discover, watch, investigate, know and love every corner that cinema has to offer. Above all, Latin American cinema, which has a lot to offer and is of great value. Con las actuaciones de Ernesto Alterio, Laura Barrio, Javier Cámara y sobre todo, de Mirtha Ibarra (quién actuó en la película Guantanamera) podemos esperar una singular actuación llena de mucha espontaneidad y carisma. En cada escena, el drama puede sentirse pero el humor aligera la situación y lo convierte en algo digno de hacer reir. Considero que el contexto conflictivo que existe entre la realidad Cubana y la Española sirve también también para explicar los desenlaces que ocurrieron en la familia de Walter. Una Cuba dónde Lita decidió sobrevivir a su manera y el padre de Walter escapando y fingiendo tener una vida de lujo. Lo que conllevaría a que cada uno de ellos optará por guardar secretos y crear mentiras.
Finalmente amigos míos, no me queda más que decirles que esta es una gran película destinada para los amantes del cine Cubano y Español. Creo que es la primera vez que hago una recomendación de esta línea pero sin duda no será la última pues varias joyitas que me gustaría traer para acá. Los invito cómo siempre a descubrir, ver, investigar, conocer y amar cada rincón que nos ofrece el cine. Sobre todo, el cine Latinoamericano que tiene bastante que dar y de alto valor.
