Introduction

In the 1990s I remember a lot of animation from animation studio Pixar. One of my favorites that came out in the late 1990s is "A Bug's Life". I was in awe of its style of animation back then it was in its time one of the most popular animations and a box office hit worldwide.

More than two decades later I still love watching it and this time I re-watched it to write a review about its interesting story about ants and grasshoppers.

The Film's Narrative

The film's story is about an ant who got his entire colony in trouble against a tyrannical grasshopper who is exploiting them to get what they wanted.

Thoughts

"A Bug's Life" was able to catch my interest because of its very neat style of animation, very clear dialogue, and interesting story which spotlights an ant because of his huge mistake which puts his colony in danger, his name is Flik (check a screenshot of Flik from the movie below).

"A Bug's Life" actually captured my imagination back then because of course I was only a kid and with that being said, I was not able to recognize that there were some details that I think the animators deliberately changed how the ants walk. Instead of the ants walking on multiple feet, they are made just like humans, standing on two feet (check out a screenshot from the movie where the ants are standing on two feet).

"A Bug's Life" should have made the ants walk like real ants. I think the animators made the ants walk like humans for the audience and it worked because when I first watched I was immediately hooked on it and until now it is still a very interesting anime to watch.

"A Bug's Life" is brilliantly animated but it was not able to portray the correct structure of an "ant hill" just like what was shown when the ants run inside it, the space pathways should only be double the size of an ant (check out a screenshot of an inside of an ant hill below).

Conclusion

Animation wise "A Bug's Life" is brilliantly made. The appearance of the ants is of course like ants and the grasshoppers are also like grasshoppers my only take on the animation is they made the ants walk on their two feet instead of multiple feet just like the real ant.

Plot wise it is also brilliant as the idea of grasshoppers taking advantage of ants is unique. Although in real life it is not happening I commend the imagination of the creator in making grasshoppers as the antagonists of the movie.

This animation is worth looking back and rewatching. Its story is still one of the most unique when it comes to animation. For sure "A Bug's Life" has become an inspiration to many animators around the world. It is worth watching again.

I really liked this movie when I was a kid. Maybe the animation had a few creative decisions, probably because 3D animation was something too new at the time? Idk, maybe they wasn't able to animate too many feet or they just didn't wanted to 😅

Really nice review!

Yes, it was the time when animation movies were relatively new. I guess they just want to make the ants look like human 😁
