Intro

We all know that each country in the world plays espionage within and outside its borders. It is amazing to see how they are portrayed in the movies, their style of living, and how they communicate. One movie that I like in particular is "Commitment" starring Choi Seung-Hyun (better known as T.O.P), also better known as a member of the famous K-pop group BigBang. One of the reasons why I watched this movie is because BigBang is my favorite K-pop group. I even named my scooter BigBang.

Narrative

The Commitment is a very suspenseful spy, action, and drama movie from South Korea set in the world of spies operating within South Korea and North Korea. The Commitment paints a grim reality of how espionage is carried out and how a person in it lives their daily life. The Commitment is very creative and sometimes on-point in showing how an operative (assassin) operates and how they communicate within their organization is so amazing.

Thoughts

The beginning of the movie is very very interesting as it starts to paint the narrative of the movie, from labeling a loyal as a traitor to killing rival operatives, and the police were portrayed as very experienced enough to tackle such issues.

The beginning of the movie will make anyone fixated on their seats as the plot is masterfully crafted to mimic the world of spies on how they were run and how police and authorities were able to keep up with them tying up the pieces together.

The protagonist, as portrayed in the movie was also masterfully created. Who would have thought that the son of a labeled "traitor" assassin would become the deadliest assassin for his group when he was only 18 years old?

Really, no one in the rival group would ever think that the son of an assassin would also become an assassin. Making the protagonist a very "reserved" individual makes me think that it was intentional to keep him out of the radar of everyone, especially the rival spy organization that killed two of their members.

In trying to make the protagonist able to accomplish his mission they made him show little to no emotions which is very typical for an assassin as everyone would think including me.

The beginning of the movie is very convincing, the acting, the killing, the plot, the cinematography, and the emotions of the actors themselves from the protagonist, to the police, and to the rival groups.

I have seen some spy movies and "Commitment" is one that stands out to me. Not because it has a very starting plot but also because I am very interested in the actor themselves and also make me interested that the movie portrays some aspects of the people and government of both South Korea and North Korea.

I do not know if I am convinced or not when some of the North Korean refugees were very amazed when they first arrived in South Korea showing amazement at the tall buildings and skyscrapers that they have seen for the first time. Needles today I have mixed feelings about it.

It makes me think about how the South Korean government will treat the defectors from North Korea. I think the movie has failed to show it. It would have been nice to see a movie about North Korean defectors.

After the movie has established its narrative now comes how the movie would portray the way of living of the actors (protagonists and antagonists alike). It surprised me because the protagonists are living in plain sight doing normal things that normal person does. I think there is some truth in this movie and it successfully portrays some aspects of the life of an assassin. Really, living normally is the best cover for anyone doing some very sensitive things let alone being an assassin.

The story made me think that any person that you would meet could be an assassin (good assassin or bad assassin). But we would not be able to know it because they are so good at hiding their real identities. While reading this blog of mine you might think that one of your officemates right now is an assassin. Sorry for rattling your peace. Forgive me.

Almost midway through the movie, the first real action happens between the dreaded killer and the protagonist. The fight is nothing flashy but is very classic and very convincing as the protagonist is able to subdue the killer (probably because of age). I thought that the killer and the protagonist would only be going to face-off at the end of the movie but it happened near midway of the movie.

The emotion and humanity of the protagonist are also shown in the movie as he buys a sweater for his comrade and a hairpin for his younger sister.

The story paints a grim situation and could be a reality when it is revealed that no agent has come home. That is when the protagonist realizes that his mission is not as simple as killing he must come up victorious against treacherous comrades.

Conlcusion

After watching I feel sad because of the unhappy ending. The movie could have been much lighter if the protagonist lived in peace together with his sister (it would have been the best outcome). Still, it is a good movie except that it has a sad ending.

I learned in story that the something similar could be happening in our society today we just don't know because espionage is a complex thing and no information could satisfy anyone's curiosity.

I do recommend this movie if you are into espionage and if you are a fan of BigBang and T.O.P. this is a must-watch movie. T.O.P. is so handsome in this movie and he is a viable action star in his own right.

Overall, the movie is likable it just makes me sad because the movie has a very gloomy emotion all throughout. They could have made it lighter but I guess they just want to capture the realities of espionage as close as possible.
