Introduction

I have seen a lot of crime, drama, and mystery films in my entire and I thought the ones that I saw were the best and that I was never going to see a better one but I was wrong. When I saw "Knives Out," I thought to myself that there is still going to be a film that will be better and will stand out from the rest.

The Film's Narrative

The film's story is about a nurse named Marta Cabrera whose fate was entangled by an event that changed her life forever.

Thoughts

Knives Out's beginning scene and background music are amazing. It is the kind of opening scenes that commonly make me hooked to watching a movie until the end unless I get bored and stop watching entirely. Also, the angle of the mansion shown in the opening is great and adds to the film's great opening scene.

"Knives Out" has an ensemble cast which also makes the film attractive to fans. "Knives Out" was able to make a great impression on me because of course of its cast.

I noticed that in the film there is a decoration at the back of the chair where the family members were being questioned on the death of Harlan Thrombey, the decoration is circular and there are lots of knives in it (see images below). I think that since the movie is titled Knives Out they came out with an idea of knives as decoration on the set, which I think is very creative. The last time that I saw blades as decoration was in a series on television.

Knives Out's scene transition is not very confusing and I like it not like some mystery film that gets you very confused and you can only understand the whole plot at the end of the film but Knives Out is not. It will not confuse you and it is a good thing that the majority of the story happened at a mansion owned by Harlan Thombrey, the man that made the lives of all in that involve upside down.

"Knives Out" lacked emotion about the death of a family member and throughout the film. But I guess that Knives Out was made that way to show that this kind of family environment exists. I do believe that this kind of family relationship exists and Knives Out has perfectly made an example of it onscreen.

The use of an invisible ink on this film is brilliant. I never guessed that the letter intended for another member of a family was written in invisible ink (check the image below). I was surprised at the end of the film when the family member got hold of the letter I thought she was going to burn it but I quickly realized that the ink would become visible when heated.

Another great idea that this film has is the "puke" thing when Marta Cabrera (Ana De Armas) says a lie. I think this is the first time that I watched one of the characters puke when saying a lie, yet another great idea.

It always astonishes me when a film features a scene where a dog contributes significantly to the story of the film. In Knives Out's case, a dog gave Marta the piece of wood that was broken apart when Marta climbed through a secret passage of the mansion. It was not only done once but twice. I wonder how they made the dog do that act, twice.

Aside from the moment of revelation on what caused the suicide of Harlan Thrombey, I thought I was not going to see any surprises from the film but I was surprised when the "will" of Harlan Thrombey was read in front of all the family members everyone were shocked when all of the fortune of Harlan Thrombey went to Marta Cabrera.

The chaos after the "will" reading is brilliant. It is chaotic yet shows the civility and professionalism of the family members in addition to the fact that there are not many vulgar words being thrown towards the one and only who inherited all of the fortune, Marta Cabrera.

"What I am supposed to do, grab the number with my teeth?" this is the line that made me smile a little bit. Right at this moment I find the film very light and not too stressful but it did make me want to know what happened to Harlan Thrombey.

After the "will" reading, Hugh Ransom Drysdale's (Chris Evans) actions convinced me that he is only helping Marta because he only wants to get a share of the inheritance which I think Marta will be obliged to do. After all, Ransom has her on the ropes by saying that he will help her in getting out of the mess and that she is not going to jail. But little did Marta know that Ransom was plotting something bad against Marta so that would go to jail. But luckily so didn't.

There's also a funny scene in the film with Hugh Ransom Drysdale attempting to kill Marta with one of the knives from the decoration. The funny thing is that the knife is a retractable knife (see image below). After the scene the case was finally solved, Marta committed no crime and Hugh went to jail.

Conclusion

Knives Out is brilliantly made and is a must-watch mystery movie. If you have seen lots of mystery films before this one is for you since. It is a unique crime, mystery, and drama film that will entertain you and you will surely marvel at how good the storyline is. Aside from that, it will not stress you out heavily because this film is very light yet very effective in portraying every scene.
