The Devil You Know directed by Charles Murray || An interesting disappointment [Eng/Esp]

With a title like that I had expected a lot of action or at the least something diabolical. At some point I started to question if it was a gospel film or a horrific one because it had every tendency to deliver both themes had the film maker decided to stick with any. There's really so many to do with the devil you know and it just has to be done in a way that intrigues the audience. I think this movie failed to achieve any of that even if it had so much potential.
It tries to show us how much family loyalty can play a role in affecting some decisions we make and Marcus Cowans (Omar Epps) was caught in the web of family and doing everything he could to protect them. He's recently released from jail and it kind of comes with this black sheep tag as he tries to get his life back in order with the help of his family. His dad(Glynn Turman) gets him a new job driving buses and his mother(Vanessa Bell Callaway) tries to match him up with a young lady.
It feels awkward at first for him but soon him and (Erica Tazel) a nurse that had been set up for him kind of just connected. At this point I don't know, I was kind of confused where the whole story was going because it really started very slow and for someone like me who has the patience to watch movies that start slow and then build up to the more tense and fun part. I can patiently wait minutes but then if the writer drags the action for too long I might just lose interest and probably sleep off.
The same night he met the nurse he happened to drive his drunk elder brother home and mistakingly noticed that he has a set of rare baseball cards which he claimed he got from one of his friends Theo Rossi. I could feel a little tension build up here but I wasn't really sure where it was headed and that's where suspense comes in. It keeps you calculating and trying to understand what's going to happen next, who's going to die next or what next twist is coming next.
After three months Marcus starts to get his life back in order and it's all thanks to the nurse and they seemed to be having a pretty decent relationship. There's comes up stories about a family being robbed three month ago and the parents murdered living the son in a coma, which he wakes up from three months later. He ends up saying something about his father's rare baseball cards. I'm going to spoil the movie if I go on but for real I was expecting a lot at this point, there's a murder case looming and there's a probability of it leading back to the Cowan family.
I must say I expected a lot more, the suspected criminals played really flat roles and they did more of shouting, I was even scared of Rossi thinking yeah the bad guy is in the building and then comes this boring detective who tries to solve the murder case. I can try to understand what the Director Charles Murray was trying to play it safe, but playing safe almost cost him a good movie. The Character Marcus was well played by Omar Epps even if he didn't have much to work with. I got scared when he was dragged in the middle of the whole drama. Imagine what it'll be like to just come out of jail and still get involved in a murder case.
Everything he'd ever worked to build could have been destroyed, so there's surely a tension there and with a blink of an eye that could end up in productive terror that'll make the viewers hearts beating faster and their interest running wild but all we got was more scenes showing family and most of them ended up in unproductive conversations and some back and forth uninteresting drama. At some point I had expected to see a little twist, yeah we got a little bit of that when the devil was exposed and again I was like yes! Now this movie is going to have a great ending, one they'll keep me up all night thinking.
But Charles didn't do that, instead he dwelled on the theme of family, family bond and whatever family ish you could think off. If I was Marcus I'm sure it'll have been really hard for me and there would have been no easy way to settle the whole issue, but I felt something had to happen, someone had to get hurt, to make the movie have that nice ending. Someone did get hurt but then I guess it was just to finish it in an awkward way. I was like, really?, Is that the end or is there something more?
There was sadly nothing more but ending preview with all the extras. I must say I had no problem with the casts Omar Epps, Michael Ealy, William Catlett, Glynn Turman, Curtiss Cook, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Erica Tazel, Vaughn W. Hebron, B.J. Britt, Murray Gray, Michael Beach, Keisha Epps, Ashley A. Williams, and Theo Rossi, they were really great and I must say they delivered their roles well. If the characters had been well developed and the story opened up to more suspense and an ending that'll leave the audience in awe then it would surely had been a great movie.
I wasn't surprised when I saw the ratings of IMDB and Rotten tomatoes, seemed a lot more people had felt the same way I had felt. The setting was nice and the whole editing was ok. Everything was well set and it just needed that touch of genius or whatever filmmakers call it to sell this movie out. If you're not patient of you're bored at home doing nothing then you can actually see this movie. I'll give it a rating of 5 out of 10.

Con un título así me esperaba mucha acción o al menos algo diabólico. En algún momento empecé a cuestionar si era una película evangélica o de terror porque tenía toda la tendencia a ofrecer ambos temas si el realizador hubiera decidido quedarse con alguno. En realidad, hay muchas cosas que hacer con el diablo que conoces y sólo hay que hacerlo de forma que intrigue al público. Creo que esta película no logró nada de eso aunque tuviera tanto potencial.
Intenta mostrarnos hasta qué punto la lealtad familiar puede influir en algunas decisiones que tomamos y Marcus Cowans (Omar Epps) estaba atrapado en la red de la familia y hacía todo lo posible por protegerla. Recientemente ha salido de la cárcel y eso le ha llevado a ser una especie de oveja negra, ya que intenta poner su vida en orden con la ayuda de su familia. Su padre (Glynn Turman) le consigue un nuevo trabajo como conductor de autobuses y su madre (Vanessa Bell Callaway) intenta emparejarlo con una joven.
Al principio le resulta incómodo, pero pronto él y (Erica Tazel), una enfermera a la que le han tendido una trampa, conectan. En este punto no sé, estaba un poco confundido hacia donde iba toda la historia porque realmente comenzó muy lento y para alguien como yo que tiene la paciencia para ver películas que comienzan lento y luego construir hasta la parte más tensa y divertida. Puedo esperar pacientemente minutos pero luego si el escritor arrastra la acción por mucho tiempo puedo perder el interés y probablemente dormirme.
La misma noche que conoció a la enfermera, condujo a su hermano mayor borracho a su casa y se dio cuenta por error de que tenía un juego de tarjetas de béisbol raras que, según él, había conseguido de uno de sus amigos, Theo Rossi. Podía sentir que se acumulaba un poco de tensión aquí, pero no estaba muy seguro de hacia dónde se dirigía, y ahí es donde entra el suspense. Te mantiene calculando y tratando de entender lo que va a pasar a continuación, quién va a morir después o qué giro va a dar.
Después de tres meses Marcus empieza a poner su vida en orden y todo es gracias a la enfermera y parecían tener una relación bastante decente. Surgen historias sobre una familia que fue robada hace tres meses y los padres asesinados viviendo el hijo en coma, del que despierta tres meses después. Acaba diciendo algo sobre las raras tarjetas de béisbol de su padre. Voy a estropear la película si continúo, pero en realidad me esperaba mucho en este punto, hay un caso de asesinato que se avecina y hay una probabilidad de que conduzca de nuevo a la familia Cowan.
Debo decir que esperaba mucho más, los presuntos criminales hicieron papeles realmente planos y se dedicaron más a gritar, incluso me asusté de Rossi pensando que sí el malo está en el edificio y luego viene este detective aburrido que trata de resolver el caso de asesinato. Puedo tratar de entender que el Director Charles Murray estaba tratando de ir a lo seguro, pero jugar a lo seguro casi le cuesta una buena película. El personaje Marcus fue bien interpretado por Omar Epps aunque no tenía mucho con que trabajar. Me asusté cuando fue arrastrado en medio de todo el drama. Imagínate lo que será salir de la cárcel y verse envuelto en un caso de asesinato.
Todo lo que había trabajado para construir podría haber sido destruido, así que seguramente hay una tensión ahí y con un parpadeo que podría terminar en un terror productivo que hará que los corazones de los espectadores latan más rápido y su interés se desborde, pero todo lo que obtuvimos fue más escenas mostrando a la familia y la mayoría de ellas terminaron en conversaciones improductivas y algún drama de ida y vuelta sin interés. En algún momento esperaba ver un pequeño giro, sí, tuvimos un poco de eso cuando el diablo fue expuesto y de nuevo me dije ¡sí! Ahora esta película va a tener un gran final, uno que me mantendrá despierto toda la noche pensando.
Pero Charles no hizo eso, sino que se centró en el tema de la familia, el vínculo familiar y cualquier cosa familiar que se te ocurra. Si yo fuera Marcus, estoy seguro de que habría sido muy duro para mí y no habría habido una forma fácil de resolver todo el asunto, pero sentí que tenía que pasar algo, que alguien tenía que salir herido, para que la película tuviera ese bonito final. Alguien salió herido, pero supongo que fue sólo para terminar de una manera incómoda. Me quedé como, ¿en serio?, ¿es ese el final o hay algo más?
Lamentablemente no había nada más que el avance del final con todos los extras. Debo decir que no tuve ningún problema con el reparto Omar Epps, Michael Ealy, William Catlett, Glynn Turman, Curtiss Cook, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Erica Tazel, Vaughn W. Hebron, B.J. Britt, Murray Gray, Michael Beach, Keisha Epps, Ashley A. Williams, y Theo Rossi, estuvieron muy bien y debo decir que cumplieron bien sus papeles. Si los personajes hubieran estado bien desarrollados y la historia se hubiera abierto a más suspense y a un final que dejara al público boquiabierto, seguramente habría sido una gran película.
No me sorprendió cuando vi las calificaciones de IMDB y Rotten tomatoes, parecía que mucha gente había sentido lo mismo que yo. La ambientación era bonita y todo el montaje estaba bien. Todo estaba bien ambientado y solo le faltaba ese toque de genialidad o como sea que lo llamen los cineastas para vender esta película. If you're not patient of you're bored at home doing nothing then you can actually see this movie. I'll give it a rating of 5 out of 10.
