Tsunami: Extreme Measures for Extreme Situations [ENG/ESP]

I will start by saying that it is a very complete film, usually films based on disasters focus mostly on the "super natural" event because it is the one that attracts the most attention, however this film is not like that, it is the second Norwegian film I see of the disaster theme and both give more weight to other issues, which I think is excellent and quite balanced.

In this film we can notice a love relationship between a single father and a scientist, both work for the same company but in different departments, so each has its relevant participation in the story. Everything begins quite pleasant, the film shows us healthy social relationships between all those who work in the company, the main business is oil drilling, that makes the government of the Norwegian country is also involved.

This is the main context and it is the situation that is going to be broken, what practice is life to teach us that things can change from one moment to another, and more in this type of work in the open sea where the risk is quite high. The protagonist and her inseparable companion are called to a long distance exploration mission, they handle a kind of aquatic "drone" with which they have the ability to explore under the sea, so after an unexplained disaster in one of the plants they begin to worry about what happened, but everything remains there at times.

Confidentiality agreements still exist in our days, they are little known but when they are applied those involved cannot say a word about what happened, no matter that later when everything comes to light it will be completely distorted. That called my attention too much because there really are few real news that we hear or see nowadays, only the elites manage the reality of how things are, we usually hear what "they" want us to hear, how interesting as in this film we are led to think about that aspect.

Comenzare por decir que es una película muy completa, por lo general las películas basadas en desastres se enfocan más que todo en el evento “súper natural” porque es el que más llama la atención, sin embargo esta película no es así, es el segundo film noruego que veo de la temática desastres y en ambos dan más pesos a otros temas, lo cual me parece excelente y bastante equilibrado.

En este film podremos notar una relación amorosa entre un padre soltero y una científica, ambos trabajan para la misma compañía pero en departamentos diferentes, por lo que cada uno tiene su participación relevante en la historia. Todo comienza bastante ameno, la película nos muestra relaciones sociales saludables entre todos los que trabajan en la compañía, el negocio principal es la perforación de petróleo, eso hace que el gobierno del país noruego también se encuentre involucrado.

Este es el contexto principal y es la situación que se va a romper, que practica es la vida para enseñarnos que las cosas pueden cambiar de un momento a otro, y más en ese tipo de trabajos a mar abierto donde el riesgo es bastante elevado. La protagonista y su inseparable compañero son llamados a una misión de exploración a larga distancia, ellos manejan una especie de “dron” acuático con el cual tienen la capacidad de explorar bajo el mar, así que luego de un desastre inexplicable en una de las plantas comienzan a preocuparse de lo sucedido, pero todo queda allí por momentos.

Los acuerdos de confidencialidad existen aún en nuestros días, son poco conocidos pero cuando se aplican los involucrados no pueden decir palabra alguna de lo sucedido, sin importar que luego cuando todo salga a la luz sea completamente tergiversado. Eso me llamo la atención en demasía porque realmente son pocas las noticias reales que oímos o vemos actualmente, solo las elites manejan la realidad de cómo son las cosas, nosotros generalmente escuchamos lo que “ellos” quieren que escuchemos, que interesante como en esta película se nos lleva a pensar en ese aspecto.

Later in the story the disaster that every viewer expects occurs and providentially the protagonist's partner is among the workers of the sunken plants because of the tsunami. The only thing that was not clear to me was if the disaster is produced by the company or was a natural cause, I think the first one because of how the subsequent events unfolded, but at the time it was not clear to me because they did not show it, in that sense is the only thing I did not like since I lost a little the idea of the film.

Even so, everything was very well done, the Norwegian actors are definitely doing well with their dramatic roles, as in "The Great Earthquake" they left no reason for complaints, each of them, from the one in charge of the operation, the prime minister, the couple in love and their good friend developed their characters very well. The setting at sea excellent and the disaster scenes few but well felt, gave a plus to the story.

Más adelante en la historia ocurre el desastre que todo espectador espera y providencialmente la pareja de la protagonista se encuentra entre los operarios de las plantas hundidas a causa del maremoto. Lo único que no me quedo claro fue si el desastre es producido por la empresa o fue una causa natural, pienso que la primera por cómo se desarrollaron los eventos posteriores, pero en el momento no me quedo claro porque no lo demostraron, en ese sentido es la única cosa que no me gusto ya que le perdí un poco la idea a la película.

Aun así, todo fue muy bien hecho, los actores noruegos definitivamente lo están haciendo bien con sus papeles dramáticos, al igual que en “El gran terremoto” no dejaron motivo de quejas, cada uno de ellos, desde el encargado de la operación, el primer ministro, la pareja enamorada y su buen amigo desarrollaron muy bien sus personajes. La ambientación en el mar excelente y las escenas del desastre pocas pero bien sentidas, le dieron un plus a la historia.

Decisions under pressure / Decisiones bajo presión

Of the whole movie what I liked the most were the decisions involved in the middle of the disaster, on the one hand we have the company team that is in charge of taking full responsibility for what happens, they must try to stop a large scale tsunami or else not only they will be affected but other parts of the world, on the other hand we have the protagonist who learns that her partner is alive in the plant but does not get the support of the company to go to rescue him, what weighs more? A life or many lives?, Interesting question, for me they are all equally valuable, but if you were in a position where you had to choose between one and many, what would you choose?

Up to this point the movie leads us to think, in the end everyone made their decision, and obviously there were consequences, but it is interesting how things develop, and it is to reflect on our own lives, regardless of the case at some point we will have to make decisions of such magnitude where others will be benefited or harmed, if we are parents we do it every day, our children depend on our decisions, so I hope we do it well.

If you have read me this far, I thank you, and obviously you can understand that I recommend the movie, I found it excellent, it is 105 minutes that are enjoyed from beginning to end, zero waste, so if you are a lover of these themes find your popcorn and enjoy this good production.

De toda la película lo que más me gusto fueron las decisiones involucradas en medio del desastre, por un lado tenemos al equipo de la empresa que se encarga de asumir toda la responsabilidad de lo que ocurre, deben intentar detener un maremoto a gran escala o de lo contrario no solo ellos se verán afectados sino otras partes del mundo, por otro lado tenemos a la protagonista que se entera que su pareja está viva en la planta pero no obtiene el apoyo de la empresa para ir a rescatarlo, ¿Qué pesa más? ¿Una vida o muchas vidas?, interesante pregunta, para mi todas son igual de valiosas, pero si estuvieras en una posición donde te tocara elegir entre una y muchas, ¿Qué elegirías?

Hasta este punto nos lleva a pensar la película, al final cada quien tomo su decisión, y evidentemente hubieron consecuencias, pero es interesante como se desarrollan las cosas, y es de reflexionar en nuestras propias vidas, indiferentemente del caso en algún momento nos tocara tomar decisiones de tal envergadura donde otros se verán beneficiados o perjudicados, si somos padres lo hacemos a diario, nuestros hijos dependen de nuestras decisiones, así que espero que lo hagamos bien.
