The best TV show I've ever seen, honestly. - Better Call Saul

In the vast horizon of what is TV, more in these times where we have all kinds of services and companies creating all kinds of shows, it can be complicated to find those series that explore elegantly what a good series means, I remember that at the time Breaking Bad was one that very few people saw from season one, but certainly had the quality to deserve all the eyes of the people, something similar I think will happen here.

Better Call Saul is a show that began with many doubts, part of them started by being linked to a product of great success as it was Breaking Bad, it was said that the series was going to be an easy cashgrab focusing on the small-time lawyer Saul Goodman who was the one who solved everything that the protagonists in Breaking Bad required to solve, is a character that despite being the comic relief of the series if you put yourself to think well was a character of the most interesting.

Still there was a lot of doubt involved, and the first few seasons were not quite what the public expected, of course Bob Odenkirk, starring as the lawyer has a notorious charisma when he is behind the character, he is someone you immediately identify "There's Saul Goodman!".... we are in the early years of the lawyer formally known as Jimmy McGill, a public defender who makes a living defending those who can't afford a serious lawyer, he lives behind a beauty salon, in a small wardrobe that he also uses as an office, he is not yet the winner we see in Breaking Bad.

We learn about Jimmy's motivations for being a lawyer and it is clear from practically the first episode, legal ethics and how it provides a central attraction during each of the seasons, from the beginning we see that the methods and arguments at the time of practicing the legal profession

But since the whole series can't just be about Jimmy solving minor cases and playing on the edge of the law we have to introduce a supporting cast, which can be the trickiest thing if your point is to focus on one character, for me usually when my attention is drawn away from the character I'm interested in I immediately turn around and see something else but it's one of the things this show does best, it builds completely new believable characters.

There are a quartet of characters that take the spotlight without a doubt and this I will say in order of importance in the story and development of the future Saul Goodman, Kim Wexler is the first one we will notice with her back to Jimmy, she is the friend who is always there to listen to him and she is also one of the most promising lawyers in the law firm of Jimmy's older brother who is our second in line: Chuck, who is the successful lawyer with high standards, he is everything we think of when we think of lawyers,

There's also an old acquaintance, Mike from Breaking Bad but here we explore his origins as well as those of Gustavo Fring, they both have practically a separate story to the classic Jimmy and company lawyer show and involve much more of the energy we know from Breaking Bad with a war against the Mexican drug cartel.

Each of these arcs has its own time in each of the episodes, if it is true that we see much less action than with its sequel-prequel, there is much more character drama and conflicts that involve much more thoughts and morals of the protagonists, the parallels and the care of the details and scenery is something that has awakened in me much interest in film and to value the care that a production team puts into their work.

It's a very slow paced series, it takes its time to communicate what its characters feel and the complex emotions that any human being goes through, one of the examples that the series has and that I like the most is the relationship between the two main brothers, Jimmy and Chuck, both lawyers but with very different points of view about what the law is and how it is ethical to apply it, the most tense moments (ironically and knowing that in the show there is a drug war on the other side) come from their dialogues and dynamics.

That's not to say that the rest of the cast has nothing to do, each of the subplots are filled with a tremendous performance in both acting, cinematography and scripting, to the point where every action carries weight and you can feel it impacting the world of the characters.

Forging the path of a series towards greatness is a difficult thing to do especially when you want to make a project as dense as Better Call Saul is, it is a series that is not afraid to make the viewer uncomfortable with 5 minutes of silence and some common shots in the halls of a courtroom, it knows how to play its cards and above all knows what a well told story is worth, it does not take shortcuts when it comes to giving its characters the development of attitudes and does it with a naturalness and at the same time complexity rarely explored especially at this level of quality.

En el vasto horizonte de lo que es la TV, mas en estos momentos en donde tenemos todo tipo de servicios y compañias creando todo tipo de shows, puede ser complicado dar con esas series que exploren de forma elegante lo que significa una buena serie, recuerdo que en su momento Breaking Bad fue una que muy pocas personas vieron desde la temporada uno, pero que sin duda tenia la calidad para merecerse todos los ojos de las personas, algo similar creo que pasara aca.

Better Call Saul es un show que empezo con muchas dudas, parte de ellas partian por estar vinculado con un producto de gran exito como lo fue Breaking Bad, se decia que la serie iba a ser un cashgrab facil enfocandose en el abogado de poca monta Saul Goodman que era el que resolvia todo lo que los protagonistas en Breaking Bad requerian resolver, es un personaje que a pesar de ser el alivio comico de la serie si te ponias a pensar bien era un personaje de lo mas interesante.

Aun asi habia mucha duda de por medio, y las primeras temporadas no fueron del todo lo que se esperaba el publico, por supuesto Bob Odenkirk, protagonista como el abogado tiene un carisma notorio cuando esta detras del personaje, es alguien a quien identificas enseguida "Ahi esta Saul Goodman!"... estamos en los primeros años del abogado formalmente conocido como Jimmy McGill, un defensor publico que se gana la vida defendiendo a quienes no pueden pagarse un abogado serio, vive detras de un salon de belleza, en un pequeño closet que usa tambien como oficina, aun no es el ganador que vemos en Breaking Bad.

Vamos enterandonos de las motivaciones de Jimmy en esto de ser abogado y esta claro un tema desde el practicamente el primer episodio, la etica legal y como proporciona un atractivo central durante cada una de las temporadas, desde el comienzo vemos que los metodos y argumentos a la hora de ejercer la profesion de abogado

Pero ya que toda la serie no puede basarse solamente en Jimmy resolviendo casos menores y jugando al borde con la ley tenemos que introducir a un elenco soporte, que puede ser lo mas complicado si tu punto fuere es enfocarte en un solo personaje, a mi usualmente cuando me desvian la atencion del personaje que me interesa de inmediato doy la vuelta y veo otra cosa pero es una de las cosas que mejor le sale a este show, construye personajes creibles completamente nuevos.

Hay un cuarteto de personajes que toman el foco sin duda y esto lo dire por orden de importancia en la historia y desarrollo del futuro Saul Goodman, Kim Wexler es la primera que notaremos de espalda a Jimmy, es la amiga que siempre esta ahi para escucharlo y ademas es una de las abogadas mas prometedoras de la firma de abogados del hermano mayor de Jimmy que es nuestro segundo en lista: Chuck, que es el exitoso abogado con vara alta, es todo lo que pensamos cuando pensamos en abogados,

tambien esta un viejo conocido, Mike de Breaking Bad pero aqui exploramos sus origenes asi como los de Gustavo Fring, ellos dos tienen practicamente una historia separada a la del clasico show de abogados de Jimmy y compañia e involucra mucho mas la energia que conocemos de Breaking Bad con una guerra contra el cartel de drogas de Mexico.

Cada uno de estos arcos tiene su propio tiempo en cada uno de los episodios, si es verdad que vemos mucha menos accion que con su secuela-precuela, hay mucho mas drama de personajes y conflictos que involucran mucho mas los pensamientos y morales de los protagonistas, los paralelismos y el cuidado de los detalles y la escenografia es algo que ha despertado en mi mucho interes sobre el cine y a valorar el cuidado que le ponga un equipo de produccion a su obra.

Es una serie de un ritmo muy pausado, se toma su tiempo para comunicar lo que sienten sus personajes y las emociones complejas que atraviese cualquier ser humano, uno de los ejemplos que tiene la serie y que mas me gustan es la relacion entre los dos hermanos protagonistas, Jimmy y Chuck, ambos abogados pero con puntos e vista muy distinto sobre que es la ley y de que forma es etico aplicarla, los momentos mas tensos (ironicamente y sabiendo que en el show hay una guerra de drogas del otro lado) vienen de sus dialogos y dinamicas.

Eso no quiere decir que el resto del elenco no tenga nada que hacer, cada una de las subtramas la llenan con una performance enorme tanto en actuacion como en cinematografia y guion, a tal punto que cada accion tiene su peso y se puede sentir que impacta en el mundo de los personajes.

Forjar el camino de una serie hacia la grandeza es cosa dificil en especial cuando quieres hacer un proyecto tan denso como lo es Better Call Saul, es una serie que no teme incomodar al espectador con 5 minutos de silencio y unas tomas comunes en los salones de un juzgado, sabe jugar sus cartas y sobretodo sabe lo que vale una historia bien contada, no toma atajos a la hora de darles a sus personajes desarrollos de actitudes y lo hace con una naturalidad y a la vez complejidad muy pocas veces explorada en especial a este nivel de calidad.
