Sometimes, as my mother would say, curiosity killed the cat. That same curiosity to know what is true or not led me down a path I hadn't explored before in terms of film, and let me tell you, this quest for knowledge, this search for what lay beyond, shook my peace of mind.

After reviewing Martyrs a few days ago, a persistent question has plagued me: could there be a kernel of truth behind such cruelty? Is humanity truly capable of crossing such boundaries? That concern led me to Unit 731 from 1988, a film that portrays the terrifying reality of a group of doctors who, in order to develop biological weapons during World War II, used other human beings as subjects of experimentation. It is not only a graphic work; it is the visual testimony of absolute dehumanization.

If in the fiction of Martyrs I saw psychological conflicts, in the history of Japan I found the absolute abyss. The film recounts how human beings were reduced to mere objects of study, stripped of their names and cynically called maruta or logs. This dehumanization allowed for atrocities that defy all moral logic. What disturbed me most, beyond the historical narrative, was the director's decision to use real animals in the filming to achieve extreme realism. It's a painful paradox: trying to denounce human cruelty by committing cruel acts against innocent beings. I was left with the bitter feeling that, if the law or ethics had allowed it, the production team would have crossed the same line with human beings, simply out of "fidelity" to history.

As a teacher, I am shaken by the social conflict this reveals. What are we capable of in extreme situations when we stop seeing others as equals? But the true horror didn't end with the war. What is most outrageous is knowing that many of these "doctors of horror" not only avoided trial but were acquitted in exchange for handing over their research. Others went on to hold prominent positions in universities, government, and prestigious medical institutes in Japan.

This film left me at a moral crossroads. It's a disturbing reminder that evil isn't always a hidden monster; sometimes, it wears a white coat, runs institutions, and camouflages itself as "scientific progress." This isn't a film I'd recommend for entertainment, but rather to understand that empathy is the only thing separating us from the abyss that history has already traversed once. If you're a sensitive person like me, I don't recommend it; many of the images are difficult to watch. In fact, I can tell you that I avoided watching some of them. There are very raw and impactful scenes, and although the film is slow and the acting leaves much to be desired, the message is terrifying.

A veces la curiosidad mata al gato como diría mi madre, esa misma curiosidad por saber que es tan cierto o no; me llevó por un camino que no había andando en cuanto a temas de cine y déjenme decirles que en esta búsqueda de conocimiento por saber que había más allá sacudió mi paz mental.

Tras reseñar Mártires hace unos días, me asaltó una pregunta persistente: ¿podría existir un fondo de verdad tras semejante nivel de crueldad? ¿Es el ser humano realmente capaz de cruzar esos límites? Esa inquietud me condujo hasta Unidad 731 del año 1988, una película que retrata la aterradora realidad de un grupo de médicos que, con el fin de desarrollar armas biológicas durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, utilizaron a otros seres humanos como sujetos de experimentación. No es solo una obra cruda; es el testimonio visual de una deshumanización absoluta.

Si en la ficción de Mártires veía conflictos psicológicos, en la historia de Japón encontré el abismo absoluto. La película relata cómo los seres humanos fueron reducidos a simples objetos de estudio, despojados de sus nombres y llamados cínicamente "maruta" o troncos de madera. Esta deshumanización permitió atrocidades que desafían cualquier lógica moral. Lo que más me perturbó, más allá del relato histórico, fue la decisión del director de utilizar animales reales en la filmación para alcanzar un realismo extremo. Es una paradoja dolorosa: intentar denunciar la crueldad humana cometiendo actos crueles contra seres inocentes. Me quedó la amarga sensación de que, si las leyes o la ética lo hubieran permitido, el equipo de producción habría cruzado la misma línea con seres humanos, solo por "fidelidad" a la historia.

Como docente, me estremece el conflicto social que esto revela. ¿De qué somos capaces en situaciones extremas cuando dejamos de ver al otro como un igual? Pero el verdadero horror no terminó con la guerra. Lo más indignante es saber que muchos de estos "doctores del horror" no solo evitaron el juicio, sino que fueron absueltos a cambio de entregar sus investigaciones. Otros terminaron ocupando cargos prominentes en universidades, el gobierno y prestigiosos institutos de medicina en Japón.

Esta película me dejó en una encrucijada moral. Es un recordatorio perturbador de que la maldad no siempre es un monstruo oculto; a veces, viste bata blanca, dirige instituciones y se camufla en el "progreso científico". No es una cinta que recomiende para el entretenimiento, sino para entender que la empatía es lo único que nos separa del abismo que la historia ya recorrió una vez. Si eres una persona sensible como yo no te la recomiendo, muchas de las imágenes son difíciles de ver, de hecho puedo decirte que evité ver algunas de ellas. Escenas muy crudas e impactantes aunque es una película lenta y las actuaciones dejan mucho que desear, el mensaje es muy aterrador.
