I recently watched The Substance (2024), a film starring one of my favorite artists, the brilliant Demi Moore. This film left me thinking a lot for several days. The plot revolves around the obsessive search for eternal youth and the relentless social pressure not to age. Honestly, I don't think it's wrong to want to look good; taking care of yourself is valid. However, the film reaffirmed for me that we must accept the passage of time with dignity. Old age is part of life; it's difficult to understand and accept, but we have to learn to live with it, always striving for a dignified, healthy, and balanced life.

The weight of the story rests on two main characters who reflect the same crisis. On one hand, Elizabeth Sparkles (Demi Moore), a fading celebrity who can't bear being replaced by the relentless passage of time, and on the other, Sue (Margaret Qualley), that younger, perfect, and radiant version who emerges as the ideal solution. The chemistry and psychological tension between the two is brutal, showing how ego and desperation can shatter a person.

At first, I confess that the film's ending disappointed me a little because of how extreme it becomes. However, analyzing it from a psychological perspective, I understood that this ending, although extremely dramatic and disturbing, perfectly highlights the central message. It's a stark metaphor that there are always consequences, especially when we cross the boundaries of nature and our own identity. It reminds us that trying to fragment ourselves to fit into impossible molds only destroys us. In the end, true beauty lies in reconciling with the mirror at every stage of our existence.

I recommend it about 80%. It's not Demi Moore's best film, but I know it will make you think.

Hace poco vi La Sustancia (2024), una película protagonizada por una de mis artista favoritas, la brillante Demi Moore, esta película me dejó pensando muchísimo durante varios días. La trama gira en torno a la búsqueda obsesiva de la eterna juventud y esa presión social implacable por no envejecer. Sinceramente, no creo que esté mal querer verse bien; cuidarse es válido. Sin embargo, la cinta me hizo reafirmar que debemos aceptar el paso del tiempo con dignidad. La vejez forma parte de la vida; cuesta entenderlo y asimilarlo, pero tenemos que aprender a vivir con ello, buscando siempre una vida digna, sana y equilibrada.

El peso de la historia recae en dos personajes principales que son el reflejo de una misma crisis. Por un lado, Elizabeth Sparkles (Demi Moore), una celebridad en decadencia que no soporta ser reemplazada por el implacable paso de los años, y por el otro, Sue (Margaret Qualley), esa versión joven, perfecta y radiante que surge como la solución ideal. La química y la tensión psicológica entre ambas es brutal, mostrando cómo el ego y la desesperación pueden fragmentar a una persona.

Al principio, confieso que el final de la película me decepcionó un poco por lo extremo que se vuelve. Sin embargo, analizándolo desde un punto de vista psicológico, entendí que ese cierre, aunque sumamente dramático y perturbador, resalta a la perfección el mensaje central. Es una metáfora cruda de que siempre hay consecuencias, sobre todo cuando se cruzan los límites de la naturaleza y de la propia identidad. Nos recuerda que intentar fragmentarnos para encajar en moldes imposibles solo nos destruye. Al final, la verdadera belleza radica en reconciliarnos con el espejo en cada etapa de nuestra existencia.

Lo recomiendo en un 80%, no es la mejor película de Demi Moore pero sé que te hará reflexionar.
