This may get me some hate, but 1999's The Blair Witch Project might be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Sure, it may not be as completely inept as some of the easier targets (I'm looking at you Troll 2, The Room, and Santa With Muscles), but it's probably the movie with the greatest berth between what I was hoping for versus what I actually got.

The marketing for TBWP was absolutely genius, and it's a big piece of why my expectations were so dashed when what passed for the ending finally happened.

The trailers showed next to nothing, with an overbearing sense of dread. Likewise, the movie's web site helped set the tone as well.

What I actually got, however, was eighty minutes of nausea-inducing shaky-cam, a format I hate to this day.

The story consists of a bunch of dunderheaded stoners getting lost in the woods and spending entirely too much of the runtime arguing with each other. The "where's the map?" scene, in particular, goes on for nearly ten minutes (12.5% of the film).

Of course, there's also the legacy aspect. After the huge success this movie enjoyed in the box office, found-footage movies began popping up everywhere, creating an entire genre of horror movie I never want to see again.

Again, I realize I'm in the minority when it comes to this film, but I can't stand it and never want to see it again.

The Blair Witch Project is currently available to stream (in the USA, anyway) on HBO Max, Hulu, and the Roku Channel. It may also be available on other platforms, depending on when you read this or what country you read it from.
