While it's true that I love cinema and I love watching movies, I'm not always aware of how much time I spend on this activity until I talk to some friends after a couple of weeks without seeing each other or when they start mentioning movies they want to see and I've already seen them all. A few days ago I was chatting with some friends about the latest movies I had seen and I went to my Letterboxd profile to check them out and came across something that really surprised me.

Si bien es cierto que amo el cine y que me gusta mucho ver películas, no siempre soy consciente del mucho tiempo que dedico a esta actividad hasta que hablo con algunos amigos después de un par de semanas sin vernos o cuando comienzan a mencionar películas que quieren ver y ya las he visto todas. Hace pocos días estaba conversando con unos amigos sobre las últimas películas que había visto y fui a mi perfil en Letterboxd para revisarlas y me encontré con algo que me sorprendió.

The conversation with my friends took place on Friday, May 30th, and by that day I had seen 29 movies in the month. It seemed like a lot. It was almost a movie a day. The next day I didn't see any, but 29 films (17 of them in different theaters) in a month is quite a lot and here I want to share with you some of the titles I saw and above all how I managed to see so many films. The first thing that played in my favor were the film festivals. During May there were three different film series/festivals taking place in the city. The first one was meant to highlight German migration stories and out of the whole series I was able to see five films: In the Fade, a political thriller about a xenophobic attack starring Diane Kruger; Toubab, a funny comedy that raises the bar on what you would be willing to do for your best friend; I Was. I Am. I Will Be, a migrant and moral drama about what we can do to help others less fortunate; When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, a biopic about a dark time as seen through the eyes of a ten-year-old girl; Transit, a great drama by Christian Petzold with Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski; and Almanya, a family comedy about identity that I reviewed a few weeks ago (here the link). This was an interesting mix of times, stories, perspectives and styles regarding the same topic, migration, sometimes seen from the side of those who arrive to a country, sometimes from the side of those who receive them and sometimes from a confused perspective of those who know neither where they are from nor where they come from. There was thriller, comedy, drama, romance, friendship, a little bit of everything in a very entertaining film series.

La conversación con mis amigos tomó lugar el viernes 30 de Mayo y para ese día había visto 29 películas en el mes. Me pareció demasiado. Era casi una película diaria. Al día siguiente no vi ninguna, pero 29 films (17 de ellos en diferentes salas de cine) en un mes es bastante y aquí quiero compartirles un poco de los títulos que vi y sobre todo cómo me las arreglé para ver tantas cintas. Lo primero que jugó a mi favor fueron los festivales de cine. Durante Mayo se llevaron a cabo tres diferentes ciclos/festivales de cine en la ciudad. El primero de ellos estaba destinado a destacar historias de migración alemana y de todo el ciclo pude ver cinco películas: In the Fade, un thriller político sobre un atentado xenófobo protagonizado por Diane Kruger; Toubab, una divertida comedia que eleva la vara en lo que respecta a lo que estarías dispuesto a hacer por tu mejor amigo; I Was. I Am. I Will Be, un drama migratorio y moral sobre lo que podemos hacer para ayudar a otros menos favorecidos; When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, una película biográfica sobre una época oscura, vista a través de los ojos de una niña de diez años; Transit, un gran drama a cargo de Christian Petzold con Paula Beer y Franz Rogowski; y Almanya, una comedia familiar sobre la identidad que ya reseñé hace algunas semanas (acá el link). Esta fue una mezcla interesante de épocas, relatos, perspectivas y estilos respecto a un mismo tema, la migración, a veces vista del lado de los que llegan a un país, a veces del lado de los que los reciben y a veces desde una perspectiva confusa de quienes no saben ni de dónde son ni de dónde vienen. Hubo thriller, comedia, drama, romance, amistad, de todo un poco en un ciclo de cine muy entretenido.

Then the Polish Film Week was held at the Cineteca Nacional and there they exhibited the first works of different Polish directors. From the exhibition I was able to see The Structure of Crystal by Krzysztof Zanussi, a dramatic and philosophical work; Provincial Actors by Agnieszka Holland, which reflects on the artist's commitment to his art in times of censorship; A Generation by Andrzej Wajda, a story of resistance in times of World War II; The Scar by Krzysztof Kieślowski (one of my favorite film directors), a work of political denunciation in difficult times; and the one that impressed me the most - and that I need to see again - The Third Part of the Night by Andrzej Żuławski, a work with apocalyptic overtones, with symbolism, mirrors and doppelgangers that at times reminded me of Bergman and Tarkovsky.

Luego se celebró la Semana del Cine Polaco en la Cineteca Nacional y allí exhibieron las óperas primas de diferentes directores de este país. De la muestra pude ver The Structure of Crystal de Krzysztof Zanussi, obra dramática y filosófica; Provincial Actors de Agnieszka Holland, que reflexiona sobre el compromiso del artista con su arte en tiempos de censura; A Generation de Andrzej Wajda, historia de la resistencia en tiempos de la segunda guerra mundial; The Scar de Krzysztof Kieślowski (uno de mis directores de cine favoritos), obra de denuncia política en tiempos difíciles; y la que más me impresionó - y que necesito volver a ver - The Third Part of the Night de Andrzej Żuławski, una obra de tintes apocalípticos, con simbolismos, espejos y doppelgangers que por momentos me recordó a Bergman y a Tarkovsky.

Then, at the end of the month was the FEMCINE Women's Film Festival where I saw Jasmin Gordon's impressive film debut, The Courageous, a story that explores unconventional motherhood; and the impressive fusion of documentary and fiction called Memories of a Burning Body by Costa Rican Antonella Sudasassi Furniss that explores female sexuality in times of taboos and silences. It's a real gem, you have to see it. I also saw another film at the Festival, but the screening was on June 1st, so I am not including it here. In addition to these three festivals, I attended a Cine Club where the magnificent, gripping and erotic Lust, Caution by Ang Lee (here's my review) and I went to a special screening of the Chilean feature film Donde el cielo toca tierra, a dystopian film directed by Lola Contreras. After the screening we were able to talk with the director and with screenwriter Ricardo Alfonso López. Similar to that conversation was the one we had with French director Romain Goupil, visiting Chile, regarding his documentary about the first days of the war in Ukraine, 2 place de la Victoire, Kyiv. Finally, my visits to movie theaters were completed with the premiere of La plus précieuse des marchandises (link), Michel Hazanavicius' animated gem and Sinners (link), a movie about racism, blues and vampires. Strange combination, isn't it?

Luego, al final del mes se celebró el Festival Cine de Mujeres FEMCINE en donde vi el impresionante debut cinematográfico de Jasmin Gordon, The Courageous, una historia que explora una maternidad poco convencional; y la impresionante fusión de documental y ficción llamada Memorias de un cuerpo que arde de la costarricense Antonella Sudasassi Furniss que explora la sexualidad femenina en tiempos de tabúes y silencios. Es una verdadera joya, tienen que verla. También vi otra película en el Festival, pero la función fue el 01 de Junio, por eso no la incluyo aquí. Adicional a esos tres festivales, asistí a un Cine Club en donde se revisó la magníifica, atrapante y erótica Lust, Caution de Ang Lee (acá mi reseña) y fui a una función especial del largometraje chileno Donde el cielo toca tierra, obra de corte distópico dirigido por Lola Contreras y tras cuya proyección pudimos conversar con la directora y con el guionista Ricardo Alfonso López. Similar a ese conversatorio fue el que sostuvimos con el director francés Romain Goupil,de visita en Chile, respecto a su documental sobre los primeros días de la guerra de Ucrania, 2 place de la Victoire, Kyiv. Finalmente, mis visitas a salas de cine se completaron con el estreno de La plus précieuse des marchandises (link), la joya animada de Michel Hazanavicius y Sinners (link), una película sobre racismo, blues y vampiros (?) Extraña combinación, ¿cierto?

The other films I watched at home. L'événement (link), an adaptation of a book by Annie Ernaux, Nobel Prize in Literature, in which she recounts her personal experience with abortion at a time and in a country where it was illegal; Sweat, a Polish-language drama about the harsh reality behind the perfect facade of a fitness influencer; Free Chol Soo Lee, a documentary about a man imprisoned for years for a crime he did not commit; the romantic comedy Watching the Detectives (link) with the most unexpected lead couple; My Old Ass, funny and thoughtful story about the value of living in the present moment and which - I confess - I watched for the sole reason that Aubrey Plaza was in it.

Los demás títulos los vi en casa. L'événement (link), adaptación de un libro de Annie Ernaux, Premio Nobel de Literatura, en donde cuenta su experiencia personal con el aborto en una época y un país en que era ilegal; Sweat, drama en polaco sobre la dura realidad detrás de la fachada perfecta de una influencer del fitness; Free Chol Soo Lee, un documental sobre un hombre encarcelado durante años por un crimen que no cometió; la comedia romántica Watching the Detectives (link) con la pareja protagónica más inesperada; My Old Ass, divertida y reflexiva historia sobre el valor de vivir el momento presente y que - lo confieso - vi por la única razón de que aparecía Aubrey Plaza.

I also saw the first two films of the great Terrence Malik, Badlands, with a very young Martin Sheen, and Days of Heaven with a young Richard Gere. I liked both stories very much, the direction, photography and performances, as well as the characters, complex and dramatic, everything was very well done and I can imagine what it must have been like for the public that twenty year silence that Malik went into after these two incredible films. Finally, I also saw a documentary that has me somewhat obsessed, Searching For Sugar Man, (link) and that I need everyone to see because it tells a true story that trumps any fiction; and I close the report with one of the best made trilogies in the history of cinema, the so-called Dollar Trilogy or The Man with No Name Trilogy by Sergio Leone, with Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and the iconic soundtrack by the immortal Ennio Morricone: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and the mythical The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It's one of the few trilogies that achieves the impossible: that the second film is better than the first and that the third is even better than the second. And that concludes my list of the 29 movies seen in May. Drama, romance, comedy, documentaries, thrillers, animated films, classic, European, Latin American, westerns, independent cinema, visits to movie theaters, festivals, film clubs, streaming... quite a complete and varied experience, how many and which of these stories do you know? which ones would you like to see? También vi las dos primeras películas del gran Terrence Malik, Badlands, con un jovencísimo Martin Sheen, y Days of Heaven con un también joven Richard Gere. Ambas historias me gustaron bastante, la dirección, fotografía y actuaciones, además de los personajes, complejos y dramáticos, todo estuvo muy bien hecho y me imagino lo que debió ser para el público ese silencio de veinte años en el que entró Malik después de estas dos increíbles películas. Finalmente, también vi un documental que me tiene algo obsesionado, Searching For Sugar Man, (link) y que necesito que todo el mundo vea porque cuenta una historia real que supera cualquier ficción; y cierro el reporte con una de las trilogías mejores hechas de la historia del cine, la llamada Trilogía del dólar o Trilogía del hombre sin nombre de Sergio Leone, con Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef y la icónica banda sonora del inmortal Ennio Morricone: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More y la mítica The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Se trata de una de las pocas trilogías que consigue lo imposible: que la segunda película sea mejor que la primera y que la tercera sea todavía mejor que la segunda. Y con eso termino la lista de las 29 películas vistas en Mayo. Drama, romance, comedia, documentales, thrillers, cine animado, clásico, europeo, latinoamericano, western, cine independiente, visitas a salas de cine, a festivales, a cineclubs, vistas en streaming... una experiencia bastante completa y variada, ¿cuántas y cuáles de estas historias conocen? ¿cuáles les gustaría ver?
