This Friday is Halloween, a highly anticipated date for trick-or-treating children and all horror movie fans alike. While I'm not one of the latter, amidst so many stories that have been disappointing to me, I want to share three films that offer something different and that I think are worth revisiting. I'm not saying they're the best horror films in the history of cinema, but they're definitely ideal for celebrating this holiday.

Este viernes es Halloween, una fecha muy esperada por los niños que salen a pedir dulces a las casas vecinas y también por todos los fanáticos de las películas de terror. Si bien no soy uno de estos últimos, en medio de tantas historias que me han parecido decepcionantes, les quiero compartir tres películas que tienen algo diferente y que creo que vale la pena revisar. No digo que sean las mejores películas de terror de la historia del cine, pero definitivamente son ideales para el propósito de celebrar esta festividad.

Good Boy (2025)

Let's start with a new release. Like every year, around this time, the city's movie theaters are filled with horror films to show. Most of them are classics, well-known films of the genre, but there are also new releases, and amidst yet another installment of The Conjuring and other less-than-attractive options, Good Boy presents itself as an interesting alternative. Ben Leonberg's directorial debut tells the story of Indy, a faithful and obedient dog who moves with his owner Todd to a house in the countryside after recovering from rehabilitation that has left him quite ill. Despite his sister's pleas to stay close, Todd decides to move away and occupy the house that belonged to his grandfather, who died in mysterious circumstances. From the perspective of the elements that make up the story, Good Boy isn't very original. The abandoned house, homemade videotapes, dark basements, supernatural presences, borderline insanity, failing lights, strange behavior, repeating tragedies... all these genre clichés are present in a film whose charm focuses elsewhere. The hook of Good Boy is that the protagonist isn't Todd, but Indy; so much so that we never clearly see the owner's face. Even the other humans who appear only do so briefly and mostly in shots that avoid giving them prominence: it's all about Indy, trying to protect Todd from the evil that stalks him and that only the dog seems to be able to see.

Empecemos con un estreno. Como cada año, por estas fechas los cines de la ciudad se llenan de películas de terror para proyectar. En su mayoría son clásicos, películas reconocidas del género, pero también hay estrenos y en medio de una entrega más de El Conjuro y otras opciones poco atractivas, Good Boy se presenta como una alternativa interesante. El debut como director de Ben Leonberg nos muestra a Indy, un perro fiel y obediente que se muda junto a su dueño Todd a una casa en el campo luego de recuperarse de una rehabilitación que lo tiene bastante enfermo. A pesar de las peticiones de su hermana de que se mantenga cerca, Todd decide alejarse y ocupar la casa que era de su abuelo, muerto en extrañas circunstancias. Desde el punto de vista de los elementos que conforman la historia, Good Boy no es muy original. La casa abandonada, cintas caseras de video, sótanos oscuros, presencias sobrenaturales, el límite de la locura, luces que fallan, comportamientos extraños, tragedias que se repiten... todos esos clichés del género están presentes en una película cuyo encanto se enfoca en otro lado. El gancho de Good Boy es que el protagonista no es Todd, sino Indy; a tal punto que nunca vemos claramente el rostro del dueño. Incluso los demás humanos que aparecen sólo lo hacen brevemente y en su mayoría en tomas que evitan darles protagonismo: it's all about Indy tratando de proteger a Todd de esa maldad que lo acecha y que sólo el perro parece ser capaz de ver.

The film isn't a POV shot from Indy's eyes, but the shots are taken closer to the ground, from the height of a pet, which makes us wonder: can we talk about animal acting? Do dogs dream? Can they really perceive things we don't? Is it possible that what Indy sees isn't there and is just his hallucinations? Can dogs experience psychosis? And all these questions arise because Indy is convincing in almost every one of his scenes. Good Boy is not a horror masterpiece, but at least it shows something different from most and that's why it's worth checking out, especially if you have a pet dog; it's not for nothing that it grossed over seven million dollars at the box office, about ten times its budget. How much will Indy receive in royalties?

La película no es una POV desde los ojos de Indy, pero las tomas están hechas más cerca del suelo, desde la altura de una mascota que nos hace preguntarnos ¿se puede hablar de actuación animal? ¿los perros sueñan? ¿en verdad pueden percibir cosas que nosotros no? ¿sería posible que lo que Indy ve no esté allí y que sólo sean alucinaciones suyas? ¿pueden los perros experimentar psicosis? Y todas estas preguntas surgen porque Indy resulta convincente en casi todas sus escenas. Good Boy no es una obra maestra de terror, pero al menos muestra algo distinto a la mayoría y ya por eso vale la pena revisarla, especialmente si tienes un perro como mascota; no por nada ha recaudado más de siete millones de dólares en taquilla, unas diez veces su presupuesto, ¿cuánto recibirá Indy en regalías?

Now, let's go back twenty years, when Thailand surprised me and the world with this film. A couple of years after the Western version of The Ring came Shutter, a supernatural horror film that went viral and gave more than a few people nightmares. I must admit that it impressed me quite a bit, and to this day I consider it one of the best horror films I've ever seen. The story begins with a couple who, in the middle of the night, on a highway outside the city, run over someone they can't see properly. Was it a real person? Or was it something more sinister? Terrified by the consequences it could have on their lives, the couple decides to flee and soon find themselves back in their Bangkok routine. However, little by little, strange things begin to happen, and the woman begins to have nightmares. Meanwhile, the man, a professional photographer, begins to see strange figures in his photographs: shadows, specters, ghosts... things that shouldn't be there. And then when some of the people close to them begin to die, the couple - terrified - feels drawn into a dangerous story of revenge that the woman has no idea about... but the man does, because a long time ago the photographer was part of a despicable act against a girl... Little by little, through flashbacks, we learn about everything that happened while we see how a ghostly presence begins to surround the life of this man until there's no escape.

Ahora vamos veinte años atrás, cuando Tailandia me sorprendió a mí y al mundo con esta película. Un par de años después de la versión occidental de The Ring apareció Shutter, una cinta de terror sobrenatural que dio al vuelta al mundo y que le ocasionó pesadillas a más de uno. Debo reconocer que a mí me impresionó bastante y hasta la fecha me parece una de las mejores películas de terror que he visto. La historia inicia con una pareja que en medio de la noche, en una carretera a las afueras de la ciudad, atropellan a alguien a quien no pueden ver bien, ¿era una persona real? ¿o acaso era algo más siniestro? Atemorizados por las consecuencias que pueda traer para sus vidas, la pareja decide huir y pronto se meten de nuevo en su rutina en Bangkok. Sin embargo, poco a poco, comienzan a ocurrir cosas extrañas y la mujer comienza a tener pesadillas. Por su parte, el hombre, un fotógrafo profesional, comienza a ver algunas extrañas figuras en sus fotografías, sombras, espectros, fantasmas... cosas que no deberían estar allí. Y luego cuando comienzan a morir algunas de las personas cercanas a ellos, la pareja - aterrorizada - se siente arrastrada hacia una peligrosa historia de venganza de la que la mujer no tiene idea... pero el hombre sí, porque mucho tiempo atrás el fotógrafo fue parte de una acción despreciable en contra de una muchacha... poco a poco, a través de flashbacks, nos vamos enterando de todo lo que sucedió mientras vemos cómo una presencia fantasmal comienza a cercar la vida de este hombre hasta que no tiene escapatoria.

Shutter has two or three scenes that will make you jump out of your seat and some very creepy shots, especially for its time. But what I like most about this film is the way it reveals the truth and the final scene. Many horror films end up dissolving into nonsense, while Shutter leaves us with a memorable ending that redefines some of the scenes we'd seen before. Although it was released twenty years ago, if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. I think it's a good choice for Friday night.

Shutter tiene unas dos o tres escenas que te hacen saltan del asiento y algunas tomas muy espeluznantes, sobre todo para la época. Pero lo que más me gusta de esta película es la forma en que va revelando la verdad y la escena final. Muchas cintas de terror terminan por disolverse en cosas sin sentido, mientras que Shutter nos deja un final memorable que resignifica algunas de las escenas que habíamos visto antes. Aunque tenga veinte años de haberse estrenado, si no la han visto, se las recomiendo ampliamente. Creo que es una buena opción para la noche del viernes.

The Babadook (2014)

From Thailand, we head to Australia to talk about another cult classic. The story begins with the grief of a woman who lost her husband and must now raise her son alone, who barely knew his father. Samuel, the boy, is six years old and constantly terrorized by a monster that appears in his nightmares and threatens his life and that of his mother, Amelia. Suddenly, one day, a disturbing storybook appears in the house, giving the film its name: The Babadook. Mother and son have no idea where the book came from, but Samuel is convinced that the Babadook, the monster from the book, is the presence he's been dreaming about. From there, the boy becomes increasingly violent, unpredictable, and uncontrollable, but things get worse when the mother also begins to feel that a sinister presence has taken up residence in their house, intent on harming her and her son. Is there really something there, or is Amelia influenced by her son's attacks? Unlike the other two films in this post, this story includes a child—beings who are more sensitive to certain things—and that gives it a plus. It also uses an innocent element, a children's storybook, to introduce the sinister element, the monster. The story's rhymes are as creepy as they are resonant, and those who were afraid of the dark or their closet as children will want to look under the bed again before going to sleep.

De Tailandia nos vamos a Australia para hablar de otra película de culto. La historia comienza con el duelo de una mujer que perdió a su esposo y ahora debe criar por sí misma a su hijo, quien apenas conoció a su padre. Samuel, el niño, tiene seis años y vive constantemente aterrorizado por un monstruo que se le aparece en sus pesadillas y que amenaza su vida y la de su madre Amelia. De pronto, un día aparece en la casa un inquietante libro de cuentos que da nombre a la película: The Babadook. Madre e hijo no tienen idea de dónde salió el libro, pero Samuel está convencido de que el Babadook, el monstruo del libro, es la presencia con la que ha estado soñando. A partir de allí, el niño se torna más y más violento, impredecible e incontrolable, pero todo empeora cuando la madre comienza a sentir también que una presencia siniestra se ha instalado en su casa para hacerles daño a ella y a su hijo, ¿en verdad hay algo allí o Amelia está sugestionada por los ataques de su hijo? A diferencia de las otras dos películas de este post, esta historia incluye a un niño - seres más sensibles a ciertas cosas - y eso le da un plus y además emplea un elemento inocente, un libro infantil de cuentos, para introducir el elemento siniestro, el monstruo. Las rimas del cuento son tan creepys como sonoras y aquellos que hayan tenido miedo de la oscuridad o de su armario en la infancia van a querer volver a mirar debajo de la cama antes de acostarse.

But just like with Shutter, what I like most about The Babadook is its ending, because it reveals an element that makes you reinterpret what you've seen up until then. When you finish watching The Babadook, several hypotheses begin to parade through your mind, and there's only one way to choose one of them: watch the film again. With its mix of threatened childhood, motherhood, monsters, grief, psychological thriller, and a spectral presence, Jennifer Kent's fourth film has become a cult film that continues to gain fans around the world. If you want to see it, it's currently available for streaming on MUBI.

Pero al igual que con Shutter, lo que más me gusta de The Babadook es su final porque revela un elemento que te hace resignificar lo que habías visto hasta entonces. Cuando terminas de ver The Babadook, varias hipótesis comienzan a desfilar por tu mente y sólo hay una forma de elegir alguna de ellas: volver a ver la película. Con esa mezcla de infancia amenazada, maternidad, monstruos, duelo, thriller psicológico y una presencia espectral, la cuarta película de Jennifer Kent se convirtió en una película de culto que sigue sumando fanáticos alrededor del mundo.
