As I mentioned last week, in 2025 I watched the absurd number of 205 movies and since I usually review two or three each week, I don't have enough posts to talk about all the films I've seen, so this 3 x 1 space that started as a way to talk about movies related in some way, has now become a personal necessity and with so many movies that I watch, now it's easy for me to find some theme or common element in at least three of those stories.

Tal como les comenté la semana pasada, en el 2025 vi la absurda cantidad de 205 películas y como suelo reseñar dos o tres cada semana, no me alcanzan las publicaciones para hablar de todos los films que he visto, así que este espacio de 3 x 1 que surgió como una forma de hablar sobre películas relacionadas de alguna forma, ahora se ha convertido en una necesidad personal y con tantas películas que veo, se me hace fácil encontrar algún tema o elemento común en al menos tres de las historias.

Anyone But You (2023)

Almost everyone has seen this movie. It was in theaters for a long time and was a Netflix favorite thanks to its very attractive lead actors, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, and the fact that it's a romantic comedy with elements that viewers tend to enjoy. It's no wonder the film grossed almost ten times its production cost, and a central song in the film, "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield, returned to the top of the charts twenty years after its initial release. Directed by Will Gluck and written by him and Ilana Wolpert, loosely based on William Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing," the film tells the story of Bea and Ben, a couple who meet by chance in a coffee shop and seem to be the perfect match for an afternoon and an evening. However, after that incredible first date and a couple of misunderstandings, they separate without explanation. Months later, they cross paths again—because it's a small world, and because, well, that's how these screenplays go—at a wedding involving people important to them: Bea's sister and a close friend of Ben's. Invited to celebrate the nuptials in Australia, they are forced to share the same space once more. Ben's ex-girlfriend will also be at the wedding. And Bea's parents keep going on about how great it would be if she got back together with her ex-boyfriend. To silence them all, the protagonists decide to pretend they're a couple in love.

Seguramente esta película la han visto todos. Estuvo mucho tiempo en carteleras y fue una de las favoritas en Netflix gracias a una pareja de protagonistas muy atractivos, Sydney Sweeney y Glen Powell, y al hecho de ser una comedia romántica con algunos elementos que los espectadores suelen disfrutar mucho. No en balde la película recaudó casi diez veces lo que había costado hacerla y una canción central en el film, Unwritten de Natasha Bedingfield, volvió a llegar al tope de las carteleras después de veinte años de haberse estrenado. Dirigida por Will Gluck y escrita por él junto a Ilana Wolpert, basándose libremente en la obra Mucho ruido y pocas nueces de William Shakespeare, la película cuenta la historia de Bea y Ben, una pareja que se conoce de casualidad en una cafetería y que parecen ser la pareja perfecta durante una tarde y una noche, pero que tras esa increíble primera cita y un par de malentendidos, se separan sin explicación. Meses más tarde vuelven a toparse - porque el mundo es un pañuelo y porque, bueno, así son estos guiones - con motivo de una boda que involucra a personas importantes para ellos: la hermana de Bea y una amiga cercana de Ben. Invitados, ambos, a celebrar las nupcias en Australia, se ven obligados a compartir nuevamente. En la boda también estará la ex novia de Ben; y los padres de Bea no dejan de hablar de lo bueno que sería que ella volviera con su ex novio. Anyone But You is a sort of enemies-to-lovers story—much like Shakespeare's comedy—featuring misunderstandings, romances, absurd and funny situations, and a huge number of clichés: love advice, sarcastic flirting, a wedding, and a happy ending. Powell and Sweeney's performances are fine, but the script isn't all that great. Of course, if you enjoy romantic comedies to pass the time, this one has everything you need.

Anyone But You es una especie de enemies to lovers - como también lo es la comedia de Shakespeare - en la que se presentan malos entendidos, romances, situaciones absurdas, graciosas y una enorme cantidad de clichés: consejos amorosos, coqueteos sarcásticos, una boda y un final feliz. Eddie and Amber also decide to pretend to be in a romantic relationship, but for different reasons. Set in a small town in conservative Ireland in 1995, these teenagers are constantly attacked by their classmates due to homophobia. In Amber's case, the entire school knows her as a lesbian—in a context where that is a condemnation—and in Eddie's case, there are strong suspicions about his homosexuality, but, unlike Amber, he does everything possible to prove that he ain't gay, even if it means kissing a classmate or enrolling in the military academy because of his father's successful past at that institution. Until one day, on the verge of despair, Eddie suggests to Amber the idea of ​​pretending to be a heterosexual couple for the remaining months of high school. It's a matter of putting on a little act in front of others before they can be free. Eddie is a sensitive, confused boy, caught between what he feels and what others expect of him, and his conflict is that he seems to be guided more by the latter, which only brings him more confusion and unhappiness. Amber has a much clearer vision. Her future lies outside of their small town. She, a punk, brave, and feminist girl, wants to graduate and move to London, to a more modern and open society where she won't have to lie about her sexual orientation. Together, they will both learn about the opposite sex, about human relationships, about each other, and above all, about themselves.

Eddie y Amber también deciden fingir ante los demás tener una relación romántica, pero por motivos distintos. Ambientada en una pequeña ciudad de la conservadora Irlanda de 1995, estos adolescentes son atacados constantemente por sus compañeros de clases por motivos de homofobia. En el caso de Amber, todo el colegio la conoce como lesbiana - en un contexto en el que eso es una condena - y en el caso de Eddie, hay fuertes sospechas de su homosexualidad, pero, a diferencia de Amber, el chico hace lo imposible por demostrar que no lo es, aún cuando eso implique tener que besar a una compañera de clases o inscribirse en la academia militar debido al exitoso pasado de su padre en esa institución. Dating Amber, written and directed by David Freyne (director of the recent Eternity, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, Callum Turner, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph), is a romantic comedy, a coming-of-age story, a drama about sexual identity, and a lesson about the importance of having someone who understands and loves you just as you are. The dialogues between the main characters, the supporting characters, the train journeys to Dublin, the staged dates, and many other scenes elicit plenty of laughter from viewers, especially at the beginning of the film, but also manage to bring a tear or two to the eye.

Dating Amber, escrita y dirigida por David Freyne (director de la reciente Eternity, con Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, Callum Turner y Da'Vine Joy Randolph) es una comedia romántica, una historia de crecimiento, un drama sobre identidad sexual y una lección sobre lo importante que es contar con alguien que te entienda y te ame tal como eres. Los diálogos entre los protagonistas, los personajes secundarios, los viajes en tren a Dublín, las citas fingidas y muchas otras escenas logran provocar muchas risas a los espectadores, sobre todo al inicio de la cinta, pero también logran sacar alguna que otra lágrima hacia la segunda mitad.

And of course, we can't discuss this topic without mentioning Olive Penderghast, the queen of faked (sexual) relationships. Played by a young and hilarious Emma Stone, Olive finds herself caught in a dramatic whirlwind of her own making. It all starts with a little white lie to her friend Rhiannon, in which she tells her she lost her virginity to a nonexistent college boyfriend. Invisible to the entire school until then, Olive begins to be noticed, but it's her second lie that ignites the firestorm. Olive has a friend named Brandon, openly attacked by his classmates because of his homosexuality (a bit like Eddie in the previous film), and Brandon asks Olive for help, suggesting she pretend to have sex with him at a party so he can gain the respect of the other boys and they'll stop bullying him. Moved by solidarity, Olive decides to help Brandon, but from then on, her personal hell is unleashed. The same students who congratulate Brandon for what happened condemn Olive for her promiscuity—an obviously sexist attitude—and, led by the president of the school's Christian group, Marianne (Amanda Bynes), they all begin to attack her for something she didn't do. Far from becoming withdrawn or becoming invisible again, Olive decides to attack head-on and look and behave as others believe she is, and takes advantage of the reading in class of a classic novel, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, to send her message.

Y claro, no podemos tocar este tema y no hablar de Olive Penderghast, la reina de las relaciones (sexuales) fingidas. Interpretada por una joven y divertidísima Emma Stone, Olive se ve atrapada en un torbellino dramático provocado por ella misma. Todo empieza con una pequeña mentira a su amiga Rhiannon en donde le cuenta que perdió su virginidad con un novio universitario inexistente. Invisible para toda la escuela hasta entonces, a partir de allí Olive comienza a ser notada, pero es su segunda mentira la que provoca el incendio. Olive tiene un amigo llamado Brandon, abiertamente atacado por sus compañeros debido a su homosexualidad (un poco como Eddie en la película anterior) y Brandon le pide a Olive que lo ayude, que finja tener relaciones sexuales con él durante una fiesta para de esa forma ganarse el respeto de los demás chicos y que dejen de acosarlo. Movida por la solidaridad, Olive decide ayudar a Brandon, pero a partir de entonces se desata su infierno personal. Easy A is probably my favorite teen comedy. Her portrayal of Olive is what made me fall in love with Emma Stone, whom I found funny and brilliant. But we also have a script that works well, impeccable Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as Olive's parents (my favorite parents on the big screen), a catchy song (interestingly, also by Natasha Bedingfield), the center of an iconic scene, and the company of other talents like Lisa Kudrow from Friends and Penn Badgley from the series You.

Easy A probablemente sea mi comedia estudiantil favorita. Su interpretación de Olive fue lo que me hizo enamorarme de una Emma Stone que encontré divertida y brillante. Furthermore, since its release in 2010, Easy A has continued to captivate viewers who have discovered it on streaming services. And if you're one of them and you enjoy stories about fake relationships, you've probably also heard of Just Go with It, where Adam Sandler pretends to have a family with Jennifer Aniston to maintain a lie he told his new girlfriend, Brooklyn Decker (Nicole Kidman and Dave Matthews also appear in the film). You should also know about How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a classic romantic comedy where Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey pretend to be in love with each other for personal gain, and despite its countless clichés, it's a story that's quite enjoyable. Now, if you're looking for something more dramatic, the only thing that comes to mind is the German film Es gilt das gesprochene Wort (I Was, I Am, I Will Be), where a Kurdish gigolo and a German pilot recently diagnosed with cancer decide to fake a romantic relationship due to immigration issues. Two best friends also find themselves in a similar situation in Toubab, a German comedy where two heterosexual men pretend to be in a homosexual relationship to avoid deportation. Sólo pude recordar esas, pero de seguro que hay más, ¿qué otras historias recuerdan en donde existan relaciones amorosas fingidas? Los leo en los comentarios.
