I wasn't dying to see this movie, but I was quite curious. I mean, Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell together on the big screen? It could be a really good idea or a really bad one, but eye-catching either way. So, without knowing much about the plot except that it was a romance, I went to the cinema a few days after its release to see A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, and in the end, I was left with a feeling of dissatisfaction, but perhaps for a different reason than I thought.

No me moría por ver esta película pero sí tenía bastante curiosidad. Es decir, ¿Margot Robbie y Colin Farrell juntos en la gran pantalla? Podía ser una muy buena o una muy mala idea, pero llamativa en cualquier caso, así que sin saber mucho de la trama excepto que era una historia romántica me fui al cine unos días después de su estreno para ver A Big Bold Beautiful Journey y al final quedé con una sensación de insatisfacción, pero quizás por una razón diferente a la que podía haber previsto.

The film opens with David (Farrell), a middle-aged man who has been living and traveling alone for several years, on his way to a friend's wedding. Due to an unforeseen circumstance, he's forced to rent a car from a peculiar agency that seems to deal with more than just automobiles. I won't give away too much, but David arrives at his friends' wedding and there meets Sarah (Robbie), a very attractive, also single woman, to whom he feels drawn but—whether due to insecurity, his past traumas, or some other reason—he lets her go without trying to win her over. However, as is almost always the case in these kinds of movies, but rarely in real life, the couple meets again the next day in a truly fantastical situation, and the journey of the title begins. Although I don't want to give away any spoilers, I should mention a few things. First, the film is very fantastical, and if you scrutinize the coherence of some sequences, the experience can be unpleasant. I think the best approach is to just go with the flow without overthinking things and only make any evaluation or judgment at the end. At least, that's what I tried to do, and I found it has some enjoyable moments. During their journey together, David and Sarah encounter doors they must pass through. These aren't just any doors. They are specific doors that will lead them to relive important moments from their respective pasts, so in that sense, the film also incorporates the element of time travel. Fantasy, romance, and time travel? Yes, all of that, with a touch of musical, a lot of road movie, and a bit of comedy (too much?).

La película inicia con David (Farrell) un hombre de mediana edad que lleva varios años viviendo y viajando solo y que se dirige a la boda de unos amigos. Debido a un imprevisto se ve obligado a rentar un auto en una curiosa agencia que parece tener que ver más con otras cosas que con automóviles. No daré muchos detalles, pero lo cierto es que David llega a la boda de sus amigos y allí conoce a Sarah (Robbie) una mujer muy atractiva, también soltera, hacia quien se siente atraído pero - por inseguridad, por sus heridas o alguna otra razón - la deja ir sin intentar conquistarla. Sin embargo, como sucede siempre en casi todas estas películas, pero casi nunca en la vida real, la pareja se vuelve a encontrar al día siguiente en medio de una situación realmente fantástica y el viaje del título comienza. Aunque no quiero hacer spoilers, debo mencionar algunas cosas. Primero que la película tiene mucha fantasía y si se pone la lupa en la coherencia de algunas secuencias la experiencia puede ser desagradable; creo que lo mejor es dejarse llevar sin pensar mucho las cosas y hacer alguna evaluación o juicio solamente al final, al menos eso intenté hacer y encontré que tiene algunos pasajes disfrutables. Durante ese viaje que emprenden juntos, David y Sarah se van encontrando puertas que deben atravesar. No son puertas cualesquiera. Son ciertas puertas que los llevarán a revivir juntos algunos momentos importantes de sus respectivos pasados, así que en ese sentido la película también tiene el elemento de los viajes en el tiempo, ¿fantasía, romance y viajes en el tiempo? Si, todo eso, con una pizca de musical, mucho de road movie y algo de comedia (?).

Seeing the doors the couple kept encountering in the middle of nowhere, my first thought brought to mind certain Asian legends, mainly Japanese, and stories in which doors or portals play a crucial role. One of them, perhaps the most recent for me, is Makoto Shinkai's film Suzume no Tojimari, although there the doors served a different purpose, and in my opinion, the script and the use of that element are more effective.

Al ver las puertas que la pareja se va encontrando en medio de la nada, mi primer pensamiento me llevó a recordar ciertas leyendas orientales, principalmente japonesas, e historias en las que las puertas o los portales juegan un papel decisivo. Una de ellas, quizás la más reciente para mí, es la película Suzume no tojimari de Makoto Shinkai, aunque allí las puertas cumplían una función diferente y en mi opinión hay mayor solidez en el guion y en el aprovechamiento de ese recurso.

After making that connection, I felt that perhaps the film was some kind of remake of an Asian story, or that maybe the screenwriter was a writer from China or Japan. Then I learned that the film's director was Kogonada, the professional name of Korean filmmaker Park Joong-eun, and I thought, "That must be it," but I kept reading and found out that he only directed it, he didn't write it. The screenwriter of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is Seth Reiss, who co-wrote the screenplay for The Menu with Will Tracy. At that point, I felt a little lost. The film is an Irish-US co-production that incorporates some Asian mythological elements, with a Korean director who didn't write it and a screenwriter with little film experience who dared to mix fantasy with romance in a story starring two DC villains, Harley Quinn and The Penguin... that's what I found truly bold about the film. Some landscapes are beautiful, certain lines are thought-provoking, and I also enjoyed seeing Phoebe Waller-Bridge briefly in a role that seemed tailor-made for her, but beyond these small successes, I felt the film was primarily a series of flaws, one of the most glaring being the lack of chemistry between Robbie and Farrell. Both are tremendous actors, I don't question that, and their individual scenes were good, but that love, that magic that should exist and be felt between David and Sarah, well, I didn't feel it.

Después de haber hecho esa asociación sentí que tal vez la película fuera una especie de remake de una historia asiática o que tal vez el guionista podía ser un escritor de China o de Japón. Luego me enteré de que el director de la película era Kogonada, nombre profesional del cineasta coreano Park Joong Eun y dije "Debe ser por eso", pero seguí leyendo y encontré que él sólo la dirigió, no la escribió. El guionista de A Big Bold Beautiful Journey es Seth Reiss quien co escribió el guion de The Menu junto a Will Tracy. En ese punto me sentí un poco perdido. La película es una co producción entre Irlanda y EEUU que utiliza algunos elementos mitológicos orientales, con un director Coreano que no la escribió y un guionista sin mucha experiencia en cine que se atrevió a mezclar fantasía con romance en una historia protagonizada por dos villanos de DC, Harley Queen y The Penguin... eso me pareció lo realmente Bold (Atrevido) de la cinta. Algunos paisajes son hermosos, ciertas frases dan qué pensar y también me gustó ver brevemente a Phoebe Waller-Bridge en un papel que me pareció hecho a su medida, pero más allá de estos pequeños aciertos, sentí que la película fue principalmente una serie de fallas dentro de las cuales una de las más evidentes es la falta de química entre Robbie y Farrell. Ambos son tremendos actores, no cuestiono eso, y sus escenas individuales me parecieron buenas, pero ese amor, esa magia que debe surgir y sentirse entre David y Sarah, bueno, yo no la sentí.

Then there's the fantasy element. The doors and revisiting the past through them is a visually striking way to go to therapy. Because that's what David and Sarah do: confront the scenes from their past that scarred them and turned them into the broken beings they feel they are. But I'm not sure if those time-traveling adventures were the best way to do it. I have nothing against films that incorporate fantasy along with romance (Big Fish, for example, is very good), but in the geographical and biographical context of the story and these characters, it felt a bit forced, almost unnatural.

Luego tenemos el tema de la fantasía. Las puertas y el revisitar el pasado a través de ellas es una forma vistosa de ir a terapia. Porque eso es lo que hacen David y Sarah: confrontarse a las escenas del pasado que los marcaron y que los convirtieron en estos seres rotos que sienten ser. Pero no sé si esos viajes en el tiempo eran la mejor forma de hacerlo. No tengo nada en contra de las películas que incorporan la fantasía junto con el romance (Big Fish, por ejemplo, me parece muy buena) pero en el contexto geográfico y biográfico de la historia y de estos personajes lo sentí un poco forzado, como muy poco natural.

However, my biggest disappointment wasn't any of these things, but seeing the director's name in the credits. For me, seeing Kogonada is a mark of quality, ever since I first saw Columbus, a gem from both a narrative and directorial standpoint. In fact, I think if I had known that A Big Bold Beautiful Journey was directed by him, I would have gone to see it much sooner, but at the same time, I think I would have had higher expectations, and therefore the disappointment would have been greater. Now, I'm not going to say the film is a disaster because that would be an exaggeration. There are certain lines and scenes that prompt reflection, and it has some visual aspects that are enjoyable (pay attention to the color of the clothes the characters wear in each scene); the best thing, I think, is the soundtrack. Mitski's version of Pete Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door" and Laufey's rendition of "The Risk" are two beautiful pieces (there's also a brief excerpt from Bright Eyes' "First Day of My Life"). And of course, there's also the message of communication in relationships, childhood wounds, the fear of loving and being loved, romantic ideals, and other interesting themes that emerge from the situations David and Sarah go through. So, even if the film isn't quite the wonderful journey the title suggests, at least there's the possibility of a good chat over coffee afterward. How many of you have seen it? Would you watch it? Sin embargo, mi mayor decepción no fue ninguna de estas cosas sino ver el nombre del director en los créditos. Para mí leer Kogonada es un sello de calidad desde la primera vez que vi Columbus, una joya desde el punto de vista narrativo y de dirección. De hecho, creo que si hubiera sabido que A Big Bold Beautiful Journey estaba dirigida por él la habría ido a ver mucho antes, pero al mismo tiempo creo que habría tenido más expectativas y por tanto la decepción habría sido mayor. Ahora bien, no voy a decir que la película es un bodrio porque sería exagerar. Hay ciertas frases y escenas que mueven a la reflexión y tiene algunos aspectos visuales que son disfrutables (al verla presten atención al color de la ropa que usan los personajes en cada escena); lo mejor, creo yo, es el soundtrack. La versión que hace Mitski de "Let My Love Open the Door" de Pete Townshend y la canción "The Risk" interpretada por Laufey son dos piezas hermosas (también hay un fragmento breve de "First Day of My Life" de Bright Eyes). Y claro, esta también el mensaje de la comunicación en la pareja, las heridas de la infancia, el miedo a amar y ser amados, los ideales románticos y otros temas interesantes que se desprenden de las situaciones que atraviesan David y Sarah, así que aunque la película no sea un viaje tan maravilloso como el que sugiere el título, al menos hay la posibilidad de una buena charla con un café después de verla, ¿cuántos de ustedes la han visto? ¿la verían?
