I love going to the movies. That is to say, not only do I love cinema as art, but also as an experience. Many may argue that it's more comfortable to watch movies at home, with a blanket and near the refrigerator, but I prefer to go to a movie theater, even if it's an independent theater, and that's why I try to go even a couple of times a month to a screening. It's true that modern movie theaters don't always have titles of interest to me, but even so I'm constantly checking them out.

Amo ir al cine. Es decir, no sólo amo el cine como arte, sino también como experiencia. Muchos podrán alegar que es más cómodo ver películas en casa, con una manta y cerca del refrigerador, pero yo prefiero ir a una sala de cine, aunque sea una sala independiente, y por eso trato de ir aunque sea un par de veces al mes a alguna función. Es cierto las que carteleras de las salas modernas no siempre tienen títulos de mi interés, pero aun así las estoy revisando constantemente.

If I go to the movies by myself, that is to say without company, I prefer to go to movie screenings that I know (or assume) I will enjoy, but if I go in the company of someone else, the movie is the least of it, I go for the experience of sharing with that other person and for going to a theater with a giant screen. I say all this because, as I said before, I'm not a fan of action movies, but thanks to a contest on Instagram I won two tickets to go see Ballerina at the cinema, so I invited a friend and told her: “Do you want to go see Ana de Armas on a giant screen?”. Obviously, she accepted. As many of you may already know, the film is a spin-off of John Wick, a saga starring Keanu Reeves that already has four parts and in which Ballerina comes to be something like a John Wick 3.5 following the timeline. As clarification, disclaimer, or as a curious note - any way you want to take it - I should add that my friend had not seen any of the John Wick movies and I had barely seen the first one (without remembering it much), so we expected that since it's a spin-off there was not so much need to know the plot of the previous parts and the truth is that, in my opinion, it's a story that can be enjoyed (almost) the same without needing to know the whole John Wick universe. The other thing you can do, if you don't want to see the three previous movies, is to look for a summary on YouTube, something my friend did - ironically - the day after going to the movies to see Ballerina. I asked her if she wanted to watch the John Wick movies now, and she said, “No need”.

Si voy al cine por mí mismo, es decir sin compañía, prefiero acudir a funciones de películas que sé (o supongo) que voy a disfrutar, pero si voy en compañía de alguien más, la película es lo de menos, voy por la experiencia de compartir con esa otra persona y por acudir a una sala con una pantalla gigante. Digo todo esto porque, como he dicho antes, no soy fanático de las películas de acción, pero gracias a un concurso en Instagram me gané dos entradas para ir a ver Ballerina al cine, así que invité a una amiga y le dije: "¿Quieres ir a ver a Ana de Armas en pantalla gigante?". Obviamente, aceptó. Como muchos de ustedes ya sabrán, la película es un spin-off de John Wick, saga protagonizada por Keanu Reeves que ya cuenta con cuatro partes y en la que Ballerina viene a ser algo así como una John Wick 3.5 siguiendo la línea temporal. Como aclaratoria, disclaimer, o como nota curiosa - de cualquier manera que lo queiran tomar - debo agregar que mi amiga no había visto ninguna de las películas de John Wick y yo apenas había visto la primera (sin recordarla mucho), así que esperábamos que por tratarse de un spin-off no hubiera tanta necesidad de conocer la trama de las partes anteriores y la verdad es que, en mi opinión, es una historia que se puede disfrutar (casi) igual sin necesidad de conocer todo el universo de John Wick. Lo otro que pueden hacer, si no quieren ver las tres películas previas, es buscar un resumen en YouTube, algo que mi amiga hizo - irónicamente - al día siguiente de haber ido al cine a ver Ballerina. Le pregunté si ahora quería ver las películas de John Wick y me dijo: "No hace falta".

In one line, this is a story of revenge. Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) is an assassin trained by the Ruska Roma, an organization that somehow protects certain people through the assignment of caretakers, among them Eve. This organization is the same one that trained John Wick (hence the main connection between the characters) and has certain rules and protocols to comply with, especially with regard to other similar organizations with whom it shares the market.

En una línea, esta es una historia de venganza. Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) es una asesina entrenada por la Ruska Roma, una organización que de alguna forma protege a ciertas personas a través de la asignación de cuidadores, entre los que se cuenta Eve. Esta organización es la misma que adiestró a John Wick (de allí viene la conexión principal entre los personajes) y tiene ciertas reglas y protocolos que cumplir, sobre todo en lo referente a otras organizaciones similares con quienes comparte el mercado.

But as in thousands of movies that have been released before this one, Eve discovers that one of those untouchable organizations for her is responsible for the death of her father - murdered in front of her eyes when she was a child - and decides to carry out her revenge, ignoring the prohibitions of her superiors who then decide to hunt her down as well. That plot, or at least that core, we've seen it a million times. A hero (or anti-hero) pitted against the world for a personal issue or for the fulfillment of some noble mission (in Ballerina there's some of that too) and who makes use of all his resources and fighting skills to try to annihilate a powerful organization. What is not so common in this case is that the thirst for revenge comes from a woman (no, she's not the first, but there are not so many either) and also that she's a very skilled woman, yes, with firearms, bladed weapons, hand-to-hand combat, but petite and - in appearance - with not too much strength. Beatrix Kiddo, Uma Thurman's character in Kill Bill, another of the most memorable revenge stories starring a woman, is just over six feet tall. Ana de Armas, on the other hand, is 5'6", which doesn't really make her a short woman, but it does put her at a disadvantage compared to her enemies, most of whom are tall, muscular men. And in the face of such a challenge, as she was taught, Eve fights like a girl, that is, taking advantage of her agility, her speed, her strength and, above all, her surroundings.

Pero como en miles de películas que se han estrenado antes de esta, Eve descubre que una de esas organizaciones intocables para ella es la responsable de la muerte de su padre - asesinado frente a sus ojos cuando era niña - y decide llevar a cabo su venganza, pasando por alto las prohibiciones de sus superiores quienes luego deciden también darle caza. Esa trama, o al menos ese núcleo, lo hemos visto un millón de veces. Un héroe (o antihéroe) enfrentado contra el mundo por un tema personal o por el cumplimiento de alguna noble misión (en Ballerina hay algo de eso también) y que hace uso de todos sus recursos y habilidades de pelea para intentar aniquilar a una poderosa organización. Lo no tan común en este caso es que la sed de venganza viene de una mujer (no, no es la primera, pero tampoco hay tantas) y además que se trata de una mujer muy habilidosa, sí, con armas de fuego, armas blancas, combate cuerpo a cuerpo, pero menuda y - en apariencia - con no demasiada fuerza. Beatrix Kiddo, el personaje de Uma Thurman en Kill Bill, otra de las historias de venganza más memorables protagonizada por una mujer, mide poco más de un metro ochenta. En cambio, Ana de Armas mide 1,68 lo que no la hace una mujer bajita realmente, pero sí la pone en desventaja con respecto a sus enemigos, hombres altos y musculosos en su mayoría. Y ante tal desafío, tal como se le fue enseñado, Eve pelea como una chica, es decir aprovechando las ventajas que puede sacar de su agilidad, su velocidad, su fuerza y sobre todo, de su entorno.

If we stop to analyze the plot of Ballerina, we will find some flaws and weak points, but it's normal in this kind of productions where the action by itself is more important than the complexity of the plot. I would say that everything goes pretty well until she decides to go to a small town located in the middle of a winter mountain, when you see the movie you will know what I'm talking about. Up to there, the story is pretty acceptable, but once there she has a couple of encounters and some things are revealed that certainly represent a setback in the upward pace of the film's vibe.

Si nos detenemos a analizar la trama de Ballerina, vamos a encontrar algunas fallas y puntos débiles, pero es normal en este tipo de producciones en las que prima la acción por sí misma más que la complejidad de la trama. Yo diría que todo va bastante bien hasta que ella decide ir a un pueblito ubicado en medio de una montaña invernal, cuando vean la película sabrán de qué les hablo. Hasta allí, la historia es bastante aceptable, pero una vez allí tiene un par de encuentros y se revelan algunas cosas que sin duda representan un retroceso en el ritmo ascendente de la vibra de la película.

However, those plot slips aside, Ballerina is a good action movie because it has action. A lot of action. And very good sequences, to boot. Eve's character deftly handles a lot of weaponry, firearms, bladed weapons, grenades, even the most everyday items - like some ice skates - are lethal weapons in her hands. In addition, the action sequences are very well choreographed and due to her build, Eve uses intelligent resources, not very common, in each of her battles. There were several times that, watching her face several of her pursuers, I said to myself “I haven't seen that before”, which is not easy to achieve in such an exploited genre. There are also some scenes of extreme, very graphic violence, after which I either opened my eyes wide or closed them flat (funny how two opposite reactions to the same stimulus can occur), but at no point did I feel bored or tedious. Yes, like all films of this type, Ballerina is somewhat exaggerated, excessive in the amount of bullets spent, explosions, or killed, but unlike others I've seen, I think it keeps the pace very high during most of the film and despite her build and the sweetness of her face, Ana de Armas turns out to be a very effective assassin and creates in Eve a very good character, strong, tough, far from other performances I've seen, which shows her talent and her wide acting range, have any of you already seen this movie? Sin embargo, dejando de lado esos deslices argumentales, Ballerina es una buena película de acción porque tiene acción. Mucha acción. Y muy buenas secuencias, además. El personaje de Eve maneja con destreza una gran cantidad de armamento, armas de fuego, armas blancas, granadas, incluso los elementos más cotidianos - como unos patines sobre hielo - son armas letales en sus manos. Además, las secuencias de acción están muy bien coreografiadas y debido a su contextura, Eve utiliza recursos inteligentes, no muy comunes, en cada una de sus batallas. Fueron varias las veces que, viéndola enfrentarse a varios de sus perseguidores, me dije "Yo no había visto eso antes", lo cual no es fácil de conseguir, tratándose de un género tan explotado. También hay algunas escenas de una violencia extrema, muy gráfica, tras las cuales abrí mucho los ojos o los cerré de plano (curioso cómo pueden darse dos reacciones opuestas ante el mismo estímulo), pero en ningún momento me sentí aburrido o con tedio. Sí, como todas las películas de este tipo, Ballerina resulta algo exagerada, desmedida en la cantidad de balas gastadas, explosiones, o asesinados, pero a diferencia de otras que he visto, creo que mantiene el ritmo muy alto durante la mayor parte de la película y a pesar de su contextura y de la dulzura de su rostro, Ana de Armas resulta una asesina bastante efectiva y crea en Eve un personaje bastante bueno, fuerte, aguerrido, lejos de otras actuaciones que le he visto, lo que demuestra su talento y su amplio rango actoral, ¿alguno de ustedes ya fue a ver esta película? ¿Qué les pareció?
