Barbarian is a film written and directed by Zach Cregger and starring Georgina Campbell alongside Bill Skarsgård and Justin Long. I hadn't seen Long on screen for a long time (I remember one of the first times I saw him was in He's just not that into you) and I was curious now to see Bill, who played Pennywise in It, on the other side of a horror story, that is, on the side of the victims. Barbarian is classified as a horror thriller and the story can be summed up more or less like this: Tess (Campbell) is a young woman who arrives in Detroit and rents a house through Airbnb since she has a job interview the next morning. The first problem she faces is that when she arrives at the house it is occupied by another person who also rented it, Keith (Skarsgård). The circumstances are strange. In addition, she's a woman traveling alone and Keith is a man who's alone in that house. Faced with the impossibility of finding accommodation elsewhere since an important convention is taking place in the city (convenient for the plot, but somewhat forced), Tess decides to spend the night in the house and gets to know Keith a little and gain confidence in him. She takes the bedroom and he sleeps on the couch. And so the night passes, almost without any problem.

Barbarian es una película escrita y dirigida por Zach Cregger y protagonizada por Georgina Campbell junto a Bill Skarsgård y Justin Long. Tenía mucho tiempo sin ver a Long en pantalla (recuerdo que una de las primeras veces que lo vi fue en He's just not that into you) y me causó curiosidad ver ahora a Bill, quien interpretó a Pennywise en It, del otro lado de una historia de terror, es decir, del lado de las vítimas. Barbarian está catalogada como un thriller de terror y la historia se resume más o menos así: Tess (Campbell) es una joven que llega a Detroit y renta una casa por Airbnb ya que tiene una entrevista de trabajo al día siguiente. El primer problema al que se enfrenta es que al llegar a la casa la misma está ocupada por otra persona que también la rentó, Keith (Skarsgård). las circunstancias son extrañas. Además ella es una mujer que viaja sola y Keith es un hombre que se encuentra solo en esa casa. Ante la imposibilidad de encotnrar alojamiento en otro lugar ya que en la ciudad se realiza una convención importante (conveniente para la trama, pero algo forzado), Tess decide pasar la noche en la casa y llega a conocer un poco a Keith y a tomarle confianza. Ella toma el dormitorio y él duerme en el sofá. Y así pasa la noche, casi sin ningún problema.

Because the truth is that strange things begin to happen, noises, doors that open, presences that are felt and Tess realizes that the least she had to fear was the noble Keith who at first finds it hard to believe what Tess tells her about what she discovered in the basement.

Porque la verdad es que comienzan a suceder cosas extrañas, ruidos, puertas que se abren, presencias que se sienten y Tess se da cuenta de que lo menos que tenía que temer era al noble Keith quien al principio le cuesta creer lo que Tess le cuenta que descubrió en el sótano.

And yes, there is also a basement. And a hidden room. And a tunnel... they're not new elements (the truth is that they are quite used tricks) but I liked the way the script moved forward in this part of the film. You feel the tension and the intrigue of knowing how the hell is that there and especially why. So far the mix of the film is not very original, but I must admit that it's effective. A little later two other stories are told (like AJ's) that converge in the final sequence and I liked these interruptions in the central story. There's a break in the narrative and in the linearity of time that forces us to be attentive to put the pieces together and understand the relationship between those parts. The problem is that right after that, as the movie heads to its climax, all the good work they've done up until then is lost, why? Because they forcefully resolve the origin of that strange presence in the house and also the information - not very convincing - comes as if it had fallen from the sky. In short, the explanation is clear and understandable, but for me it does not justify many of the questions that remain in the air after the film is over.

Y sí, también hay un sótano. Y una habitación oculta. Y un túnel... no son elementos novedosos (la verdad son trucos bastante usados) pero me gustó la forma en que el guión avanzó en esta parte de la película. Se siente la tensión y la intriga de saber cómo rayos está eso ahí y sobre todo por qué. Hasta allí la mezcla de la película es poco original, pero debo reconocer que es efectiva. Un poco después se cuentan otras dos historias (como la de AJ) que convergen en la secuencia final y estas interrupciones en la historia central me gustaron. Hay una ruptura de la narración y de la linealidad del tiempo que nos obliga a estar atentos para juntar las piezas y entender la relación entre esas partes. El problema es que justo después de eso, cuando la película se dirige a su clímax, se pierde todo el buen trabajo que habían hecho hasta entonces, ¿por qué? Porque resuelven de manera forzada el origen de esa presencia extraña en la casa y además la información - no muy convincente - llega como caída del cielo. En síntesis, la explicación es clara y se entiende, pero para mí no justifica muchas de las preguntas que quedan en el aire después de acabada la película.

So despite its strong start and strong performances, especially from Georgina Campbell, the story deflates, like a hot air balloon crashing after taking off. And given the repetition of this experience - that is, horror movies that start well but end badly or are generally bad - I wonder if this genre is dead, why aren't there really good horror movies anymore? Or why are they so rare? Or am I looking in the wrong places? Well, very rarely is it that I can get a horror movie that convinces me and that I consider good from start to finish, with a solid script, an acceptable resolution and a plot that makes sense, can any of you recommend me one? Hopefully one from the last five years or so (most of the best ones I've seen are from before that) to try and see if maybe I'm judging too harshly a genre that keeps letting me down. Así que a pesar de su buen inicio y buenas actuaciones, especialmente la de Georgina Campbell, la historia se desinfla, como un globo aeroestático que se estrellase después de despegar. Y ante la repetición de esta experiencia - es decir, películas de terror que inician bien pero acaban mal o que en general son malas - me pregunto si acaso este género estará muerto, ¿por qué ya no hay películas de terror verdaderamente buenas? ¿o por qué son tan escasas? ¿o es que estoy buscando en los lugares equivocados? Pues muy de vez en cuando es que puedo conseguir una película de terror que me convenza y que considere buena de inicio a fin, con un guión sólido, una resolución aceptable y una trama que tenga sentido, ¿alguno de ustedes puede recomendarme alguna? Ojalá que sea de los últimos cinco años o algo así (la mayoría de las mejores que he visto son de antes de eso) para tratar de ver si quizás estoy juzgando muy duramente un género que sigue decepcionándome.
