It has been more than ten years since I saw this film for the first time and every time I see it again I confirm my love for this story. In my first meeting I didn't know that the film was based on a novel, so now that I had the chance to read the book (finally) I naturally wanted to watch it again and make comparisons between what was written and what was shown on the screen.

Hace más de diez años que vi esta película por primera vez y a cada oportunidad que la vuelvo a ver confirmo mi amor por esta historia. En mi primer encuentro no sabía que la película estaba basada en una novela, así que ahora que tuve la oportunidad de leer el libro (por fin) quise por supuesto volver a verla y hacer comparaciones entre los escrito y lo mostrado en la pantalla.

Directed by Juan José Campanella, who wrote the script together with Eduardo Sacheri (author of the novel), El secreto de sus ojos (The Secret in Their Eyes) is a judicial, dramatic, political and romantic thriller starring the great Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil and Guillermo Francella. It tells the story of Benjamín Esposito (Ricardo Darín), an Argentine court official who has just retired from his position and then decides to write a novel. The film begins with Esposito's attempts to write a story and although the first sketches are about a more personal story, full of the nostalgia of a lost love, when digging into his memories he finds the memories of a case that marked him and his colleagues: the rape and murder of Liliana Colotto, a 23-year-old girl recently married to Ricardo Morales, the young widower. From a distance of twenty-five years, Benjamín remembers the crime, the judicial process, the murderer's motives, but then that story of which he never knew the end becomes a literary (and personal) obsession for Esposito and he embarks on a crusade to to be able to know the end of the story and, perhaps, to be able to finish his novel.

Dirigida por Juan José Campanella, quien escribió el guión junto a Eduardo Sacheri (autor de la novela), El secreto de sus ojos es un thriller judicial, dramático, político y romántico protagonizado por el gran Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil y Guillermo Francella. Cuenta la historia de Benjamín Espósito (Ricardo Darín), un oficial de Juzgado argentino que se acaba de jubilar de su cargo y decide entonces escribir una novela. La película inicia con los intentos de Espósito de escribir alguna historia y aunque los primeros esbozos van sobre una historia más personal, llena de la nostalgia de un amor perdido, al excavar en sus recuerdos da con las memorias de un caso que los marcó a él y a sus colegas: la violación y asesinato de Liliana Colotto, una joven de 23 años recién casada con Ricardo Morales, el joven viudo. Desde de una distancia de veinticinco años, Benjamín recuerda el crimen, el proceso judicial, los motivos del asesino, pero luego esa historia de la que nunca supo el final se convierte en una obsesión literaria (y personal) para Espósito y emprende una cruzada para poder conocer el final de la historia y, tal vez, poder terminar su novela.

Alternating his memories and the writing of his novel, Benjamín also confesses the love he feels for Irene, the same love he has felt for the last twenty-five years and which for one reason or another (excuses at last) he has never dared to manifest. The two love stories of the novel (Benjamín with Irene; Liliana with her husband Ricardo) make a great counterweight to all the judicial part, the suspense, the crime and the political overtones of certain actions that occur in the plot.

Alternando sus recuerdos y la escritura de su novela, Benjamín también va confesando el amor que siente por Irene, el mismo que ha sentido durante los últimos veinticinco años y que por una razón u otra (excusas al fin) nunca se ha atrevido a manifestar. Las dos historias de amor de la novela (Benjamín con Irene; Liliana con su esposo Ricardo) hacen un gran contrapeso a toda la parte judicial, el suspenso, el crimen y los tintes políticos de ciertas acciones que ocurren en la trama.

When reading the book I couldn't help but hear Ricardo Darín's voiceover in my head, not only because of the background of having seen the film several times but also because the character in the book has a way of expressing himself (with nostalgia, irony, some pathos) that Darín captured perfectly on the screen. It's not just that I can't imagine someone who could have done better. It's that I believe that there was no other option, as if Sacheri had written the novel with Darín in mind, or as if the actor himself had a past very similar to that of the protagonist of the novel, identifying himself perfectly and embodying it masterfully. Added to this are the excellent performances of the entire cast, where the great Guillermo Francella stands out for my personal taste in the role of Espósito's witty assistant, Pablo Sandoval, who is fond of drinking and answers the phone in the office of a differently each time (Hello, sperm bank, loan section) drawing laughter in the middle of a plot that navigates between the dynamic of a thriller and the nostalgic of a love story.

Al leer el libro no pude evitar escuchar la voz en off de Ricardo Darín en mi cabeza, no sólo por el antecedente de haber visto la película varias veces sino porque el personaje del libro tiene una forma de expresarse (con nostalgia, ironía, algo de patetismo) que Darín plasmó de forma perfecta en la pantalla. No es sólo que no imagine a alguien que hubiera podido hacerlo mejor. Es que creo que no existía otra opción, como si Sacheri hubiera escrito la novela con Darín en mente, o como si el propio actor tuviera un pasado muy similar al del protagonista de la novela, identificándose perfectamente y encarnándolo de forma magistral. A ello se suman las excelentes actuaciones de todo el reparto, en donde destaca para mi gusto personal el gran Guillermo Francella en el papel del ocurrente asistente de Espósito, Pablo Sandoval, quien es aficionado a la bebida y contesta el teléfono de la oficina de una manera diferente cada vez (Aló, banco de esperma, sección de préstamos) arrancando risas en medio de una trama que navega entre lo dinámico de un thriller y lo nostálgico de una historia de amor.

On this occasion, for the first time I was able to compare the book with the film and the truth is that I was amazed. The novel is wonderful, Sacheri's prose flows, his language is almost poetry, and the narrative rhythm of a non-linear time that we see on the screen is also in the book. There are some differences that do not matter (Benjamín's last name, the date of the events, the time elapsed), but there are some more important differences that, while preserving the essence of the characters and the story, reinforce the cinematographic aspects of the story and they give it more drama. In short, although the novel is very good, the movie is even better (something not very frequent). The attack against Benjamin gains more force on the screen, Ricardo Morales's final fate is magnificent (although the one in the book is more literary) the entire sequence related to the passion for soccer does not appear in the novel (can you believe it?) and the ending of the film is more hopeful than that of the book. Undoubtedly, the fact that the script was co-written between the director and the author of the novel (whose original title was La pregunta de sus ojos) had a lot to do with these improvements, which is why I think they were able to reinforce it without betraying the story magic.

The book | El libro

En esta oportunidad, por primera vez pude comparar el libro con la película y la verdad es que me asombré. La novela es maravillosa, la prosa de Sacheri fluye, su lenguaje es casi poesía y el ritmo narrativo de un tiempo no lineal que vemos en la pantalla, está también en el libro. Hay algunas diferencias que no pesan (el apellido de Benjamín, la fecha de los acontecimientos, el tiempo transcurrido), pero existen algunas diferencias más importantes que, conservando la esencia de los personajes y de la historia, refuerzan los aspectos cinematográficos de la historia y le imprimen mayor dramatismo. En pocas palabras, a pesar de que la novela es muy buena, la película es aún mejor (algo no muy frecuente). El atentado contra Benjamín cobra mayor fuerza en la pantalla, el destino final de Ricardo Morales es magnífico (aunque el del libro es más literario), toda la secuencia relacionada con la pasión por el fútbol no aparece en la novela (¿pueden creerlo?) y el final de la película es más esperanzador que el del libro. Sin duda alguna en estas mejoras tuvo mucho que ver el hecho de que el guión fue co escrito entre el director y el propio autor de la novela (cuyo título original era La pregunta de sus ojos), por eso creo que pudieron reforzarlo sin traicionar la magia de la historia.

The Secret in Their Eyes was the second Argentine film to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (in addition to several dozen awards throughout the world) after La historia oficial in 1985. For this year's edition of the Academy Awards, Argentina: 1985, which already won the Golden Globe in that category, is nominated. Will it mean the third Oscar for the South American country? As a curious fact, the latter also stars the great Ricardo Darín, who shines in my three favorite Argentine films of all time, Argentina 1985, Relatos Salvajes and of course The Secret in Their Eyes, one of the most compelling stories I've been able to read and see on the big screen, how many of you have seen it? did you like it? El secreto de sus ojos fue la segunda película argentina en obtener el premio Oscar a la mejor película de habla no inglesa (además de varias decenas de premios a lo largo y ancho del mundo) después de que lo hiciera La historia oficial en 1985. Para la edición de este año de los Premios de la Academia se encuentra nominada Argentina: 1985, la cual ya obtuvo el Golden Globe en esa categoría, ¿significará el tercer Oscar para el país suramericano?
