I don't usually watch sporting events. When I was a teenager I used to follow international soccer very closely, the Spanish league, the Bundesliga, il calcio, the Euro and the World Cup. I also liked to watch the tennis grand slams, the World Series, the NBA finals and the occasional game during the season, but it's been years since I've followed any sport closely and I'm not very-knowledgeable about the big names. Let's just say that since I discovered movies and books, those have been my two interests almost exclusively.

No suelo ver eventos deportivos. Cuando era adolescente seguía muy de cerca el fútbol internacional, la liga de España, la Bundesliga, il calcio, la eurocopa y el mundial. También me gustaba ver los grand slams del tenis, la serie mundial, las finales de la NBA y algún que otro partido durante la temporada, pero hace años que no sigo ningún deporte de cerca ni estoy muy enterado de los grandes nombres. Digamos que desde que descubrí el cine y los libros, esas han sido mis dos intereses, casi de forma exclusiva.

However, I remember when, from the age of eight and maybe until I was 18 or older, every other Sunday from March until almost the end of the year, my parents and my siblings would go to watch motorized competitions. Sometimes it was 250cc and 500cc motorcycle racing, but most of the time it was the grand prix of the world's greatest motor racing competition: Formula 1; or as it is now called, F1. In my father's workshop there were big pictures with drivers from the seventies and eighties, he had some scale models, some of us had Ferrari merchandise and there was a lot of talk about the drivers and the races. I grew up hearing about Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Mario Andretti (there was a picture of him aboard the iconic John Player Special), I saw Michael Schumacher, Kimi Räikkönen, Mika Häkkinen, Juan Pablo Montoya, Rubens Barrichello, and later Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen race; and a little less, or very occasionally, I have seen Charles Leclerc, George Russell, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz race. In other words, even if I don't follow the season year after year, I feel very close to F1. Maybe there's some family nostalgia (we often watched the races early on Sundays while having breakfast together), but the truth is that when I heard that a movie with that title would be released and that it would star Brad Pitt, I knew I had to go see it at the cinema, even if it was not the kind of movie I usually prefer. For example, a day before I saw F1: The Movie, and could have seen it, I preferred to see Hot Milk. That gives you an idea.

Sin embargo, recuerdo cuando, desde los ocho y tal vez hasta los 18 años o más, cada dos domingos desde marzo hasta casi el final del año, mis padres y mis hermanos se disponían a ver competencias motorizadas. A veces eran competencias de motos de 250cc y de 500cc, pero la mayoría de las veces eran los grandes premios de la mayor competición automovilística del mundo: la Fórmula 1; o como se le dice ahora, la F1. En el taller de mi padre habían cuadros grandes con pilotos de los años setenta y ochenta, él tenía algunos modelos a escala, algunos de nosotros teníamos merchandise de Ferrari y se conversaba mucho sobre los pilotos y las carreras. Por ejemplo, un día antes de ver F1: The Movie, y pudiendo haberla visto, preferí ver Hot Milk. Eso les da una idea.

F1: The Movie tells the story of Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), a fictional driver who was the most promising Formula 1 phenomenon thirty years ago, until an accident ended his career. After many years, Hayes returned to racing, but not in F1 but in other disciplines - although also recognized - such as Daytona or Dakar, becoming a sort of “driver for hire”. Wherever there was someone looking for a driver, Hayes came to race. But not for the money, but to have the opportunity to drive one more time.

F1: The Movie cuenta la historia de Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), un piloto de ficción quien fuera el fenómeno más prometedor de la Fórmula 1 treinta años atrás, hasta que un accidente acabó con su carrera. Luego de muchos años, Hayes volvió a correr, pero no en la F1 sino en otras disciplinas - aunque también reconocidas - como Daytona o Dakar, convirtiéndose en una especie de piloto a sueldo. Allí donde había alguien buscando un piloto, allí llegaba Hayes para correr. Pero no por el dinero, sino por tener la oportunidad de conducir una vez más.

After some twenty years of leading a somewhat lonely life, with ups and downs, as a driver of anything and everything, Sonny's former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) seeks him out because he needs him. Cervantes owns a Formula 1 team that is on the verge of bankruptcy. They have gone half the season without scoring any points and although they have a promising rookie driver, young Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), and a very talented technical director (Kerry Condon, who plays Kate McKenna), they are still struggling to finish races. Reuben's offer is for Sonny to return to the premier class of world motorsport and have one last chance, not only to compete but also to save the team from disaster. Hayes is hesitant at first. He hasn't driven an F1 car for thirty years and although he has decades of experience as a driver, these cars are different from what he is used to. However, because Ruben is his friend - and well, also because that's what the movie script needs - Sonny accepts and arrives at the APXGP team mid-season to try to save it from bankruptcy. Ruben's decision draws the attention of the team's board of directors, the press and especially Pearce, who immediately goes on the defensive against his new teammate because he realizes that Hayes is not coming to be second in command, but to show what he is made of and to fight to compete, both collectively and individually. If Pearce wants to win, if he wants to make the leap to the top, he will have to outperform Hayes as well.

Tras unos veinte años de llevar una vida algo solitaria, con altos y bajos, como piloto de cualquier cosa, el antiguo compañero de equipo de Sonny, Rubén Cervantes (Javier Bardem) lo busca porque lo necesita. Cervantes es propietario de un equipo de Fórmula 1 que se encuentra al borde de la quiebra. Llevan la mitad de la temporada sin sumar ningún punto y aunque cuentan con un piloto novato que promete mucho, el joven Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), y una talentosísima directora técnica (Kerry Condon, quien interpreta a Kate McKenna), siguen teniendo muchas dificultades para terminar las carreras. La oferta de Rubén es que Sonny vuelva a la categoría reina del automovilismo mundial y tenga una última oportunidad, no sólo para competir sino también para salvar al equipo del desastre. Sin embargo, como Rubén es su amigo - y bueno, también porque es lo que necesita el guion de la película - Sonny acepta y llega al equipo APXGP a mitad de la temporada para intentar salvarla de la quiebra. La decisión de Rubén llama la atención de la junta directiva del equipo, de la prensa y sobre todo de Pearce, quien de inmediato se pone a la defensiva contra su nuevo compañero de equipo porque se da cuenta de que Hayes no viene a ser el segundo al mando, sino a demostrar de qué está hecho y a luchar por competir, tanto en lo colectivo como en lo individual. Si Pearce quiere ganar, si quiere dar el salto a los primeros lugares, tendrá que superar también a Hayes.

From there, we'll have 155 minutes of action, victories and defeats, laughter, drama and, it must be said: clichés. We have seen dozens of stories in which experience confronts youth, prudence confronts impetus, the old confronts the new. Hayes represents the racers of yesteryear, of the eighties, nineties, the classic dinosaurs who raced for the love of speed and little else; while Pierce represents the racers of today who must also fulfill a promotional facet in social networks and who are - although athletes - also celebrities.

A partir de allí se vienen 155 minutos de acción, victorias y derrotas, risas, drama y también hay que decirlo: clichés. Hemos visto decenas de historias en las que la experiencia se enfrenta a la juventud, la prudencia al ímpetu, lo viejo a lo nuevo. Hayes representa a los corredores de antes, de los años ochenta, noventa, los dinosaurios clásicos que corrían por amor a la velocidad y poco más; mientras que Pierce representa a los corredores de ahora que también deben cumplir una faceta promocional en redes sociales y que son - aunque deportistas - también celebridades.

Despite its length, the film keeps you attentive, enchanted and immersed in the story, thanks to a sum of talent in every aspect: direction by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) screenplay by Ehren Kruger, production by Jerry Bruckheimer, Brad Pitt and Lewis Hamilton, music by Hans Zimmer, cinematography by Claudio Miranda, sequences filmed not only on the real race tracks during the official grand prix, but also the appearance of real drivers (which helps to give a great deal of verisimilitude to the story) and of course the performances that are an excellent support around a brilliant Brad Pitt who, although he plays a role similar to others we have seen him on screen, fulfills that mixture of arrogance, charm and talent that was indispensable in a character like Sonny Hayes. An explosive mixture of hero and anti-hero, Hayes is a man with courage and fears, with a strong exterior and a vulnerable interior, but above all he is a passionate man. And that's what makes F1 an engaging story to watch again and again. Hayes races because he loves to race. No matter where, when or how, he lives to race, and that passion, that dedication to some discipline or art helps turn good characters into endearing people. It doesn't matter if you don't follow Formula 1, it doesn't matter if you don't know about cars, or if you don't know how to drive, F1: The Movie is a story you will love. Personally, this is the best movie I've seen in the theater this year and I'm looking forward to seeing it again soon, how many of you have already seen it? I'll read you in the comments.

A pesar de su duración, la película lo mantiene a uno atento, encantado y sumergido en la historia, gracias a una suma de talento en cada aspecto: dirección de Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) guion de Ehren Kruger, producción de Jerry Bruckheimer, Brad Pitt y Lewis Hamilton, música de Hans Zimmer, fotografía de Claudio Miranda, secuencias filmadas no sólo en las pistas reales de la competición durante los grandes premios oficiales, sino también la aparición de pilotos reales (lo que ayuda a darle una gran cuota de verosimilitud a la historia) y por supuesto las actuaciones que resultan un excelente apoyo alrededor de un Brad Pitt brillante que, si bien interpreta un papel similar a otros que le hemos visto en pantalla, cumple con esa mezcla de arrogancia, encanto y talento que era indispensable en un personaje como Sonny Hayes. Mezcla explosiva de héroe y anti héroe, Hayes es un hombre con valor y con miedos, de exterior fuerte e interior vulnerable, pero sobre todo es un hombre apasionado. Y eso es lo que convierte a F1 en una historia atractiva para ver una y otra vez. Hayes corre porque ama correr. No importa dónde, cuándo o cómo, él vive para correr, y esa pasión, esa entrega a alguna disciplina o arte ayuda a convertir personajes buenos en personas entrañables. No importa si no sigues la Fórmula 1, no importa si no conoces de automóviles, o si no sabes conducir, F1: The Movie es una historia que te encantará. En lo personal, esta es la mejor película que he visto en el cine este año y tengo ganas de volver a verla pronto, ¿cuántos de ustedes ya la vieron? Los leo en los comentarios.
