Although not everyone has seen this film, I am sure that everyone has heard references to it as one of the biggest and best productions in the history of cinema, with a legendary epic and a love story immortalized on the big screen with an elite duo: Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable. But Gone with the Wind is more than that and even though more than eighty years have passed since its release, it's still a great film.

Pero Gone with the Wind es más que eso y aunque hayan pasado más de ochenta años desde su estreno sigue siendo una gran película.

Summarizing the plot of a story like this is a difficult task and not only because of its four hours of duration but also because there are many things to highlight. The film begins in the second half of the 19th century in the South of the United States where we find the O'Hara family, whose eldest daughter Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) emerges as the most beautiful, capricious and selfish young woman in the entire region. All men young and old want to be close to her and crave a little of her attention and although Scarlett feeds off the attention of all these men and enjoys it, deep down what she regrets is not being able to have the love of Ashley (Leslie Howard), who is soon to marry Scarlett's cousin Melanie (played brilliantly by Olivia de Havilland). But in that climate of celebration, joy and potential romances, the Civil War broke out, a war that pitted the Northern States against the Southern States for almost five years, leaving in its wake countless deaths, wounded, widows, orphans and entire cities burned and destroyed. Just before the war breaks out and everyone goes to the front, including Ashley, Scarlett meets Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) a cynical, arrogant and somewhat mysterious man who does not want to participate in the war and who - they cannot know it at that time - will be a frequent presence at crucial moments in the life of Scarlett and her great love, although at first she finds him disgusting and rude.

Although the love story between Scarlett and Rhett is one of the highlights of the film, there are also other themes: love and heartbreak, failed marriages, family, the economic crisis after the war, starting over after losing everything and the unbreakable spirit of a woman who does not let herself be defeated and who, even if she falls many times, continues to move forward.

Aunque la historia de amor entre Scarlett y Rhett sea de lo más destacado de la película, también hay otros temas: amores y desamores, matrimonios fallidos, la familia, la crisis económica después de la guerra, el comenzar de nuevo después de perderlo todo y el inquebrantable espíritu de una mujer que no se deja doblegar y que aunque caiga muchas veces, sigue adelante.

Instead of stopping to recount scenes of some of the many things that happen in those 238 minutes full of drama, I would like to talk a little about other relevant aspects. To begin with, the direction is excellent and although the original director was George Cukor (fired during filming) and Sam Wood directed the last scenes, the greatest workload in this part was done by Victor Flemming, another great of the time who directed the also iconic The Wizard of Oz that same year. Screenplay by Sidney Howard is a highly adapted adaptation of Margaret Mitchell's 1937 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, production design, editing, cinematography, costumes, soundtrack, Gone with the Wind stands out in each of these aspects, and of course in the performances. Not only those of the leading couple but also those of the supporting actors and actresses, two of whom were nominated for an Oscar, with Hattie McDaniel winning for her role as Mammy, the O'Hara maid, becoming the first Afro-descendant in history of cinema to win an Academy Award. I personally liked what Olivia de Havilland did more as Melanie and although I am not a big fan of Clark Gable, I admit that he played a great role. Not to mention Vivien Leigh giving life to one of the most iconic characters on the big screen ever.

El guión de Sidney Howard es una gran adaptación de la novela ganadora del Premio Pulitzer en 1937 escrita por Margaret Mitchell, el diseño de producción, el montaje, la fotografía, el vestuario, la banda sonora, Gone with the Wind destaca en cada uno de estos aspectos, y por supuesto en las actuaciones. No sólo las de la pareja protagonista sino también las de los actores y actrices secundarios, dos de las cuales estuvieron nominadas al Oscar resultando ganadora Hattie McDaniel por su papel como Mammy, la criada de los O'Hara, convirtiéndose en la primera afrodescendiente en la historia del cine en ganar un premio de la Academia. A mí personalmente me gustó más lo que hizo Olivia de Havilland como Melanie y aunque no soy muy fan de Clark Gable reconozco que hizo un gran papel. Ni qué decir de Vivien Leigh dando vida a uno de los personajes más icónicos de la gran pantalla.

But - in my opinion - although there is merit in the performances, there is also great merit in the construction of the characters. It's true that there are some stereotypes, Rhett Butler is as cynical and selfish as Rick is in Casablanca (at least at the beginning), a beautiful leading lady was the hallmark of the era of Ingrid Berman, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Katherine Hepburn (all they were great actresses), but the characters in Gone with the Wind are more complex than the rest and are unpredictable, honest in their contradictions and above all they feel alive. Scarlett O'Hara is a vain, spoiled woman, somewhat superficial when she is young, but she has a character and a strength that helps her keep her family afloat after the war and when after the misery she promises not to starve again no matter what she has to do, you know she will do whatever it takes and the character delivers. However, she is also capable of love, of feeling tenderness, of empathy, but what I liked most about that character was that she was true to herself at all times. Forgetting the social conventions of the time (both that of the story and that of the film's premiere), ignoring the gossip, he was not afraid to till the land, to keep company that were not recommended, to go to a party when she should - according to the rules - stay home to suffer. Scarlett O'Hara is a character that is both stormy and tormented, with the force of a hurricane and a tragic destiny that is impossible to forget. In several ways she is a Madame Bovary, but with greater character.

Pero - en mi opinión - aunque hay mérito en las actuaciones, hay también un gran mérito en la construcción de los personajes. Es cierto que hay algunos estereotipos, Rhett Butler es tan cínico y egoísta como lo es Rick en Casablanca (al menos al principio), una protagonista hermosa era el sello de la época de Ingrid Berman, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo y Katherine Hepburn (todas ellas eran grandes actrices), pero los personajes de Gone with the Wind son más complejos que el resto y resultan impredecibles, honestos en sus contradicciones y sobre todo se sienten vivos. Scarlett O'Hara es una mujer vanidosa, mimada, algo superficial cuando joven, pero tiene un carácter y una fuerza que la ayuda a lograr mantener a flote a su familia después de la guerra y cuando después de la miseria se promete no volver a pasar hambre, no importa lo que tenga que hacer, uno sabe que hará lo que sea y el personaje cumple. Sin embargo también es capaz de amar, de sentir ternura, empatía, pero lo que más me gustó de ese personaje fue que fue fiel a sí misma en todo momento. And the same goes for Rhett Butler. Cynical and arrogant at first, he seems to be a man who always moves with the wind in his favor and who takes everything for his own benefit. But then he shows some altruism, pain, sadness and although he never stops being somewhat cynical, he's capable of having gestures of chivalry and generosity with several people. This makes the relationship between Rhett and Scarlett conflictive, violent, complementary, intermittent, but always intense. And to balance that intensity then there is the faint-hearted Ashley, unable to decide to love Scarlett or stop loving her; and the heart of the film: Melanie. Olivia de Havilland managed, when playing Melanie Hamilton, to project all the goodness and sweetness of a soul that never thought about itself. Scarlett's cousin, married to her first love interest, on the brink of death a couple of times, a volunteer at a military hospital, offended by various gossip, but also helped by someone she least expected, Melanie's character is the soft calm breeze when everything around is stormy. And the best part is that so much kindness, so much generosity, is not implausible because the character of the actress and the character also show how difficult it is sometimes to do the right thing and act from the heart and not from the heat of the moment, anger, jealousy or impotence. That's why, along with Scarlett, Melanie is my other favorite character.

Y lo mismo ocurre con Rhett Butler. Cínico y arrogante al principio, parece ser un hombre que se mueve con el viento a favor siempre y que toma todo en su propio beneficio. Pero luego demuestra algo de altruismo, dolor, tristeza y aunque nunca deja de ser algo cínico es capaz de tener gestos de caballerosidad y generosidad con varias personas. Eso hace que la relación entre Rhett y Scarlett sea conflictiva, violenta, complementaria, intermitente, pero siempre intensa. Y para equilibrar esa intensidad entonces está el pusilánime Ashley, incapaz de decidirse a amar a Scarlett o a dejar de amarla; y el corazón de la película: Melanie. Olivia de Havilland consiguió, al interpretar a Melanie Hamilton, proyectar toda la bondad y dulzura de un alma que nunca pensó en sí misma. Prima de Scarlett, casada con el primer capricho amoroso de esta, al borde de la muerte un par de veces, voluntaria en un hospital militar, agraviada por diferentes chismorreos, pero socorrida también por quién menos se esperaba, el personaje de Melanie es la suave brisa de la calma cuando todo alrededor es tormenta. Y la mejor parte es que tanta bondad, tanta generosidad, no resulta inverosímil porque el carácter de la actriz y el personaje denotan también lo difícil que a veces resulta hacer lo correcto y actuar desde el corazón y no desde el calor del momento, la rabia, los celos o la impotencia. Por eso, junto a Scarlett, Melanie es mi otro personaje favorito.

A woman of character who seems indomitable, but who also succumbs to love and who overcomes all adversity, always rising once again. I won't say that she has exemplary behavior because she is often cynical, hypocritical and manipulative, but her determination and bravery must be applauded. And of course Vivien Leigh's performance.

Hay que tener en cuenta también que en la época estaba muy difundido el concepto de la mujer como damisela en peligro, como trofeo de belleza o como ama de casa pasiva que espera mientras el hombre va a la guerra, labra la tierra y hace todo lo importante; y es en medio de todas esas convenciones estereotípicas entre las que irrumpe Scarlett O'Hara con su deseo inagotable de vivir, de conseguir lo que quiere, de amar a quien desea amar, de ser y hacer lo que desea cueste lo que le cueste y duélale a quién le duela. Una mujer de carácter que parece indomable, pero que sucumbe al amor también y que se sobrepone a todas las adversidades levantándose siempre una vez más. No diré que tiene un comportamiento ejemplar porque resulta cínica, hipócrita y manipuladora muchas veces, pero hay que aplaudir su determinación y su valentía. Y por supuesto la interpretación de Vivien Leigh.

So although I could say a thousand and one more things in favor of Gone with the Wind I feel that nothing will compare to what you yourselves can conclude from seeing it. A historical gem, a legendary epic, a cultural icon and almost four hours of good dramatic, period and romantic cinema, which I recommend seeing to all film buffs regardless of their age or origin. Probably everyone who participated in the film has already passed away, but Gone with the Wind will live and last even beyond us because art and good stories are larger than life itself, how many of you have seen this gem?
