Robin Williams is one of the most beloved and remembered actors in Hollywood history. Almost ten years after his death there are still places that I have not visited in his extensive filmography, but from what I know, the nineties were the decade in which he left us some of his most memorable roles such as Patch Adamas, Mrs. Doubtfire and the genie in Aladdin. And precisely from that time dates this story and this performance that earned him the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Robin Williams es uno de los actores más queridos y recordados de la historia de Hollywood. A casi diez años de su fallecimiento aún hay lugares que no he visitado de su extensa filmografía, pero por lo que sé, los años noventa fueron la década en la que nos dejó algunos de sus papeles más memorables como los de Patch Adamas, Mrs. Doubtfire y el genio en Aladdin. Y precisamente de esa época data esta historia y esta interpretación que le valió el Oscar a Mejor Actor de Reparto.

Good Will Hunting is a dramatic film directed by Gus Van Sant (Elephant, Milk) in which the story of Will (Matt Damon) is told, a young man who works as a janitor at MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He is somewhat rebellious, he goes out to have a few beers with his friends, he meets girls from time to time and he's also usually involved in street fights, but there is something special about Will: he's a genius at mathematics. It's not only that he's intelligent and diligent (yes, he has read many books in the public library) but that he's unusually brilliant at mathematics: equations, problems, theorems, matrices, and other concepts appear before him revealed with an enviable simplicity. When Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård) notices that Will has solved in minutes a couple of complex math problems that he left on a blackboard at the university, he wants to find him and mentor him to become the next great brilliant mind in the world. But the biggest obstacle Lambeau will have is Will himself. A series of minor crimes have landed him in jail again and again, and in his last arrest Lambeau manages to convince the judge to release Will into his custody on two conditions: that he add him to his mathematics department and that the boy sees a therapist.

Good Will Hunting es una película dramática dirigida por Gus Van Sant (Elephant, Milk) en la que se cuenta la historia de Will (Matt Damon), un joven que trabaja como personal de limpieza en el MIT (el Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts). Es algo rebelde, sale a tomar algunas cervezas con sus amigos, de vez en cuando conoce chicas y también suele estar envuelto en peleas callejera, pero hay algo especial en Will: es un genio para las matemáticas. No es sólo que sea inteligente y aplicado (sí, ha leído muchos libros en la biblioteca pública) sino que es inusualmente brillante para las matemáticas: las ecuaciones, los problemas, teoremas, matrices, y demás conceptos aparecen ante él revelados con una sencillez envidiable. Cuando el profesro Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård) se da cuenta de que Will ha resuelto en minutos un par de complejos problemas matemáticos que él dejó en una pizarra en la universidad, quiere encontrarlo y orientarlo para que se convierta en la próxima gran mente brillante de las matemáticas en el mundo. Pero el mayor obstáculo que tendrá Lambeau es el propio Will. Una serie de delitos menores lo han llevado una y otra vez a la cárcel y en su última detención Lambeau logra convencer al juez de que libere a Will bajo su custodia con dos condiciones: que lo sume a su departamento de matemáticas y que el chico vea a un terapeuta.

Will agrees with the first, math is a walk in the park for him. But he doesn't take therapy seriously, so he makes life impossible for all the psychologists Lambeau takes him to. Until he meets Sean Maguire (Robin Williams), Lambeau's former classmate and a different therapist, more bohemian and someone genuinely interested in helping him.

Will está de acuerdo con lo primero, las matemáticas son un paseo para él. Pero no se toma en serio lo de las terapias, así que le hace imposible la vida a todos los psicológos a los que Lambeau lo lleva. The beginning of their relationship is not the best. Will is arrogant, rude, doesn't want to go to therapy, and thinks Sean is just another shrink. He says things, tries to analyze him, and gives him an offensive reading, but only because Will wants to be inaccessible: he doesn't want to talk. Going to a psychological consultation means talking about yourself, your fears, your past, and other things that your pride prevents you from sharing. However, little by little, Sean's frankness, his own story and that mix of firmness and empathy manage to break down Will's barriers and a beautiful relationship with a paternal slant emerges between the two. Now, while Lambeau wants Sean to help Will realize that he has an extraordinary talent and that he shouldn't waste it on the streets and hanging out with his friends in bars, Sean wants to help Will heal his wounds and decide for himself what suits him best. This leads to some disagreements between the two former companions and provokes some of the most interesting conversations and dilemmas in the film. Let's think about what would have happened if Einstein had decided to be a chef, or if Stephen Hawking had wanted to go out drinking with his friends every night, did they really have the freedom to be something different than what they were? Does being a genius mean sacrificing your desires in exchange for what your intelligence can mean for all humanity?

El inicio de su relación no es el mejor. Will es arrogante, grosero, no quiere ir a terapia y cree que Sean es otro loquero más. Lo dice cosas, intenta analizarlo él y le arroja una lectura ofensiva, pero sólo porque Will quiere ser inaccesible: no quiere hablar. Ir a una consulta psicológica significa hablar de sí mismo, de sus miedos, su pasado, y otras cosas que su orgullo le impide compartir. Sin embargo, poco a poco, la franqueza de Sean, su propia historia y esa mezcla entre firmeza y empatía, logran derribar las barreras de Will y entre los dos surge una bonita relación con un sesgo paternal. Ahora bien, mientras Lambeau quiere que Sean ayude a Will a darse cuenta de que tiene un talento extraordinario y que no debe desperdiciarlo en la calle y juntándose con sus amigos en los bares, Sean quiere ayudar a Will a que sane sus heridas y decida por él mismo lo que mejor le convenga. Eso genera algunos desacuerdos entre los dos ex compañeros y provoca algunas de las conversaciones y dilemas más interesantes de la película. Pensemos en qué hubiera pasado si Einstein hubiera decidido ser cocinero, o si Stephen Hawking hubiera querido salir de copas con sus amigos todas las noches, ¿tenían realmente la libertad de ser algo diferente a lo que eran?, ser un genio ¿significa sacrificar tus deseos a cambio de lo que tu inteligencia pueda significar para toda la humanidad?

In this area, topics such as free will, social and human responsibility, desires can be debated (can a young man in his early twenties make such a decision?), fortune and the condemnation of having a gift, the importance of having a support, a guide and many other things that make one talk about this film long after having seen it.

En ese terreno se pueden debatir temas como el libre albedrío, la responsabilidad social y humana, los deseos (¿puede tomar una decisión así un joven de veintipocos años?), la fortuna y la condena de tener un don, la importancia de tener un apoyo, un guía y muchas otras cosas más que hacen que uno hable de esta película mucho después de haberla visto.

Will & Sean

In technical aspects the film complies, but does not dazzle. The script written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck when they were not even thirty years old is very good and earned them the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay; and the cast is excellent, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård, Minnie Driver, Casey Affleck; but this movie is what it is thanks to Robin Williams' performance as Sean Maguire. He is not the protagonist of the story, but he is the key character and whether the film worked or not depended on that role. I can't think of any other actor to play the convincing, generous, understanding, committed, funny and sad therapist that Sean is. His story, which he reveals little by little, is very emotional, and manages to disarm not only Will but also those who watch the film. On the screen it is only Will who goes to the consultation and confronts Sean, but in front of them, whoever watches the film also reflects on his own existence and although one does not identify with the biography of either of those two characters, he does manage to evaluate the past, the present and take stock, what is important to me? What do I want to be and do? Have I done what I wanted? what am I waiting for? Watching this movie was a great experience and although I regret not having seen it before, I want to vindicate myself with the memory of Robin Williams by paying another debt that I have outstanding with him: watch Dead Poets Society, have any of you seen these movies? En los aspectos técnicos la película cumple, pero no deslumbra. El guión escrito por Matt Damon y Ben Affleck cuando ni siquiera llegaban a los treinta años es muy bueno y les valió el Oscar a Mejor Guión Original; y el reparto es excelente, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård, Minnie Driver, Casey Affleck; pero esta película es lo que es gracias a la interpretación de Robin Williams como Sean Maguire. No es el protagonista de la historia, pero es el personaje clave y de ese rol dependía que la película funcionara o no. No se me ocurre algún otro actor para encarnar a ese terapeuta tan convincente, generoso, comprensivo, comprometido, divertido y triste, que es Sean. Su historia, la cual va revelando poco a poco, es muy emotiva, y logra desarmar no sólo a Will sino también a quienes ven la película. En la pantalla es sólo Will quien acude a consulta y se enfrenta a Sean, pero frente a ellos, quien ve la película también reflexiona sobre su propia existencia y aunque uno no se identifique con la biografía de alguno de esos dos personajes, sí logra evaluar el pasado, el presente y hacer un balance, ¿qué es lo importante para mí? ¿qué quiero ser y hacer? ¿he hecho lo que he querido? ¿qué estoy esperando? Ver esta película fue una gran experiencia y aunque lamento no haberla visto antes, quiero reivindicarme con la memoria de Robin Williams pagando otra deuda que tengo pendiente con él: ver Dead Poets Society, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto estas películas? ¿cuál es su favorita de Robin Williams?
