I have previously said that I don't watch many horror movies. Not because they scare me, but because most of the ones I have seen in recent years (decades) seem repetitive and predictable, without very solid plots or good endings. That's why I think twice before watching a film of this type and to decide to see it there has to be something different, at least in the proposal, that really catches my attention.

Anteriormente he contado que no veo muchas películas de terror. No porque me den miedo, sino porque la mayoría de las que he visto en los últimos años (décadas) me parecen repetitivas y predecibles, sin tramas muy sólidas ni buenos finales. Por eso lo pienso dos veces antes de ver una película de este tipo y para decidirme a verla tiene que haber algo diferente, al menos en la propuesta, que realmente me llame la atención.

And that was exactly what caught my attention about Late Night with the Devil, which seemed different to me in its proposal. The film, written and directed by Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes, and starring David Dastmalchian, tells the story of Jack Delroy (Dastmalchian), the host of Night Owls, a television program in the US in the mid-1970s in the style of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. The first ten or fifteen minutes of the film recount, in documentary style, the history of the program, Jack, his wife who died of cancer, the ups and downs in the ratings, strange rumors about the host and some memorable moments. from the early years of Night Owls until reaching 1977, at which point the numbers are low and the life of the program seems to be coming to an end. Therefore, for Halloween night, Jack and his team prepare a special program with luxury guests to talk about topics not only conducive to the holiday but also interesting at any time. Secret societies, paranormal phenomena, communications with the dead, rituals, objects charged with a certain power, and other things are discussed by Jack and his guests who include a medium, a skeptic (who is also a kind of retired magician) and a parapsychologist who goes to the program accompanied by Lilly, a teenager who - according to her - is possessed.

Y eso fue justo lo que me llamó la atención de Late Night with the Devil, que me pareció diferente en la propuesta. La película, escrita y dirigida por Cameron Cairnes y Colin Cairnes, y protagonizada por David Dastmalchian cuenta la historia de Jack Delroy (Dastmalchian) el conductor de Night Owls, un programa de televisión en los EEUU de mediados de los años setenta al estilo de The Tonight Show con Johnny Carson. Los primeros diez o quince minutos de la cinta hacen un recuento, a forma de documental, de la historia del programa, de Jack, de su esposa que falleció de cáncer, los altibajos en el rating, rumores extraños sobre el conductor y algunos momentos memorables de los primeros años de Night Owls hasta llegar a 1977, momento en el que los números están bajos y la vida del programa parece estar llegando a su fin. Por eso, para la noche de Halloween, Jack y su equipo preparan un programa especial con invitados de lujo para conversar sobre temas no sólo propicios para la festividad sino también interesantes en cualquier momento. Sociedades secretas, fenómenos paranormales, comunicaciones con los muertos, rituales, objetos cargados de cierto poder, y otras cosas son conversadas por Jack y sus invitados que incluyen a un médium, un escéptico (que además es una especie de mago retirado) y una parapsicológa que va al programa a acompañda por Lilly, una adolescente que - según June - está poseída.

At the beginning the tone of the program is relaxed, with a family atmosphere, with some jokes and impeccable leadership by Jack, but little by little, as the program progresses from one segment to another and we add guests, some strange things begin to happen that at first seem to go unnoticed by everyone present, but then become too obvious to ignore.

Al inicio el tono del programa es relajado, de ambiente familiar, con algunas bromas y una conducción impecable por parte de Jack, pero poco poco, a medida que el programa avanza de un segmento a otro y vamos sumando invitados, comienzan a suceder algunas cosas extrañas que al inicio parecen pasar desapercibidas para todos los presentes, pero que luego son demasiado evidentes como para ignorarlas.

It must be said that the aesthetics of the film are impeccable. It was not filmed on wide screen like modern movies but like television programs of the time. The colors of the studio, the design of the clothes, the hairstyles, the historical context, the type of host that Jack is, everything was handled perfectly to transport the viewer to the year 1977. The differentiation of the color scenes (which would be the program as such that was broadcast) with the black and white ones (which covers what happens in the middle of the commercials behind the camera) is a well-chosen and also very well executed cinematographic resource. The performances are very good and the script is original and quite well balanced, in the themes and characters, and it doses the information so that little by little we build the story. Just like Jack's guests and the audience that is there in the studio, the viewers who watch the film begin the story with some laughter and the certainty that the paranormal does not exist, but are tricks to deceive us, then they begin to doubt despite the rational explanations that one of the guests makes about the different things that are happening, to finally convince themself that it wasn't a good idea to summon so many unknown forces in the same night.

Hay que decir que la estética de la película es impecable. No fue filmada en wide screen como las películas modernas sino como los programas de televisión de la época. Los colores del estudio, el diseño de la ropa, los peinados, el contexto histórico, el tipo de conductor que es Jack, todo fue manejado de manera perfecta para transportar al espectador al año 1977. La diferenciación de las escenas a color (lo que sería el programa como tal que fue transmitido) con las de blanco y negro (que cubre lo que sucede en medio de los comerciales detrás de cámara) es un recurso cinematográfico bien elegido y también muy bien ejeutado. Las actuaciones son muy buenas y el guión es original y está bastante bien balanceado, en los temas y los personajes, y va dosificando la información de manera que poco a poco vamos construyendo la historia. Así como los invitados de Jack y la audiencia que está allí en el estudio, los espectadores que ven la película inician la historia con algunas risas y la certeza de que lo paranormal no existe, sino que son trucos para engañarnos, luego, comienzan a dudar a pesar de las explicaciones racionales que hace uno de los invitados sobre las diferentes cosas que van sucediendo, para finalmente convencerse de que no fue una buena idea convocar tantas fuerzas desconocidas en una misma noche.

It's difficult to talk about the successes of some scenes without revealing them, so I prefer to keep those comments to myself, which, although on the one hand they can help in a positive evaluation of the film, on the other they can harm the experience of those who want to see the film and ruin the surprise by end of some sequences.

Es difícil hablar de los aciertos de algunas escenas sin revelarlas, así que prefiero guardarme esos señalamientos que aunque por un lado pueden ayudar a una valoración positiva de la cinta, por otro pueden perjudicar la experiencia de quienes quieran ver la película y arruinar la sorpresa al final de algunas secuencias.

I wouldn't dare say that Late Night with the Devil is a great horror movie, but I did find it entertaining (that is, it didn't become tedious, it kept me attentive from start to finish) and although uses the same horror elements present in thousands of other stories, I think it uses them in good variety and measure, without abusing them and provides - within the same content of the film - different points of view, the believer and the skeptic, which lend credibility to the context. If we add to this the visual aspect we have a film that is far above films like Inmaculate, for example, to name another recent horror film, this one much more predictable, full of clichés and lacking logical sense. If the program Night Owls had really existed, if Jack Delroy had been a real character, I cannot imagine a better way to close the life of the program than with that Halloween special that would undoubtedly have remained stuck in the minds of viewers and would have fueled their nightmares for countless nights. If you like horror movies you will probably have already seen this one, but if - like me - you are not a big fan of the genre, I still recommend that you give it a chance. In less than ninety minutes Late Night with the Devil shows better things than some famous franchises of the genre have done for decades, have you seen the movie yet? I read you in the comments.

No me atrevería a decir que Late Night with the Devil es una gran película de terror, pero sí se me hizo entretenida (es decir, no se me hizo tediosa, me mantuvo atento de inicio a fin) y aunque utiliza los mismos elementos de terror presentes en miles de otras historias, creo que los usa en buena variedad y medida, sin abusar de ellos y brinda - dentro del mismo contenido de la película - diferentes puntos de vista, el creyente y el escéptico, que le arrojan credibilidad al contexto. Si a ello sumamos el aspecto visual tenemos una película que está muy por encima de películas como Inmaculate, por ejemplo, por nombrar otra cinta de terror reciente, esa sí mucho más predecible, repleta de clichés y carente de un sentido lógico. Si el programa Night Owls hubiera existido de verdad, si Jack Delroy fuese un personaje real, no imagino mejor forma de cerrar la vida del programa que con ese especial de Halloween que sin duda se hubiera quedado clavado en la mente de los televidentes y hubiera alimentado sus pesadillas durante incontables noches. Si les gustan las películas de terror probablemente ya habrán visto esta, pero si - como yo - no son muy fans del género de igual forma les recomiendo que le den una oportunidad. En menos de noventa minutos Late Night with the Devil muestra mejores cosas que las que han hecho algunas franquicias famosas del género durante décadas, ¿ya vieron la película?
