There's a religious saying that "The Lord works in mysterious ways". I'm not much of a religious person, but sometimes I wonder if there isn't some kind of god, or destiny, or an "everything is written" that is exclusively dedicated to cinema. I say this because on more than one occasion I've had the feeling that watching a certain movie at a certain time in my life—and not at another—is due to reasons that, if random, are at least very curious.

Hay una frase religiosa que dice que "El Señor obra de maneras misteriosas". Yo no soy un tipo muy creyente, pero a veces me pregunto si no habrá una especie de dios, o destino, o un todo está escrito, pero que se dedique exclusivamente a lo cinematográfico. Digo esto porque en más de una oportunidad he tenido la sensación de que ver cierta película en cierto momento de mi vida - y no en otro - se debe a razones que, de ser azarosas, son cuando menos muy curiosas.

Some years ago I added L'événement to my to-watch list, I don't remember why, and then when I read the book on which it's based I thought it's time had come. However, again for a reason unknown to me, I didn't see it then and it was relegated to oblivion until reviewing the stories currently available on Max (HBO) I again came across the close-up of that face and those deep blue eyes that held another surprise for me that I'll tell you about later. L'événement is a French film, directed by Audrey Diwan and co-written by her with Marcia Romano from the book of the same name by Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux. The story stars Anamaria Vartolomei, a French actress of Romanian origin who plays what would be the young version of Ernaux, as the book, like all of the author's work, is based on her own life. It's the sixties in France and Anne (Vartolomei), a girl from a rural town, goes to the city to attend classes. Anne is brilliant and wants to dedicate herself to literature, which seems to be a secure future for her due to her academic performance and her intelligence, until one day she goes to a doctor's visit that confirms her suspicions: she's pregnant. Not only does this fact make Anne feel that her academic career is faltering, but she doesn't feel ready to be a mother - the problem? In those years abortion was illegal in France and even mentioning the idea or providing any kind of help for a woman to have an abortion was grounds for imprisonment.

Hace algunos años agregué L'événement a mi lista de pendientes, no recuerdo por qué, y luego, cuando me leí el libro en el que se basa pensé que le había llegado el momento. Sin embargo, nuevamente por una razón desconocida para mí, no la vi entonces y quedó relegada al olvido hasta que revisando las historias disponibles actualmente en Max (HBO) me topé nuevamente con el close-up de ese rostro y esos profundos ojos azules que me guardaban otra sorpresa que les contaré más adelante. L'événement es una película francesa, dirigida por Audrey Diwan y co escrita por ella junto a Marcia Romano a partir del libro del mismo nombre de la autora ganadora del Premio Nobel de Literatura Annie Ernaux. La historia está protagonizada por Anamaria Vartolomei, una actriz francesa de origen rumano que interpreta lo que sería la versión joven de Ernaux, pues el libro, al igual que toda la obra de la autora, está basada en su propia vida. Corren los años sesenta en Francia y Anne (Vartolomei), una chica de una población rural, acude a la ciudad para asistir a clases. Anne es brillante y quiere dedicarse a la literatura, lo que pareciera ser un futuro seguro para ella debido a su rendimiento académico y a su inteligencia, hasta que un día acude a una visita médica que le confirma sus sospechas: está embarazada. Este hecho no sólo hace que Anne sienta tambalear su carrera académica sino que no se siente lista para ser madre, ¿el problema? En esos años el aborto era ilegal en Francia y tan siquiera mencionar esa idea o brindar algún tipo de ayuda para que una mujer abortara era motivo de encarcelamiento.

So Anne finds herself at a crossroads. Final exams are approaching, her belly is growing larger with each passing day, making her abortion difficult, and she can't find help because how can she ask without giving herself away? Who can she trust to help her without condemning her? Anne has two good friends, Hélène and Brigitte, but like many other girls of her time and environment, they are virgins (or claim to be), and sex and everything related to it is taboo. Furthermore, abortion is a crime. The calendar ticks by, Anne's anxiety grows, and we accompany her on her journey.

Entonces Anne se ve a sí misma en una encrucijada. Los exámenes finales están cerca, su vientre crece más a cada día que pasa, dificultando su intención de abortar, y no puede encontrar ayuda porque ¿cómo preguntar sin delatarse? ¿en quien confiar que la ayude sin condenarla? Anne tiene dos buenas amigas, Hélène y Brigitte, pero como muchas otras chicas de la época y de su entorno, ellas son vírgenes (o dicen serlo) y el sexo y todo lo relacionado con el tema es tabú. The Book | El libro

Today abortion is legal in many countries, but it's still a condemned and forbidden practice in many others. The debate as to whether or not the fetus is a human being or at what point in gestation it can be considered a living being is a never-ending conversation. Both sides have their arguments and many people make sense of one or the other. That's why it is a topic that has not lost its relevance and although this story takes place in France in the sixties, there are other films that reflect similar situations in more modern contexts, such as the Romanian 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile (4 months, 3 weeks & 2 days) set in the eighties or the independent film Never Rarely Sometimes Always which, because it's set in a society where abortion is legal, is no less dramatic than the previous ones. L'événement is a film directed by a woman, written by two women, based on the memoirs of a woman and starring another woman, which deals with a subject that may be of greater interest to female audiences, but which - in my opinion - should be of interest to all of us. In addition, while it sometimes happens that there are films that seek to deal with this type of subject in order to appear or stand out from the rest, leaving the greatest weight in the choice of the subject and not in its realization, Audrey Diwan's film is a jewel. Not for nothing did it reap several awards, including the all-important Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The direction, the cinematography, the script, everything is very well done and the film succeeds in communicating Anne's personal drama with great strength and verisimilitude.

Hoy día el aborto es legal en muchos países, pero aún es una práctica condenada y prohibida en muchos otros. El debate de si el feto es o no un ser humano o en qué momento de la gestación se le puede considerar un ser vivo es una conversación de nunca acabar. Uno y otro lado tienen sus argumentos y a mucha gente le hacen sentido unos u otros. Por eso es un tema que no ha perdido vigencia y aunque esta historia transcurre en la Francia de los años sesenta, hay otras películas que reflejan situaciones parecidas en contextos más modernos, como la rumana 4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile (4 meses, 3 semanas & 2 días) ambientada en los años ochenta o la película independiente Never Rarely Sometimes Always que no por ambientarse en una sociedad en donde el aborto es legal es menos dramática que las anteriores. L'événement es una película dirigida por una mujer, escrita por dos mujeres, basada en las memorias de una mujer y protagonizada por otra mujer, que trata un tema que puede ser de mayor interés para el público femenino, pero que - en mi opinión - debería interesarnos a todos. Además, si bien a veces sucede que hay películas que buscan tratar este tipo de temas para figurar o destacar sobre el resto, dejando el mayor peso en la elección del tema y no en su realización, la película de Audrey Diwan es una joya. No por nada cosechó diferentes premios, entre ellos el importantísimo León de Oro en el festival de Venecia. La dirección, la fotografía, el guion, todo está muy bien ejecutado y la cinta logra comunicarnos el drama personal de Anne con mucha fuerza y verosimilitud.

Key in that last, of course, is the performance of Anamaria Vartolomei who was in her early twenties when L'événement was filmed but who put on a display of talent in every scene to portray the different emotions and how physically demanding it was to play certain scenes. Specifically I can think of two - though there are more - that are uncomfortably real. Not for nothing was she awarded the César for Best Female Revelation, an award that has also been won by actresses such as Audrey Tautou, Mélanie Laurent and one of my favorites, Adèle Exarchopoulos.

En eso último, por supuesto, es clave la actuación de Anamaria Vartolomei que tenía poco más de veinte años cuando se grabó L'événement pero que hizo un despliegue de talento en cada escena para representar las diferentes emociones y lo físicamente demandante que fue interpretar ciertas escenas. Concretamente puedo pensar en dos - aunque hay más - que resultan incómodamente reales. No por nada le entregaron el César a Mejor revelación femenina, premio que han ganado también actrices de la talla de Audrey Tautou, Mélanie Laurent y una de mis favoritas, Adèle Exarchopoulos.

The other surprise that Anamaria's blue eyes in the poster of this movie held for me also has to do with what I mentioned about seeing a movie at one time and not another. If I had seen that movie when it came out, or last year, or a couple of months ago, it wouldn't have been the same. And the thing is, as the story progressed and I was marveling at Vartolomei's performance, his image began to look more and more familiar to me. I thought I was confused, that I obviously remembered her from years ago from the movie poster, but there was something else. Part of me felt that I hadn't seen her before and another part of me felt a certain familiarity. I didn't get over the doubt until I consulted the film's credits and found that the star of L'événement had stolen my heart in another, more recent film I saw a few weeks ago: Mickey 17. I ask those of you who have seen Bong Joon-ho's most recent film: do you remember that brown-haired, blue-eyed security agent who was in a very close relationship with another agent? Yes, that one: Kai. Didn't you fall in love with her, especially towards the second half of the movie? Well, the character of Kai was played by Anamaria Vartolomei, as was Haydée in the latest adaptation of Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, which I haven't seen, but just jotted down on my list to see this year. Youth, beauty and talent, can you ask for more? La otra sorpresa que guardaban para mí los ojos azules de Anamaria en el poster de esta película también tiene que ver con lo que mencionaba de ver una película en un momento y no en otro. Si hubiera visto esa película cuando salió, o el año pasado, o hace un par de meses, no habría sido lo mismo. Y es que, a medida que avanzaba la historia y me iba maravillando con la interpretación de Vartolomei, su imagen comenzaba a parecerme cada vez más conocida. Creí que me había confundido, que obviamente la recordaba de hace años del poster de la película, pero había algo más. Una parte de mí sentía que no la había visto antes y otra parte de mí sentía cierta familiaridad. No salí de la duda hasta que consulté los créditos de la película y encontré que la protagonista de L'événement me había robado el corazón en otra película, más reciente, que vi hace algunas semanas: Mickey 17. Les pregunto a quienes hayan visto la cinta más reciente de Bong Joon-ho: ¿recuerdan a esa agente de seguridad de cabello castaño y ojos azules que tenía una relación muy estrecha con otra agente? Sí, esa: Kai. ¿No se enamoraron de ella, especialmente hacia la segunda mitad de la película? Bueno, el personaje de Kai fue interpretado por Anamaria Vartolomei, al igual que el de Haydée en la última adaptación de Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, la cual no he visto, pero acabo de apuntar en mi lista para ver este año. Juventud, belleza y talento, ¿se puede pedir más?
