Locke (2013): minimalist success or cinematographic failure? | ¿éxito minimalista o fracaso cinematográfico?

Starring Tom Hardy | Protagonizada por Tom Hardy

There are films that are indisputable cinematographic gems. Nobody doubts the quality of The Godfather, for example. And on the other hand, there are also failures on the big screen (of which I will not give examples to avoid hurting possible sensitive defenders). But there are also some films, like this one, that divide opinion and that remain in a diffuse intermediate zone between success and failure.

Before I saw Locke I didn't know anything about the plot. The only thing I knew was that the protagonist was Tom Hardy (one of my favorite actors) and that he was driving a vehicle because that is what you see on the poster; and that was enough for me to want to see it. I was unaware, until the beginning of the film, that Tom Hardy would be the only actor shown on the screen for 82 minutes and that except for the first shots at the beginning, he would spend the entire film aboard his vehicle. Yes, suddenly there are some shots of the city, of the highway (because he's driving), we see the reflection of a traffic light, the night lights of a tunnel or public lighting, the signs on the road, some other vehicles, but the 90% of the film, maybe more, I don't know, I would have to time it to give a more exact percentage, are scenes of Tom Hardy on board his vehicle thinking, talking on the phone, checking some things, reliving ghosts from his past (which we don't see) or just driving. If seeing Tom Hardy's face for almost an hour and a half is enough for you, then go ahead and watch Locke (just as James Franco fans enjoyed 127 hours more than the general public), but if you need more than that, let me explain a little what it is about.

Tom Hardy plays Iván Locke, a renowned contractor in charge of the construction of one of the largest buildings in European history (he lives in England) who during his career has been characterized by his responsibility, compliance and diligence when coordinating the works of the companies for which he works. Or at least that's how it was until the night that we're told on the film.

Because Iván, on the eve of the concrete pouring for the foundations of that 55-story building that they are building, the very night that he should be personally supervising the site and coordinating everything related to the reception of the trucks that will pour the concrete, the municipal permits for the closure of the streets, the coordination of the workers and many more details, that same night when his wife and children are waiting for him at home to watch a soccer game together, Iván quits his job because he has to drive somewhere else, not home, for an hour and a half to do what he feels is his duty. Logically, the questions begin to arise, where is he going? who is he going to see? What is it that he has to do that he considers so important that he not only leaves his family waiting but also risk his job on the eve of such an important construction? Little by little the answers to these questions begin to emerge and we build the plot and the psychology of the character.

I don't want to reveal more of the things that happen because in those revelations the whole plot of the movie unfolds, so I don't want to spoil the party for those who want to see it. But as I pointed out earlier, there is no other person on screen for the entire movie. No one. Zero. Not a photograph, not a pedestrian crossing the street, not a traffic cop. Which is not to say that there aren't other characters in the story. Yes there are. It's just that these characters are introduced to the story through phone calls that Iván has with them all the way. Talk to one, hang up, they call, answer, call back. From his driver's seat, Iván is facing various situations and talking to several people in parallel about different things, all through his cell phone, connected to the sound of his vehicle to be able to drive hands-free.

They are Katrina, his wife; Eddie and Sean, their children; Gareth and Donal, who work with Iván; Bethan, a woman who at first we don't know what she paints in all this; and a couple of other characters. That is all. These few voices join Locke to tell us a story that in turn allows us to discover who the protagonist is. When classifying this film, I would say that it is a psychological drama. There are traits of Iván's personality that are emerging and that we can understand why he's doing what he's doing. He's a determined person who wants to do what he thinks is right and is willing to take the consequences for it. Ghosts from the past condition this sense of righteousness and although it sounds selfish and cold, he doesn't do it for anyone but himself. Although he goes to another place and away from the people who make up his life, Ivan Locke doesn't run away, he only goes to meet himself.

This movie was written and directed by Steven Knight, the creator of the acclaimed Peaky Blinders series, in an attempt - I believe - at a minimalist road movie. It's true that if you concentrate on the film and are patient, you can enjoy the revelations that follow, but how many will this film seduce enough? It is inevitable to think of the 2018 Danish film Den skyldige (The Guilty) (also with this minimalism and with characters that are only voices) and make comparisons in which - in my opinion - the Nordic film comes out better. For those who have seen this movie, do you think it was missing something? Or is it fine as it is? Do you consider it to be a successful experiment or a cinematographic failure? I read you in the comments.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película
