If you want to watch comfortable movies, watch Netflix. For good series and some classics, Max. For independent films or international cinema, MUBI. But if you want to discover films that are rare, little visible, censored, forgotten, non-existent in streaming format or currently unavailable, then sign up for a Cine Club in your city, preferably one that takes place in a small, independent theater, like the one I joined at the Centro de Cine y Creación in Santiago called “Watch DVDs For Real”.

Si quieren ver películas cómodas, vean Netflix. Para buenas series y algunos clásicos, Max. Para películas independientes o cine internacional, MUBI. Pero si quieren descubrir películas raras, poco visibilizadas, censuradas, olvidadas, inexistentes en formato de streaming o no disponibles actualmente, entonces inscríbanse en algún Cine Club en su ciudad, de preferencia que se lleve a cabo en una sala pequeña e independiente, como ese en el que me sumé en el Centro de Cine y Creación en Santiago llamado "Ve DVD de Verdad".

The name of the club is logical: the films are reproduced from a DVD copy. But the interesting thing is the curatorship, that selection of titles that had little or no diffusion in the country and that are generally cult works. On this occasion a film was screened that I knew nothing about, but that impressed me in many ways. The actions of Lust, Caution take place in Shanghai in the early period of World War II, when the city was occupied by the Japanese. There's a non-linear handling of time that begins in 1942, but takes us back four years to show us how the characters got there. On one side we have Mrs. Mak, a young, rich, attractive and sophisticated woman who befriends a group of women in Shanghai, one of whom is the wife of a senior local police officer, Mr. Yee. Gradually, a dangerous and forbidden attraction begins to emerge between the master of the house and this new friend of his wife; however, both are hiding things. Despite belonging to the police force of a city invaded by a foreign power, Yee doesn't fight the Japanese. On the contrary: he's a collaborator of the Japanese to eliminate the resistance cells fighting for the end of the occupation and the recovery of his country. Mrs. Mak, for her part, doesn't even have that name. Her name is Wong Chia Chi and she's a member of the resistance. Her mission is to lure the officer so that the locals can take care of the traitor.

El nombre del club responde a lo lógico: las películas son reproducidas desde una copia en DVD. Pero lo interesante es la curaduría, esa selección de títulos que tuvieron poca o ninguna difusión en el país y que por lo general son obras de culto. En esta oportunidad se proyectó una película de la que no sabía nada, pero que me impresionó de muchas maneras. Las acciones de Lust, Caution suceden en Shanghái en el período inicial de la segunda guerra mundial, cuando la ciudad estaba ocupada por los japoneses. Hay un manejo no lineal del tiempo que empieza en 1942, pero que nos retrocede cuatro años para mostrarnos cómo han llegado allí los personajes. De un lado tenemos a la Sra. Mak, una mujer joven, rica, atractiva y sofisticada que entabla amistad con un grupo de mujeres en Shanghái de las cuales una es la esposa de un alto cargo de la policía local, el Sr. Yee. Poco a poco, comienza a surgir una atracción peligrosa y prohibida entre el amo de casa y esta nueva amiga de su esposa; sin embargo, ambos ocultan coas. A pesar de pertenecer a la policía de una ciudad invadida por una potencia extranjera, Yee no combate a los japoneses. Al contario: es un colaborador de los nipones para eliminar las células de la resistencia que lucha por el fin de la ocupación y la recuperación de su país. Por su parte la Sra. Leaving aside the particulars of the case, we've seen this story other times: the female spy who must romance the enemy officer in order to ambush him. Red Sparrow, Raazi, Black Book, are just three examples of this core, but what makes Lust, Caution a superior film and elevates it to cult film, auteur cinema and masterpiece, is the mix of talent and artistry of those involved and the intensity - sometimes restrained, sometimes not so much - of its script, written by James Schamus and Wang Hui-Ling from a story by Eileen Chang.

Dejando de lado las particularidades del caso, hemos visto esta historia otras veces: la mujer espía que debe enamorar al oficial enemigo para emboscarlo. Red Sparrow, Raazi, Black Book, son apenas tres ejemplos de este núcleo, pero lo que convierte a Lust, Caution en una película superior y la eleva a película de culto, cine de autor y obra maestra, es la mezcla de talento y arte de quienes participan y la intensidad - a veces contenida, otras no tanto - de su guion, escrito por James Schamus y Wang Hui-Ling a partir de una historia de Eileen Chang.

The main responsible for the genius film that is Lust, Caution is its director: Ang Lee, sound familiar? This Taiwanese director is one of the professionals with the highest rank in his work. Let's think that films as different as Sense and Sensibility, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Life of Pi and Brokeback Mountain were all directed by this genius. After receiving the Oscar for Best Director for the homosexual love story between Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, Lee was given total creative freedom to make the film he wanted and the result was Lust, Caution: 156 minutes of intrigue, eroticism, power plays, betrayals, deep and complex characters, violence, all captured by the lens of the mexican Rodrigo Prieto (Babel, Argo, Barbie, 21 Grams, Silence and Killers of the Flower Moon, among many others) and with music by two-time Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Shape of Water, Argo, The Grand Budapest Hotel, among others). With such a Dream Team behind the cameras, it was necessary to bring in top-notch actors, and so it was done. Wong Chia Chi was played by Tang Wei, the Chinese actress you probably met in Park Chan-wook's Decision to Leave and whom I fell in love with in Bi Gan's Long Day's Journey Into Night, but who ten years before shooting those two films had already stood out for her performance in Lust, Caution.

Este director taiwanés es uno de los profesionales con mayor rango en su trabajo. Pensemos que películas tan diferentes como Sense and Sensibility, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Life of Pi y Brokeback Mountain fueron todas dirigidas por este genio. Teniendo semejante Dream Team detrás de cámaras había que traer actores de primera línea y así se hizo. Wong Chia Chi fue interpretada por Tang Wei, la actriz china que seguramente conocieron en Decision to Leave de Park Chan-wook y de quien yo me enamoré en Long Day's Journey Into Night de Bi Gan, pero que diez años antes de grabar esas dos películas ya había sobresalido por su interpretación en Lust, Caution.

Mr. Yee was played by none other than Tony Leung, Wong Kar-wai's leading actor, with whom he collaborated in Happy Together, 2046, Chungking Express and the unforgettable In the Mood For Love, one of the best films in history. Like that romantic classic, Leung also lives in Lust, Caution a forbidden relationship, with implied, suggested beginnings and a lot of gestures to speak with the body and not with words. But the restraint of his character in that other film is forgotten in this one, especially after the first hour.

El Sr. Yee fue interpretado nada más y nada menos que por Tony Leung, el actor de cabecera de Wong Kar-wai, con quien colaboró en Happy Together, 2046, Chungking Express y la inolvidable In the Mood For Love, una de las mejores películas de la historia. A semejanza de ese clásico romántico, Leung también vive en Lust, Caution una relación prohibida, con inicios implícitos, sugeridos y mucha gestualidad para hablar con el cuerpo y no con las palabras. Pero la contención de su personaje en aquella otra película, se olvida en esta, especialmente después de la primera hora.

Scenes

Yee is a powerful man who lives in constant tension and takes things by force. For her part, Ms. Yak wants to penetrate that armor so that Yee will make a misstep that will allow the resistance to eliminate him. That mixture is like fire and gasoline, never better evidenced than in the sexual encounters of the two, scenes quite controversial for how graphic they are; one of them practically is a rape, although much shorter - that yes - than the remembered scene with Monica Bellucci in Irréversible. People who criticized Sean Baker for not using an intimacy coordinator in Anora are going to be infuriated when they see the sex scenes in Lust, Caution. But the best thing about the film is that it has these tremendously erotic scenes, which are not bad because they are controversial, on the contrary, but there are also violent sequences (a murder at the hands of multiple assassins is an outstanding example), some more romantic ones, dialogues that extol the homeland and freedom and an air of thriller in the purest style of Hitchcock, director to whom Ang Lee wanted to pay homage in this opportunity and he succeeded. Lust, Caution is a mixture of Vertigo with explicit sex, restrained passion and the exercise of power. It's true that there are some scenes that are not up to par with the rest and that the duration is somewhat excessive (it could have been at least 20 minutes shorter) but that doesn't detract from this film that won the Golden Lion and the award for best cinematography at the Venice Film Festival, have any of you seen this film? would you like to see it? Yee es un hombre poderoso que vive en constante tensión y que toma las cosas por la fuerza. Por su parte, la Sra. Yak quiere penetrar en esa coraza para que Yee dé un paso en falso que le permita a la resistencia eliminarlo. Esa mezcla es como fuego y gasolina, nunca mejor evidenciado que en los encuentros sexuales de ambos, escenas bastante polémicas por lo gráficas que resultan; una de ellas prácticamente es una violación, aunque mucho más breve - eso sí - que la recordada escena con Monica Bellucci en Irréversible. La gente que criticó a Sean Baker por no usar un coordinador de intimidad en Anora se va a infartar cuando vea las escenas sexuales de Lust, Caution. Pero lo mejor de la película es que tiene estas escenas tremendamente eróticas que no por polémicas resultan mal hechas, al contrario, pero además también hay secuencias violentas (un asesinato a manos de múltiples asesinos es un ejemplo destacado) algunas más románticas, diálogos que ensalzan la patria y la libertad y un aire de thriller al más puro estilo de Hitchcock, director al que Ang Lee quiso homenajear en esta oportunidad y lo consiguió. Lust, Caution es una mezcla de Vertigo con sexo explícito, pasión contenida y el ejercicio del poder. Es cierto que hay algunas escenas que no están a la altura del resto y que la duración es un tanto excesiva (podría haber sido cuando menos 20 minutos más breve) pero eso no desmerita a esta película que ganó el León de Oro y el premio a la mejor fotografía en el Festival de Venecia, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto esta película? ¿les gustaría verla?
