Nominated for an Oscar
Nominada a los premios Oscar

The list of nominees for the next Academy Awards was recently published. Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the nominations with a total of 11 (which I love because since I saw it I said it was the best of last year), but the other films nominated are also very interesting and obviously I am planning to see the ones I haven't seen.

So I started with this little gem that I had on my list for a while. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a film directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp who also collaborated in the script and in the creation of the main character, Marcel, a tiny shell that, as the title of the film says he has shoes. In addition to his small size, Marcel's voice and his way of speaking reveal that he's very young (young for a shell), friendly and super observant; his one eye rests on everything around him and makes him reflect on important issues with wisdom and innocence. The film is made as a mockumentary in which Dean, a recently divorced filmmaker staying in an Airbnb (played by the Director himself) bumps into Marcel and decides to film him while he finds a place to move. With some doubts and a lot of curiosity, Marcel accepts without knowing very well the purpose and nature of these recordings, but little by little he feels more and more comfortable with Dean and the viewers begin to learn about the life of this little friend and fall in love with him and his worldview.

This is how we find out, from the very beginning, that Marcel lives with his grandmother Connie and that they are the only remaining members of the snail community that previously inhabited the house, when it belonged to a couple that separated a couple of years ago, what happened to the others? How have the two little snails, Marcel and his Grandma, managed to survive? The first part of the tape answers these questions.

As the documentary progresses, Dean and Marcel become friends, but with the focus always on the protagonist and his reflections. When part of the documentary is uploaded to the internet, Marcel goes viral and reflects on fame, celebrity, the vastness of the world and shows us that a group of people is not necessarily a community and that despite being surrounded by thousands of acquaintances, many times we can feel alone. I really liked how we get to know Marcel better and also Dean (who in most of the film is just a voice-over) and the way their friendship is built. Marcel is tender, noble, kind, respectful, but he is also very wise and from his tiny universe he leaves us incredible phrases that help us reflect on love, life, death, loneliness, nature, and how many times we take many things for granted or don't stop to think about the amount of wonders and miracles that surround us.

Jenny Slate, Dean's ex-wife, is the voice of Marcel and also helped build the character and write the script; Kirsten Lepore was in charge of coordinating the stop motion animation to give life to the little shell and both women, along with the Director, are the main people responsible, within a much larger community, for having given us this little cinematic gem and this unforgettable character.

Even though Marcel is an animated creation, most of the movie is like a real documentary. The house, the streets, the spaces, are filmed as in a true documentary, so I don't know if that weighs on him when it comes to competing for the golden statuette for Best Animated Film (the other films are completely animated) because I don't know either what are the criteria of the Academy in these cases. What I do know is that everyone who decides to see Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is going to have a beautiful experience full of deep reflections and diverse emotions, laughter, joy, sadness, tenderness, mourning, tears and a valuable central message - if there is one that stands out above the rest - that invites us to realize that we are a small but important part of something bigger than ourselves. Monica Castillo of The Wrap said in a review that this film was "adorable and just lovely (...) In the end, it feels like the cinematic equivalent of a hug" and I agree with that comparison, so I invite you to hug this heartwarming story and let yourself be embraced by it, how many of you have already seen it? I read you in the comments.

Saludos.
