James Cameron, David Cronenberg, and Denis Villeneuve are three great film directors, and—although many don't know it—they're Canadian. Since their films are already acclaimed worldwide and we frequently see them in international theaters and with box office hits, most of us associate them with the United States and not with their home country. But, beyond them—and the profound stories of Xavier Dolan—what is Canadian cinema like? Well, to give you an idea, here's an independent, romantic, and honest film conceived and filmed in the far north of the American continent.

Como sus películas ya son celebradas mundialmente y los vemos con frecuencia en las carteleras internacionales y con éxitos de taquilla, la mayoría los asociamos con EEUU y no con su país natal. Pero, además de ellos - y de las profundas historias de Xavier Dolan - ¿cómo es el cine canadiense? Bueno, para que se hagan una idea acá les traigo una película independiente, romántica y honesta concebida y filmada lo más al norte del continente americano.

Written and directed by Kazik Radwanski and filmed in Toronto, Matt & Mara is a story centered on human relationships over time. Mara (Deragh Campbell) is a young creative writing professor at a university. Married for seven years to an experimental musician with whom she has a daughter, Mara's marriage has been difficult to cope with lately. Her husband seems to be more focused on his music than on his family, and Mara often feels that neither she understands him nor he understands her, as if there were a wall between them or a language barrier: words are not enough, or perhaps they speak different languages. Suddenly, one day Mara arrives at the university to teach a class and meets again with Matt (Matt Johnson) who - after several years of absence - has come to see her, taking advantage of the fact that he will be in town for a few weeks. In the years they have not seen each other, Matt has become a successful writer and a modern literary reference. Charismatic, free-spirited, somewhat intellectual and with a sharp humor, Matt reappears only for a visit - apparently - but their common interests and their past in common with Mara - they met in college - gradually tighten the bond between them, that which was always in a diffuse, confused, undefined terrain, what is now often called a situationship. Matt is not an ex-boyfriend, but neither is he just a friend, and even if he's sometimes a bit heavy or arrogant, he understands Mara well, he knows her and listens to her, which makes her still feel a little attracted to him.

Escrita y dirigida por Kazik Radwanski y filmada en Toronto, Matt & Mara es una historia centrada en las relaciones humanas a través del tiempo. Mara (Deragh Campbell) es una joven profesora de escritura creativa en una universidad. Casada desde hace siete años con un músico experimental con quien tiene una hija, últimamente el matrimonio de Mara ha sido difícil de llevar. Matt no es un ex novio, pero tampoco un simple amigo y aunque a veces resulte un tanto pesado o arrogante, entiende bien a Mara, la conoce y la escucha, lo que provoca que ella aún se sienta un poco atraída por él.

But it's one thing to have an open-ended relationship in your early twenties, being single and living a college life, and quite another to feel that unstable and volatile situation when you're in your early thirties, with a daughter, a marriage, and a career in which Mara is already beginning to build an excellent reputation. Now, it's also true that Matt reappears at a time when Mara needs some of the energy generated between them due to their past and their shared interests, something she hasn't felt with her husband for some time.

Pero una cosa es tener un relación indefinida al principio de los veinte años, estando solteros, haciendo vida universitaria, y otra muy distinta es sentir ese terreno inestable y volátil cuando se tienen treinta y pocos, una hija, un matrimonio y una carrera en la que ya Mara comienza a labrarse una excelente reputación. Ahora bien, también es cierto que Matt reaparece en un momento en el que Mara necesita algo de la energía que se genera entre ellos debido a su pasado y a sus intereses comunes, algo que desde hace algún tiempo no siente con su esposo.

That's basically the core of the film's plot, but one of my favorite things about the story of Matt & Mara is the screenplay. There are long sequences that show us the main characters chatting over a cup of coffee, riding in the same car headed somewhere, or walking the streets of Toronto, very much in the vibe of Before Sunrise. It's true that Jesse and Celine's dynamism is a bit more fun and at first glance much more romantic, probably due to their age, the magic of the train ride and the charms of Vienna, but just as it happens with them in Linklater's film, in this film by Kazik Radwanski the conversations between its protagonists serve to analyze not only their own story but also other situations and broader themes, social behaviors, daily concerns, friendship, grief, parenting, emotional responsibility and that ever-present and ever-changing thing people call modern times. Despite looking very serious, Matt & Mara make a charming onscreen couple. They don't have the romantic, effusive gestures of other movie couples, but they do have a palpable connection and an enviable way of reading each other that can seem as frightening as it is attractive, for exposing one's vulnerability is one of the hardest things to do, but also one of the most binding between two people, and I think it played a key role in that that the two actors had worked together before - in another film by the same director called Anne at 13,000 Ft. - and were also allowed to improvise dialogue in some of the scenes.

Básicamente ese es el centro de la trama de la película, pero una de mis cosas favoritas de la historia de Matt & Mara es el guion. Hay secuencias largas que nos muestran a los protagonistas conversando mientras toman una taza de café, van en un mismo auto rumbo a alguna parte o caminan por las calles de Toronto, muy en la vibra de Before Sunrise. Es cierto que el dinamismo de Jesse y Celine resulta algo más divertido y a primera vista mucho más romántico, probablemente debido a su edad, a la magia del viaje en tren y a los encantos de Viena, pero al igual que ocurre con ellos en la película de Linklater, en esta cinta de Kazik Radwanski las platicas entre sus protagonistas sirven para analizar no sólo su propia historia sino también otras situaciones y temas más amplios, comportamientos sociales, preocupaciones cotidianas, la amistad, el duelo, la crianza, la responsabilidad afectiva y esa cosa siempre presente y cambiante que la gente llama los tiempos modernos. A pesar de parecer muy serios, Matt & Mara hacen una pareja encantadora en pantalla. No tienen los gestos románticos y efusivos de otras parejas del cine, pero sí una conexión palpable y una envidiable forma de leerse mutuamente que puede parecer tan atemorizante como atractiva, pues exponer la propia vulnerabilidad es una de las cosas más difíciles de hacer, pero también una de las más vinculantes entre dos personas y creo que en eso jugó un papel clave el hecho de que ambos actores hubieran trabajado juntos antes - en otra película del mismo director llamada Anne at 13,000 Ft. - y que se les permitiera también improvisar diálogos en algunas de las escenas.

I confess that I hadn't had my eye on anything independent Canadian cinema, but once again it was MUBI's film base that suggested a film to me that if it weren't for this incredible platform I wouldn't have known about. I hadn't heard anything about the director, the actors, or the film, until the image appeared on my MUBI home screen and after reading the synopsis and the Why watch it that they always write to argue in favor of each story, I was convinced that I had to give it a chance.

Confieso que no tenía en la mira nada de cine canadiense independiente, pero una vez más ha sido la base de películas de MUBI la que me ha sugerido una película que de no ser por esta increíble plataforma no habría conocido. No había oído nada del director, ni de los actores, ni de la película, hasta que apareció la imagen en mi pantalla de inicio de MUBI y tras leer la sinopsis y el ¿Por qué verla? que siempre redactan para argumentar en favor de cada historia, me convencí de que tenía que darle una oportunidad.

Now, just because I hadn't heard anything about the film doesn't mean it hadn't been talked about, in fact Matt & Mara was included in last year's Canada's Top Ten list, compiled by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and has three nominations for the Canadian Screen Awards to be presented next June. It's true that these nominations are in technical categories (Costumes, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing), but that doesn't detract from the quality of the other aspects of the film. So, who to recommend this film to? I would say to fans of romantic films, long talks, lovers of Before Sunrise and Past Lives, but also to those who enjoy independent films, stories with few characters and short films (this one is about 80 minutes long). Now, if you're not so romantic, but you're curious to discover Canadian cinema, here are some recommendations: for fans of suspense, Saw and Stephen King, I recommend Summer of '84 and the cult gem Cube; for those who love documentaries or raw true stories, Sugarcane; for those who prefer dramas with adults and diseases, The Sweet Hereafter or the touching Away from her; and for thriller lovers I suggest two gems by Denis Villeneuve, Polytechnique with its black and white cinematography and the celebrated Incendies which has unforgettable scenes and unexpected plot twists, what Canadian film have you seen that you would like to recommend me? would you like to see Matt & Mara? have you seen it? Ahora bien, el que yo no hubiera oído nada de la película no quiere decir que no se hubiera hablado de ella, de hecho Matt & Mara fue incluida en la lista del Canada's Top Ten del año pasado, compilado por el Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) y cuenta con tres nominaciones para los Canadian Screen Awards a entregarse el próximo mes de Junio. Es cierto que estas nominaciones son en categorías técnicas (Vestuario, Edición de Sonido y Mezcla de Sonido), pero eso no desmerita la calidad de los otros aspectos de la película. Entonces, ¿a quién recomendar esta película? yo diría que a los fanáticos de las películas románticas, de las pláticas largas, a los amantes de Before Sunrise y Past Lives, pero también a quienes disfrutan del cine independiente, de las historias con pocos personajes y las películas cortas (esta dura unos 80 minutos). Ahora bien, si no son tan románticos, pero les da curiosidad descubrir el cine canadiense, les dejo algunas recomendaciones: a los fanáticos del suspenso, de Saw y Stephen King les recomiendo Summer of '84 y la joya de culto Cube; para los amantes de los documentales o de historias reales y crudas, Sugarcane; a quienes prefieren los dramas con personas adultas y enfermedades, The Sweet Hereafter o la conmovedora Away from her; y para los amantes de los thrillers les sugiero dos joyas de Denis Villeneuve, Polytechnique con su fotografía en blanco y negro y la celebrada Incendies que tiene escenas inolvidables e inesperados plot twists, ¿qué película canadiense han visto que me quieran recomendar? ¿les llama la atención ver Matt & Mara? ¿la han visto?
