When people ask me, I say yes, I like going to the cinema and watching films at home, but I think that's an understatement for what films really mean to me. Not only because I feel a very strong connection to all these stories or because I thoroughly enjoy being in a movie theater and following a story on the big screen, but because I did the math, and throughout 2025 I watched the absurd amount of 205 films, 205! Strictly speaking, five of them were short films of less than twenty minutes each, but even so, we're talking about 200 films, more than one every two days throughout the year. That's a lot.

Cuando la gente me pregunta digo que sí, que a mí me gusta ir al cine y ver películas en casa, pero creo que es una declaración muy débil para lo que realmente significan los films para mí. No sólo porque siento una conexión muy fuerte con todas estas historias o porque disfruto muchísimo estar en una sala de cine y seguir una historia en pantalla gigante, sino porque hice las cuentas y durante todo 2025 vi la absurda cantidad de 205 películas, ¡205! En estricto rigor, cinco de ellas fueron cortometrajes de menos de veinte minutos cada uno, pero aún así estamos hablando de 200 películas, más de una cada dos días durante todo el año. Es muchísimo.

Choosing my five or ten favorite stories from two hundred is a crazy idea. How could I do it? What criteria would I use to compare them and then rank them? No, impossible. The most I thought I could do, and it was still incredibly difficult, was to choose about fifty of the ones I liked best and then try to give special mention to the twenty-five that I enjoyed the most or that surprised me for some reason. To be fair to the competition, I decided not to include in my selection those films I already knew and rewatched this year. Gems like La La Land, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Kill Bill, Frances Ha, Interstellar, and Before Sunrise are among my all-time favorites, and if I included them, they'd end up in my Top 10 every year I watch them, so those don't count. What does count are the films I watched more than once this year. Movies like F1, Hot Milk, and Materialists were stories I enjoyed first on the big screen and then on streaming, so I counted them twice each because I watched them that many times, and the experience at home versus in a theater is different. Of the 203 films I watched this year, roughly 60 were in a movie theater, either a franchise or a local cinema, or at a festival, among which I particularly enjoyed Femcine and the film series at the Catholic University. I watched all the others at home, and of those, around 50 were on MUBI, so it remains my favorite streaming platform and the one that continues to delight me the most with its offerings.

Escoger de entre dos centenares de historias mis cinco o diez favoritas es una idea descabellada, ¿cómo podría hacerlo? ¿qué criterios usaría para compararlas y luego para ordenarlas en un ranking? No, imposible. Lo más que pensé que podía hacer, y de todas formas me costó muchísimo, fue escoger unas cincuenta de las que más me gustaron y allí tratar de hacer mención especial a las veinticinco que más disfruté o que me sorprendieron por alguna razón. Para ser justo con la competencia, he decidido no considerar en la elección esas películas que conocía de antes y que volví a ver este año. Joyas como La La Land, Portrait of a Lady On Fire, Kill Bill, Frances Ha, Interstellar o Before Sunrise están entre mis favoritas de todos los tiempos y si las tomo en cuenta van a terminar en el Top 10 cada año en que las vea, así que esas no cuentan. Lo que sí cuentan son esas películas que vi más de una vez en el año. Cintas como F1, Hot Milk o Materialists fueron historias que disfruté primero en la gran pantalla y luego en streaming, así que las conté dobles cada una porque las vi ese número de veces y la experiencia en casa o en la sala de cine es diferente. Del total de los 203 films que vi en el año, más o menos 60 los vi en alguna sala de cine, o bien de cadena o de barrio, o en algún festival de entre los que disfruté mucho el Femcine o los ciclos de la Universidad Católica. Todas las demás las vi en casa y de todas ellas, alrededor de 50 las vi en MUBI, así que esa sigue siendo mi plataforma de streaming favorita y la que sigue encantándome más con sus propuestas.

There were thrillers, action films, Chilean cinema, comedies, documentaries, classics, movies from the nineties, but above all, a lot of drama and international cinema—those moving stories from the most remote corners of the world. I started the year with a German film series and watching the Oscar-nominated movies I had on my list; and some of them managed to survive the year and remain among my favorites at the end of 2025, so now I'll tell you which were the 25 films I liked the most out of those I saw in the last year.

Hubo thrillers, películas de acción, cine chileno, comedia, documentales, clásicos, cintas de los años noventa, pero sobre todo mucho drama y cine internacional, de esas historias conmovedoras de los rincones más alejados del mundo. Comencé el año con un ciclo de cine alemán y viendo las películas que tenía pendientes de entre las nominadas al Oscar; y algunas de ellas lograron sobrevivir el año y mantenerse entre mis favoritas al cierre del 2025, así que ahora les diré cuáles fueron las 25 cintas que más me gustaron de las que vi los últimos doce meses.

Robbie Williams' story in Better Man was my favorite biopic of the year. Of all the documentaries I saw, the ones that affected me the most were the family film 78 Days about the Kosovo War, the unbelievable story of a legendary musician in Searching for Sugarman, and of course the heartbreaking No Other Land, which won the Oscar. My favorite musical was La Ola and from that country I also liked Denominación de origen (Designation of Origin), the story of the San Carlos sausage, which made me laugh as much as Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove or the irreverent Bottoms, which I'm still waiting to review. One Battle After Another and F1 were the best experiences I had on the big screen and that I would have liked to repeat in the same format because they are meant to be seen and heard again and again. Among the unexpected gems of my 2025, I highlight the narrative experiment Memories of a Burning Body, the devastating Bridge to Terabithia (one of the few that made me cry this year), very personal dramas like A Real Pain and The Hours, cult stories like Almost Famous, beautiful romances like The Bridges of Madison County, a classic that I was able to read and see on screen in a year in which I made some very exciting discoveries: the strength of Eva Victor, writer, director, producer and protagonist of Sorry, Baby; the charm of Paolo Sorrentino's cinema, of whom I saw several films this year, but I'll stick with my first encounter with him, Parthenope; and the acting talent of Kristine Kujath Thorp, central figure in two of my favorite films of the year: Ninjababy and Sick of Myself.

La historia de Robbie Williams en Better Man fue mi biopic favorita del año. De todos los documentales que vi, los que más me marcaron fueron la familiar 78 Days sobre la guerra de Kosovo, la inverosímil historia de un músico legendario en Searching for Sugarman y por supuesto la desgarradora No Other Land que se llevó el Oscar. Mi musical favorito fue La Ola y de ese país también me gustó Denominación de origen, historia de la longaniza de San Carlos con la que me reí tanto como con Dr. Strangelove de Kubrick o la irreverente Bottoms, pendiente de reseña por ahora. One Battle After Another y F1 fueron las mejores experiencias que tuve en la gran pantalla y que me hubiera gustado repetir en el mismo formato porque son para verse y oírse una y otra vez. Entre las joyas inesperadas de mi 2025 destaco el experimento narrativo Memories of a burning body, la demoledora Bridge to Terabithia (una de las pocas que me hizo llorar este año), dramas muy personales como A Real Pain y The Hours, historias de culto como Almost Famous, romances hermosos como The Bridges of Madison County, un clásico que pude leer y ver en patalle en un año en el que hice algunos descubrimientos muy emocionantes: la fuerza de Eva Victor, escritora, directora, productora y protagonista de Sorry, Baby; el cine de Paolo Sorrentino de quien vi varias películas en el año, pero me quedo con mi primer encuentro con él, Parthenope; y el talento interpretativo de Kristine Kujath Thorp, figura central de dos de mis películas favoritas del año: Ninjababy y Sick of Myself.

Closing out the year, I watched five of my favorite films of the year, all of which were curiously shortlisted for the Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category: the Cannes winner, It Was Just an Accident, the German film Late Shift, the Argentinian film Belén, the Taiwanese film The Left-Handed Girl (all pending review), and what I believe was my favorite film of the year, which I was able to see in theaters on Christmas Day: the Norwegian film Sentimental Value, an emotional story, very well told and beautifully performed by a luxurious cast.

Cerrando el año vi cinco de mis historias favoritas del año, curiosamente todas incluidas en la short list de los Oscars en la categoría de Mejor Película Internacional: la ganadora en Cannes It Was Just an Accident, la alemana Late Shift, la argentina Belén, la taiwanesa The Left-Handed Girl, todas pendientes de reseña y la que, creo, fue mi película del año y que pude ver en el cine el día de Navidad: la noruega Sentimental Value, una historia emotiva, muy bien contada y hermosamente interpretada por un elenco de lujo.

The fact that I've already named 25 films and left out gems like Mona Lisa Smile, Winter in Sokcho, The Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, Lust Caution, I'm Still Here, the cult anime Akira or the iconic The Princess Bride, one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen, only confirms the fact that 2025 was a year full of great cinema for me. Obviously, I renewed my MUBI subscription because it's the platform that best suits my tastes, to the point that I went to the cinema to see several of their premieres even though I knew they would be available for streaming a few weeks later (I'm waiting to see Sentimental Value again) and also, naturally, I'll continue going to the cinema a lot, keeping an eye out for the great films coming out, the Santiago film festivals (there's one in January that I'm really excited about because they're going to screen international premieres like The Secret Agent and Nouvelle Vague) and to see what surprises world cinema has in store for me during 2026. I don't think I'll manage to watch more movies than I did in 2025, but beyond the numbers, I know I'll be able to enjoy wonderful stories on the big screen, revisit classics, revisit my favorite movies, and discover new names, places, and films. Pensar que ya nombré las 25 películas y dejé por fuera joyas como Mona Lisa Smile, Winter in Sokcho, The Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, Lust Caution, I'm Still Here, el anime de culto Akira o la icónica The Princess Bride, una de las películas más entretnidas que he visto nunca, no hace sino confirmarme el hecho de que 2025 fue un año cargado de buen cine para mí. Obviamente renové mi suscripción a MUBI porque es la plataforma más afín a mis gustos, al punto de que fui al cine a ver varios estrenos suyos a pesar de que sabía que estarían disponibles en streaming algunas semanas después (estoy esperando Sentimental Value para volver a verla) y también, como es lógico, seguiré yendo mucho al cine, atento a las grandes películas que se vienen, a los festivales de cine de Santiago (ahora en Enero hay uno que me tiene emocionado porque van a proyectar estrenos internacionales como The Secret Agent y Nouvelle Vague) y a ver con qué me sorprende el cine del mundo durante el 2026. No creo que logre ver más películas que en este recién finalizado 2025, pero más allá de las cifras sé que podré disfrutar de maravillosas historias en la gran pantalla, visitar clásicos, revisitar mis comfort movies y descubrir nuevos nombres, rincones y obras cinematográficas. ¿y ustedes? ¿cuál fue su película favorita del año pasado?
