There Will Be Blood is one of the best films I've ever seen and one of my favorite performances by Daniel Day-Lewis, who once again gave a masterclass in acting in Phantom Thread alongside the talented Vicky Krieps. While I don't see the charm that people find in Punch: Drunk Love, I do have The Master and Magnolia on my to-watch list. And behind all of these productions is the same name: Paul Thomas Anderson.

There Will Be Blood es una de las mejores películas que he visto en mi vida y una de mis actuaciones favoritas de Daniel Day-Lewis quien volvió a dar una cátedra de actuación en Phantom Thread junto a la talentosísima Vicky Krieps; y aunque no veo el encanto que la gente encuentra en Punch-Drunk Love, sí tengo en mi lista The Master y Magnolia. Y detrás de todas estas producciones está el mismo nombre: Paul Thomas Anderson.

That's why I was paying close attention to the release of this director's new film, four years after his last release (Licorice Pizza, which I haven't seen yet). The only things I knew about the film were its title, One Battle After Another, and the fact that it starred Leonardo DiCaprio. Nothing else. I didn't see any trailers, I didn't read any synopsis, and I wanted to go to the theater completely unaware of what I was about to see. It was a great decision. It's hard to talk about the film's plot because it involves so many things, but I'll try to give a summary that isn't too detailed to avoid spoilers, but complete enough so you know what you're about to see when you get to it. The story begins with a revolutionary couple, Pat Calhoun (Di Caprio) and Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor), who openly fight the US government's immigration policies alongside a paramilitary group called the French 75. The first minutes of the film are filled with robberies, violence, gunfire, and the radical attempts of this group of men and women who take up arms in defense of their desire to build a better world. Pat has courage, but also doubts. In contrast, Perfidia, his partner and fellow fighter, is a true force of nature with unshakeable convictions and enviable determination. But despite this difference, or perhaps precisely because of it, they love each other completely. Until everything changes: they have a daughter.

Por eso estuve atento a la llegada a carteleras de la nueva película de este director después de cuatro años desde su última producción (Licorice Pizza, que no he visto aún). Lo único que sabía de la cinta era su título One Battle After Another y el hecho de que estaba protagonizada por Leonardo Di Caprio. Nada más. No vi ningún avance, no leí sinopsis y quise acudir al cine en completa ignorancia de lo que vería. Fue una gran decisión. Es difícil hablar de la trama de la película porque involucra muchas cosas, pero trataré de hacer un resumen que no sea muy detallado para evitar spoilers, pero lo suficientemente completo como para que sepan lo que verán al acercarse a ella. La historia parte con una pareja de revolucionarios, Pat Calhoun (Di Caprio) y Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor) quienes combaten abiertamente las políticas migratorios del gobierno de los EEUU junto a un grupo paramilitar llamado los French 75. Los primeros minutos de la cinta están llenos de asaltos, violencia, disparos y los intentos radicales de este grupo de hombres y mujeres que empuñan las armas defendiendo su deseo de construir un mundo mejor. Pat tiene agallas, pero también dudas. En cambio, Perfidia, su pareja y compañera de lucha, es una verdadera fuerza de la naturaleza con convicciones inamovibles y una determinación envidiable. Pero a pesar de esa diferencia, o quizás precisamente por eso, se aman con total entrega. Hasta que todo cambia: tienen una hija.

Pat wants to abandon the armed struggle and focus on safeguarding the life and future of her little Charlene. Perfidia, wrapped in a confusing cloud of emotions, decides to continue fighting in the streets, defying the authorities once again, and then, in the midst of one of her operations, she's captured by the army. With Perfidia as a prisoner, Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn) wants to track down and destroy the French 75, so Pat takes her daughter and flees, under a different identity, where no one and nothing can find them.

Pat quiere abandonar la lucha armada y pensar en salvaguardar la vida y el futuro de su pequeña Charlene. Perfidia, envuelta en una confusa nube de sentimientos, decide continuar la lucha en las calles, desafiando a las autoridades una vez más y entonces, en medio de una de sus operaciones, es capturada por el ejército. Con Perfidia como prisionera, el Coronel Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn) quiere rastrear y acabar con los French 75, así que Pat toma a su hija y huye, con otra identidad, hacia donde nada, ni el gobierno ni el pasado, pueda encontrarles.

In those few lines, I said more than I intended, but not even a quarter of what happens in the film. The plot blends thriller and action sequences with a very relevant social and political background, telling the story by combining the seriousness and drama of truly emotional and transcendent moments with wacky humor that lightens the emotional load at times. To achieve this, One Battle After Another not only boasts a great script by Anderson (loosely based on the novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon) but also relies on incredible performances from all its protagonists. Now with the Oscar validation that was denied him for many years, DiCaprio's talent is beyond dispute, and he manages to embody Pat Calhoun as a complex man, a fighter, brave and fearful at the same time, confused yet determined, serious and violent, but also very funny in several sequences. Alongside him, Teyana Taylor shines in the role of this revolutionary of body and soul who bursts onto the screen and into the lives of those who know her like a hurricane that shatters everything in its path. Benicio del Toro is also very funny, but key, as Sergio St. Carlos, and I liked seeing Regina Hall in a role that wasn't in a comedy. They all perform very well, but my highest praise goes to the other two characters and those who play them: Sean Penn and newcomer Chase Infiniti.

En esas pocas líneas dije más de lo que pretendía, pero ni una cuarta parte de todas las cosas que pasan en la película. La trama mezcla thriller y secuencias de acción con un trasfondo social y político muy vigente y cuenta la historia combinando la seriedad y el drama de momentos realmente emotivos y trascendentes con el humor disparatado que aligera la carga emocional por momentos. Para lograrlo, One Battle After Another no sólo cuenta con un gran guion a cargo de Anderson (vagamente basado en la novela Vineland de Thomas Pynchon) sino que además se apoya en actuaciones increíbles de todos sus protagonistas. Ya con la validación del Oscar que se le negó durante muchos años, el talento de Di Caprio está fuera de discusión y consigue encarnar en Pat Calhoun a un hombre complejo, luchador, valiente y temeroso a la vez, confundido, pero determinado, serio y violento, pero también muy divertido en varias secuencias. Junto a él, Teyana Taylor se luce en la piel de esa revolucionaria de cuerpo y alma que irrumpe en la pantalla y en la vida de quienes la conocen como un huracán que quiebra todo a su paso. Benicio del Toro también es muy divertido, pero clave, como Sergio St. Carlos y me gustó ver a Regina Hall en un papel que no fuera dentro de una comedia. Todos ellos lo hacen muy bien, pero mis mayores halagos van para los otros dos personajes y quienes los interpretan: Sean Penn y la debutante Chase Infiniti.

It's been a while since I saw Sean Penn act (I just found out he's in Licorice Pizza) and I don't remember ever seeing him in a similar role. Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw is a complex villain, with conflicting interests, narcissistic, servile, racist, who can be ruthless, but also has weaknesses. Aside from his acting chops, Penn looks very in shape in his role and I think it's one of the key points of the film, since on several occasions it's Lockjaw who drives the plot.

Tenía mucho tiempo sin ver actuar a Sean Penn (recién me enteré de que aparece en Licorice Pizza) y no recuerdo haberle visto un papel similar. El Coronel Steven J. Lockjaw es un villano complejo, con intereses contradictorios, narcisista, servil, racista, que puede ser despiadado, pero también tiene debilidades. Además de lo interpretativo, Penn se ve muy en forma en su papel y creo que es uno de los puntos claves de la película, ya que en varias oportunidades es Lackjaw quien impulsa la trama.

Chase Infiniti

As for Chase Infiniti, I wasn't familiar with her. This is her first feature film (she'd acted in TV series), and although she comes from a family outside the acting world, her destiny was marked from the cradle. Her full name is actually Chase Infiniti Payne, except she uses her middle name as if it were her last name, and after reading a bit, I learned that both of her names have cinematic origins. Chase comes from Nicole Kidman's character in Batman Forever, Chase Meridian, while Infiniti comes from Buzz Lightyear's iconic line in Toy Story. What better omen for her success in the industry? I think Chase plays her role very well, but beyond that, she has screen presence. Most of the time we see her running away, covered in dust, with her hair tossed by the wind, but she never ceases to be charming and magnetic. I can't wait to see what else this girl does in the coming years after this great debut alongside all these stars, Anderson included. I think One Battle After Another is the best film I've seen in theaters this year. It's true that it has some flaws and that the epilogue—those minutes after the film's climax—is a bit weak, but managing to hold the viewer's attention for 161 minutes and deliver a wild, thoughtful, funny, political, violent, and critical story, all at once, isn't for everyone. I don't know how it will do at the box office in the US, but it's still a great film, necessary in some way in these violent and absurd times. Who has seen it already? I'll read you in the comments.

En cuanto a Chase Infiniti, no la conocía. Este es su primer largometraje (había actuado en series de tv) y aunque procede de una familia que no pertenece al entorno actoral, su destino estuvo marcado desde la cuna. Su nombre completo es realmente Chase Infiniti Payne, sólo que ella ocupa su segundo nombre como si fuera su apellido y leyendo un poco me enteré que sus dos nombres tienen origen cinematográfico. Chase viene del personaje de Nicole Kidman en Batman Forever, Chase Meridian, mientras que Infiniti viene de la icónica frase del querido Buzz Lightyear en Toy Story, ¿qué mejor augurio para su éxito en la industria? Creo que Chase interpreta muy bien su papel, pero además de eso tiene presencia en pantalla. La mayor parte del tiempo la vemos huyendo, llena de polvo, con el cabello desordenado por el viento, pero nunca deja de resultar encantadora y magnética. No puedo esperar a ver qué más hace esta chica en los próximos años después de este gran debut junto a todas estas estrellas, Anderson incluido. Creo que One Battle After Another es la mejor película que he visto en cines este año. Es cierto que tiene algunos detalles y que el epílogo - esos minutos posteriores al clímax de la película - es un poco flojo, pero lograr mantener la atención del espectador durante 161 minutos y entregarle una historia salvaje, reflexiva, divertida, política, violenta y crítica, todo a la vez, no es para cualquiera. No sé cómo le irá en la taquilla en los EEUU, pero no deja de ser una gran película, necesaria de alguna manera en estos tiempos violentos y absurdos, ¿quiénes ya la han visto?
