Alright now I've seen the five films nominated for the Oscar for Best International Film, and if I left Society of the Snow for last it was because I use Netflix less than other platforms and I had taken advantage of going to the movies to see those that are not yet available in streaming. And although this movie has been floating around on the platform for months and many of you have already reviewed it, I would like to share my vision about one of the most viewed movies on Netflix in recent months.

Ahora sí, ya he visto las cinco películas nominadas al Oscar como Mejor Película Internacional, y si dejé La sociedad de la nieve para el final fue porque ocupo menos Netflix que otras plataformas y había aprovechado de ir al cine a ver aquellas que no están disponibles aún en streaming. Y aunque esta película lleva meses dando vueltas en la plataforma y muchos de ustedes ya la han reseñado me gustaría compartir mi visión sobre una de las películas más vistas de Netflix en los últimos meses.

As most will already know, Society of the Snow is a Spanish film - direction and production from that country - that tells a true story that occurred in the South of the American continent. On October 13th, 1972, a Uruguayan Air Force plane carrying mainly young rugby players heading to Santiago, Chile, crashed on the top of a huge mountain in the Andean mountain range. At the time the accident gave a lot to talk about, especially in the Southern Cone and all of us who grew up here, even if it was in other countries, have heard about the survivors of the Andes since our childhood. Because yes, some of the passengers survived despite the fact that the plane split in two, despite the freezing temperatures, the storms and the icy winds of the Andean mountain range, despite the injuries, the lack of food, some Of the 45 passengers survived. When the plane crashed there were 29 of them left, but as the days went by, the number decreased and searching for the remains of a plane in such a large area and where snow slides occur is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Trapped in one of the most inaccessible points on the planet, that rocky border between Chile and Argentina, the survivors had to do the unspeakable to be able to stay alive long enough until they were rescued, which, as we also know, occurred seventy-one days later.

Como la mayoría ya sabrá, La Sociedad de la nieve es una película española - dirección y producción proveniente de ese país - que relata una historia real ocurrida al Sur del continente americano. El 13 de Octubre de 1972, un avión de la Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya en donde viajaban principalmente jóvenes jugadores de rugby con rumbo a Santiago de Chile, se estrelló en la cima de una enorme montaña en la cordillera andina. En su momento el accidente dio mucho de qué hablar, en especial en el cono Sur y todos quienes crecimos aquí, aunque fuera en otros países, hemos oído hablar desde nuestra infancia de los sobrevivientes de los Andes. Porque sí, algunos de los pasajeros sobrevivieron a pesar de que el avión se partió en dos, a pesar de las gélidas temperaturas, las tormentas y los vientos helados de la cordillera andina, a pesar de las heridas, de la falta de comida, algunos de los 45 pasajeros sobrevivieron. Cuando el avión se estrelló quedaban 29 de ellos, pero conforme fueron pasando los días, el número fue disminuyendo y es que buscar los restos de un avión en una extensión tan grande y en donde ocurren deslizamientos de nieve es como buscar una aguja en un pajar. Atrapados en uno de los puntos más inaccesibles del planeta, esa frontera rocosa entre Chile y Argentina, los sobrevivientes tuvieron que hacer lo indecible para poder mantenerse con vida lo suficiente hasta ser rescatados, lo cual, como también sabemos, ocurrió setenta y un días más tarde.

However, within our collective memory, the accident was not the most tragic nor the most memorable. Nor the number of days that these people were in such inhospitable conditions. The most remembered, perhaps unfairly, is what they didn't want to do, which we all know they did, which was the only way to survive and which constitutes an experience from which one cannot emerge psychologically unscathed. And if I don't mention it it's not only because we know it but also out of some modesty and respect for those who were there.

Sin embargo, dentro de nuestra memoria colectiva, el accidente no fue lo más trágico ni lo más memorable. Tampoco la cantidad de días que estas personas estuvieron en unas condiciones tan inhóspitas. Lo más recordado, quizás injustamente, es eso que ellos no querían hacer, que todos sabemos que hicieron, que era la única forma de sobrevivir y que constituye una experiencia de la cual no se puede salir ileso psicológicamente. Y si no lo menciono no es sólo porque lo sabemos sino también por algo de pudor y respeto a quienes estuvieron allí.

And I think that, in that sense, the film is quite honorable. It's a tragic and dramatic story, with visually very strong scenes and I understand that it's a good example of what really happened. But where others could have been more graphic and sensational, Bayona is restrained, sensible and respectful, although always honest with the truth and the rawness of the story. The accident scene is tremendously impressive, the speed of the aircraft, the consequences of inertia, the blow and the result, it's impressive how that sequence shocks you. The performances are also very good, the landscapes are beautifully bleak and the script, adapted from Pablo Vierci's book, also flows well. And one of my favorite things is that, contrary to what Bayona did in The Impossible where Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland starred in a story based on the real experience of a Latin American family during the Thailand tsunami, to tell the story From Society of the Snow, Uruguayan actors were hired and the film was made in Spanish. I think that, in addition to the fact that it's a story that occurred in our continent and is known to all of us, makes it feel like a closer film, that we have seen it so much, and that we recommend it left and right in addition to wanting it win the Oscar because, although the film is Spanish, the heart of the story is South American.

Y creo que, en ese sentido, la película es bastante honrosa. Es una historia trágica y dramática, con escenas visualmente muy fuertes y tengo entendido que se trata de una buena muestra de lo que realmente ocurrió. Pero en donde otros hubieran podido ser más gráficos y amarillistas, Bayona es comedido, sensato y respetuoso, aunque siempre honesto con la verdad y con la crudeza de la historia. La escena del accidente es tremendamente impactante, la velocidad de la aeronave, las consecuencias de la inercia, el golpe y el resultado, es impresionante cómo esa secuencia te impresiona. Las actuaciones son muy buenas también, los paisajes hermosamente desoladores y el guión, adaptado del libro de Pablo Vierci también fluye de buena manera. Y una de mis cosas favoritas es que, contrario a lo que Bayona hizo en The Impossible en donde Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor y Tom Holland protagonizaron una historia basada en la experiencia real de una familia latinoamericana durante el tsunami de Tailandia, para contar la historia de La sociedad de la nieve se contrataron actores uruguayos y la película se hizo en español. Creo que eso, además de que se trata de una historia ocurrida en nuestro continente y conocida por todos nosotros, hace que la sintamos como una película más cercana, que la hayamos visto tanto, y que la recomendemos a diestra y siniestra además de querer que gane el Oscar porque, aunque la película es española, el corazón de la historia es sudamericano.

Now, personally, I thought it was a good movie, but it didn't wow me. One of the things I didn't enjoy was the voice-over of Numa (sort of like the protagonist of the story) talking about some things related to the characters or her personal life. In general I don't like voiceovers in movies, I think it's a convenient device that accentuates the inability of the director or the film to show something without the need for an explanation. And in addition to that, it happens to me with many Spanish films (as with novels by Spanish authors) that there are some scenes and especially phrases that clearly have the intention to shock, to hurt, to cling to people's memories and I think that has a hint of artificiality, so to speak. They are good phrases, they are well written, yes, but something resonates in them that makes them not feel completely natural, or that they are perceived as an excess of melodrama. And that happened to me with some passages of Society of the Snow However, I do consider that it's a tremendous film, the makeup is very impressive, the physical commitment of the actors, the editing and above all the story, how many of us would have survived in a situation like that? How many people in the history of the world can have had an experience like that? I think that from that impact and from a film that meets what is required, Spain seeks to win the Oscar for Best International Film, will it achieve it? What do you think? Ahora bien, en lo personal, me pareció una buena película, pero no me maravilló. Una de las cosas que no disfruté fue la voz en off de Numa (algo así como el protagonista de la historia) hablando de algunas cosas relativas a los personajes o a su vida personal. En general no me gustan las voces en off en las películas, creo que es un recurso cómodo que acentúa la incapacidad del director o de la película de mostrar algo sin la necesidad de una explicación. Y además de eso, me ocurre con muchas películas españolas (igual que con novelas de autores españoles) que hay algunas escenas y sobre todo frases a las que se le nota la intención de impactar, de herir, de aferrarse a la memoria de la gente y creo que eso se la de tintes de artificialidad, por llamarle de alguna manera. Son frases buenas, están bien escritas, sí, pero algo resuena en ellas que hace que no se sientan del todo naturales, o que se perciban como un exceso de melodrama. Y eso me ocurrió con algunos pasajes de La sociedad de la nieve Sin embargo, sí considero que es una tremenda película, el maquillaje es muy impactante, el compromiso físico de los actores, el montaje y sobre todo la historia, ¿cuántos habríamos sobrevivido en una situación así? ¿cuántas personas en la historia del mundo pueden haber tenido una experiencia como esa? Creo que desde ese impacto y de una película que cumple con lo requerido, España busca llevarse el Oscar a Mejor Película Internacional, ¿lo conseguirá?¿ustedes qué creen?
