This was one of the most anticipated films of the season due to its success with both critics and audiences. After winning two of its three Golden Globe nominations, The Secret Agent is shaping up to be one of the two favorites to win the Oscar for Best International Feature Film at the upcoming Academy Awards, where Brazil could make history. Written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and starring the excellent Wagner Moura, who won a Golden Globe for his performance, The Secret Agent is a Brazilian thriller set in the 1970s, during the years of the military dictatorship in Brazil. It tells the story of Marcelo (Moura), a man who travels alone from city to city to visit his young son. We immediately wonder, why don't they live together? Where is the mother? And especially, who is Marcelo? Little by little, and with great skill, the script answers all these questions, creating an increasingly suffocating and contradictory atmosphere. It's the days leading up to Carnival, a time for celebrating life and its pleasures, but also a turbulent time with nearly a hundred deaths, disappearances, torture, and political persecution. The 20th century was a historical period marked by authoritarian, corrupt, and abusive regimes that affected, at some point, almost every country on the continent, and Brazil was no exception. Against this backdrop, we see Marcelo return to Recife, his city, facing a terrible risk connected to his past, in which he crossed paths with a despicable figure close to power who now wants to destroy him completely for his own gain. I don't want to give away any plot details because the script is very well constructed and the revelations are always made at the most opportune moment, so I want you to be surprised, like me, when all that happens.

Escrita y dirigida por Kleber Mendonça Filho y protagonizada por un excelente Wagner Moura que se llevó el Globo de Oro por su actuación, The Secret Agent es un thriller brasilero ambientado en la década de los setenta, durante los años de la dictadura militar en Brasil. En ella encontramos a Marcelo (Moura), un hombre que viaja solo de una ciudad a otra para visitar a su pequeño hijo. De inmediato nos peguntamos, ¿por qué no viven juntos? ¿dónde está la madre? y en especial, ¿quién es Marcelo? Poco a poco y con mucha pericia, el guion nos va respondiendo todas estas preguntas y va configurando un ambiente cada vez más asfixiante y contradictorio. Son los días cercanos al carnaval, una época de celebración de la vida y los placeres, pero al mismo tiempo es una época turbulenta con casi un centenar de muertos en esos días, desaparecidos, torturas y persecuciones políticas. El siglo XX fue un período histórico marcado por regímenes autoritarios, corruptos y abusivos que afectaron, en algún momento, a casi todos los países del continente y Brasil no fue la excepción. En ese marco vemos entonces a Marcelo volver a Recife, su ciudad, enfrentando un terrible riesgo que tiene que ver con su pasado, en el cual se cruzó con un desagradable personaje cercano al poder que ahora quiere destruirlo completamente para beneficio propio. No quiero dar detalles de la trama porque el guion está muy bien construido y las revelaciones se hacen siempre en el momento más oportuno, así que quiero que se sorprendan, como yo, cuando todo eso ocurra.

What I do want to talk about, and can talk about, are the reasons why this film has been so well received and, in my opinion, can already be considered a contemporary classic of world cinema. It may be a Brazilian film and tell a local story, but it has a universal resonance because it touches on themes and situations with which we can all empathize and identify, or find echoes in the history of our own countries.

De lo que sí quiero y puedo hablar es de las razones por las cuales esta película ha sido tan bien recibida y, en mi opinión, ya puede considerarse un clásico contemporáneo de la cinematografía mundial. Y es que puede ser un película brasilera y puede contar una historia local, pero tiene una reverberación universal porque toca temas y situaciones con las que todos podemos empatizar e identificarnos o encontrar ecos en la historia de nuestros propios países.

There's a famous quote by Milan Kundera that always comes back to me in situations like this: "The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting" Memory matters. Stirring up the past and bringing to light misfortunes or turbulent times matters. We cannot forget the abuses committed. It is essential for the present and future of society that the memory of past mistakes remains alive. It's perhaps the only way to avoid repeating them. In cases like Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, literature and film continue to produce works related to their dictatorships, and I have heard testimonies from people who think that enough is enough. But I agree with Wagner Moura; it's important to talk about it. Judging by what we are seeing in the world today, the lesson is far from being learned, and although on paper there aren't as many dictatorial regimes in the region as there once were, many of their practices are characteristic of the authoritarianisms they themselves condemn. Therefore, preserving memory and spreading awareness of the dangers posed by these types of governments is now as necessary as ever.

Hay una frase muy famosa de Milan Kundera que siempre vuelve a mí en situaciones como esta: "La lucha del hombre contra el poder es la lucha de la memoria contra el olvido". La memoria importa. Revolver el pasado y sacar a la luz las desgracias o las épocas turbulentas, importa. No podemos olvidar los abusos cometidos. Es esencial para el presente y el futuro de la sociedad que se mantenga vigente el recuerdo de los errores cometidos. Es tal vez la única forma posible de no cometerlos otra vez. En casos como los de Argentina, Brasil y Chile, la literatura y el cine siguen produciendo obras relacionadas con sus dictaduras y he oído testimonios de personas que piensan que ya ha sido suficiente. Pero coincido con Wagner Moura, es importante hablarlo. A juzgar por lo que estamos viendo hoy en el mundo, la lección está lejos de ser aprendida y aunque sobre el papel no existen tantos regímenes dictatoriales a cargo de países en la región como los hubo alguna vez, muchas de sus prácticas son propias de los autoritarismos que ellos mismos condenan. Entonces, preservar la memoria y hacer una tarea de difusión de los peligros que entrañan este tipo de gobiernos es ahora tan necesario como siempre.

Then we have a brilliant mise-en-scène, recreating not only a country but an era. The choice of film crews, locations, the color palette to give that retro feel, the attention to detail, and the narrative resources employed, such as television, newspapers, and film—all working together to build an atmosphere that feels real—works very well. Even local folklore and superstition are present in the film, and although that aspect initially put me off, I think it plays an important role in portraying that society and that time.

Luego tenemos una puesta en escena brillante, recreando no solamente un país sino una época. La elección de los equipos de filmación, las locaciones, la paleta de colores para dar ese toque retro, la atención a los detalles y los recursos narrativos empleados como la televisión, el periódico o el cine, todo puesto al servicio de construir una atmósfera que se sienta real, funciona muy bien. Incluso, el folclore y la superstición local están presentes en la cinta y aunque esa parte me causó cierto rechazo al inicio, creo que juega un papel importante al momento de retratar esa sociedad y esa época.

Finally, the performances are high quality, especially Wagner Moura's, who is also nominated for an Oscar (although my favorite in the category is DiCaprio), and this year Brazil could make history. In the entire history of the Oscars, only eight times has a country won the award for Best Foreign Language Film (now called Best International Feature Film) two years in a row. France has achieved this three times, as has Italy, and the other two are Sweden, thanks to the talented Ingmar Bergman, and Denmark, the last country to do so in 1987 and 1988. Last year, the Brazilian film Ainda estou aqui took home the statuette and the country's first victory in the category, and with O Agente Secreto, Brazil could join the aforementioned countries and write its name in the history of world cinema. Personally, I think I'll go with Sentimental Value, but given the nominations recently announced and how unpredictable these awards can sometimes be, you never know. Finalmente, las actuaciones son de calidad, especialmente la de Wagner Moura que está también nominado al Oscar (aunque mi favorito para la categoría es Di Caprio) y en esta edición Brasil podría hacer historia. En toda la historia de los Oscars, solamente ocho veces un país ha ganado en dos años consecutivos el premio a Mejor Película Extranjera (ahora llamado Mejor Película Internacional). Francia lo ha conseguido en tres oportunidades, al igual que Italia, y los otros dos son Suecia, gracias al talentoso Ingmar Bergman, y Dinamarca, último país en conseguirlo en 1987 y 1988. El año pasado, la cinta brasilera Ainda estou aqui se llevó la estatuilla y la primera victoria del país en la categoría, y con O Agente Secreto Brasil podría unirse a los países mencionados y escribir su nombre en la historia del cine mundial. En lo personal, creo que me quedo con Sentimental Value, pero dadas las nominaciones publicadas hace poco y lo impredecibles que a veces son estos premios, nunca se sabe.
