Probably for most moviegoers who visit this platform this weekend is special because of the dates associated with the Star Wars saga: May the 4th and Revenge of the 5th. However, for me it is for a different reason, as May the 4th is also the birthday (or would be) of one of the most celebrated, beloved and remembered actresses in film history and one of my favorite actresses of all time: the lovely Audrey Hepburn.

Probablemente para la mayoría de los cinéfilos que visitan esta plataforma este fin de semana sea especial por las fechas asociadas a la saga de Star Wars: May the 4th y Revenge of the 5th. Sin embargo, para mí lo es por una razón diferente, pues el 4 de mayo es también el cumpleaños (o lo sería) de una de las actrices más celebradas, queridas y recordadas de la historia del cine y una de mis actrices favoritas de todos los tiempos: la encantadora Audrey Hepburn.

I originally wanted to do a post about her most remembered roles or about my favorite Audrey movies, but I've done that before, so I preferred to pay some of the debts I had with her and watch one of those few movies of hers that I hadn't seen yet. Two for the Road is a film directed by Stanley Donen and written by Frederic Raphael, starring the aforementioned Audrey Hepburn alongside Albert Finney. It tells the story of a couple, Mark and Joanna, from the time they meet until their tenth wedding anniversary. The film begins with a trip from London to the French Riviera in the midst of which the longtime spouses recall some of their less amicable episodes as the script takes us backwards and forwards to show us the different stages the couple has gone through: the romantic and ideal beginning, the lost youth, the slips of one and the other, marriage, motherhood, professional success, the changes in lifestyle that took them from backpackers who hitchhiked and ate canned food to this wealthy couple who rub shoulders with the top of French society in mansions and expensive restaurants. The title speaks of a road, suggesting a journey, but in reality there are several journeys that overlap in the story: the literal journey along European roads, the Mediterranean, England, France and other places that the couple visits and revisits later; life as a journey that takes us from youth to adulthood; and marriage as a journey, as a journey that can sometimes bring two people closer together, but can also end up separating them.

En un principio quería hacer un post sobre sus papeles más recordados o sobre mis películas favoritas de Audrey, pero ya lo he hecho antes, así que preferí pagar alguna de las deudas que tenía con ella y ver una de esas pocas películas suyas que aún no había visto. Two for the Road es un film dirigido por Stanley Donen y escrito por Frederic Raphael, protagonizado por la ya mencionada Audrey Hepburn junto a Albert Finney. En ella se relata la historia de una pareja, Mark y Joanna, desde que se conocen hasta que cumplen diez años de matrimonio. La cinta inicia con un viaje desde Londres hasta la Riviera francesa en medio del cual, los esposos desde hace bastante tiempo, recuerdan algunos de sus episodios menos amistosos mientras el guion nos lleva de atrás hacia adelante para mostrarnos las distintas etapas por las que ha pasado la pareja: el inicio romántico e ideal, la juventud perdida, los deslices de uno y otro, el matrimonio, la maternidad, el éxito profesional, los cambios en el estilo de vida que los llevó de mochileros que viajaban a dedo y comían enlatados hasta esta pareja adinerada que se codea con lo más alto de la sociedad francesa en mansiones y restaurantes costosos. El título habla de un camino (road), lo que sugiere un viaje, pero en realidad hay varios viajes que se superponen en la historia: el viaje literal por las carreteras europeas, el mediterráneo, Inglaterra, Francia y otros lugares que la pareja visita y revisita después; la vida como un viaje que nos lleva desde la juventud a la adultez; y el matrimonio como un viaje, como un recorrido que a veces puede unir más a dos personas, pero que también puede acabar separándolas.

One of the remarkable things about this story is that it feels like a more honest portrayal of relationships than most romantic comedies and movies present. Mark and Joanna fall in love, yes, but that doesn't make them perfect. On the contrary, it's their mistakes and their differences that make them clash again and again, especially as the years go by. From silly fights to arguments over more important issues like becoming parents or staying together, the couple goes through all the stages of a life together.

Una de las cosas destacadas de esta historia es que parece un retrato más honesto de las relaciones que el que presentan la mayoría de las comedias y películas románticas. Mark y Joanna se enamoran, sí, pero eso no los hace perfectos. Al contrario, son sus errores y sus diferencias los que los hacen chocar una y otra vez, especialmente a medida que van pasando los años. Desde las peleas tontas hasta las discusiones por temas más importantes como el convertirse en padres o mantenerse juntos, la pareja pasa por todas las etapas de una vida en común.

As the film is set in the sixties, the costumes - especially Joanna's - are very striking, as are the decorations of certain spaces, houses, mansions - because Mark is an architect - so in addition to telling a story, the film also portrays an era with its appearance, its music and the social values of the time. But the most entertaining part of the script is the non-linear time travel. Joanna and Mark met on a trip, after a while they traveled together again in a broken down car, when they got married they traveled again with some acquaintances, they traveled again when they became parents and finally they travel together - leaving their daughter at home with a nanny - to a social gathering and all these trips are intertwined without further announcement, highlighting the parallels, the contrasts and the evolution of the characters and the relationship. While some may be confused at first because the transitions are subtle and unmarked, the costume and production design work is key here. In each of these moments Joanna wears a different style of clothing and hairstyle, and each trip is made in a different car. With these two guides it's enough to chronologically order each of these trips and to better understand the reasons for certain claims, phrases or comments made by the protagonists at certain times and where the cracks that threaten to crack a marriage - that was not very solid since the very beginning - are coming from.

Como la película se ambienta en los años sesenta, el vestuario - especialmente el de Joanna - es muy llamativo, al igual que las decoraciones de ciertos espacios, casas, mansiones - porque Mark es arquitecto - así que además de contar una historia, la película nos retrata también una época con su apariencia, su música y los valores sociales del momento. Pero lo más entretenido del guion es el viaje en ese tiempo no lineal. Joanna y Mark se conocieron en un viaje, luego de un tiempo viajaron juntos de nuevo en un auto descompuesto, al casarse volvieron a viajar con unos conocidos, viajaron de nuevo al convertirse en padres y finalmente viajan juntos - dejando a su hija en casa con una niñera - a una reunión social y todos estos viajes se van entrelazando sin mayor anuncio, remarcando los paralelismos, los contrastes y la evolución de los personajes y la relación. Si bien algunos pueden confundirse al inicio porque las transiciones son sutiles y no se marcan, es clave aquí el trabajo de vestuario y el del diseño de producción. En cada uno de estos momentos Joanna lleva un estilo diferente al vestir, al peinarse, y cada viaje es hecho en un automóvil diferente. Con esas dos guías es suficiente para ordenar cronológicamente cada uno de esos viajes y entender mejor el por qué de ciertos reclamos, frases o comentarios que se hacen los protagonistas en algunos momentos y de dónde vienen las grietas que amenazan con resquebrajar un matrimonio que no fue muy sólido desde los mismísimos inicios, por más románticas que sean algunas escenas o por más que queramos defender a los protagonistas.

I think the movie is entertaining, with some funny moments, some more dramatic ones, with a dynamic script, excellent direction and wonderful performances by the main characters, and if some moments or scenes made me a little uncomfortable it was because I judged them -my mistake- from the perspective of these times and not in their original context and all I have to say about that is that fortunately times have changed. Besides they are not weighty details nor do they change the fact that the film is very well done.

Creo que la película es entretenida, con momentos más graciosos, otros más dramáticos, con un guion dinámico, una excelente dirección y maravillosas actuaciones de los protagonistas, y si algunos momentos o escenas me incomodaron un poco fue porque los juzgué - error mío - desde la perspectiva de estos tiempos y no en su contexto original y todo lo que tengo que decir sobre eso es que afortunadamente los tiempos han cambiado. Además no son detalles de peso ni cambian el hecho de que la película está muy bien lograda.

Audrey Hepburn

But as always, or as almost always, I think the best thing about the film is the presence of Audrey Hepburn. At this point I may not be the most objective guy anymore, but every performance of hers I've seen I've liked. Even in Green Mansions (perhaps the worst film of her filmography) Audrey's presence is appreciated. However, it happened to me again with this film that I had the impression that the male figure wasn't up to par with his partner. Audrey Hepburn starred in stories with the Hollywood heartthrobs of the fifties and sixties: Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Anthony Perkins, Burt Lancaster, Gary Cooper, Henry Fonda and with the sole exception of Gregory Peck (with whom she starred in Roman Holiday) I feel that none of the others deserved her (within the film, I mean). Although, it must also be said, as was the custom at the time, Peck was quite a bit older than her in that story that won Hepburn the Oscar. Renowned actress, fashion icon, willful and charitable soul, timeless beauty, charm that leapt off the screen, Audrey Hepburn made an entire generation fell in love with her - and continues to do so from the immortality of cinema - thanks to her grace, talent and sweetness. Elegant and sober, but at the same time accessible and tender, watching her act - especially in her most romantic roles - is a balm for the heart and for that I thank her and commemorate the date of her birth, have you seen any Audrey Hepburn movie? which one is your favorite? Pero como siempre, o como casi siempre, creo que lo mejor de la película es la presencia de Audrey Hepburn. A este punto quizás ya no sea el tipo más objetivo, pero cada interpretación suya que he visto me ha gustado. Hasta en Green Mansions (tal vez la peor película de su filmografía) la presencia de Audrey se agradece. Sin embargo, me volvió a ocurrir con esta cinta que tuve la impresión de que la figura masculina no estaba a la altura de su pareja. Audrey Hepburn protagonizó historias con los galanes de Hollywood de los años cincuenta y sesenta: Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Anthony Perkins, Burt Lancaster, Gary Cooper, Henry Fonda y con la única excepción de Gregory Peck (con quien protagonizó Roman Holiday) siento que ninguno de los otros la merecía (dentro de la película, se entiende). Aunque, también hay que decirlo, tal como era la costumbre en la época, Peck era bastante mayor a ella en esa historia que le valió el Oscar a Hepburn. Actriz de renombre, ícono de la moda, alma voluntariosa y caritativa, belleza atemporal, encanto que saltaba de la pantalla, Audrey Hepburn enamoró a toda una generación - y lo sigue haciendo desde la inmortalidad del cine - gracias a su gracia, talento y dulzura. Elegante y sobria, pero a la vez accesible y tierna, verla actuar - especialmente en sus papeles más románticos - es un bálsamo para el corazón y por eso le agradezco y conmemoro la fecha de su nacimiento, ¿han visto alguna película de Audrey Hepburn? ¿cuál es su favorita?
