Film Review of 28 Years Later

source imdb
28 Years Later is a sequel to the zombie outbreak movie that started with 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). The movie was about a zombie outbreak caused by animal activists who freed animals that carried the Rage virus. 28 years later, the virus is less widespread but the world hasn't recovered yet from it.
The story is about a new group of survivors living in an isolated island settlement, where strict rules are necessary to stay alive. The zombies are less widespread than before but they remain a deadly threat. The main character is a male child that was scavenging the cities with his father while evading zombies. There, they find hints of other survivors and human threats that are more sinister than zombies. Next, the kid is forced to escape the settlement with his sick mother to the infected city. His goal was to find a cure for her sickness. In there, they try to avoid the zombies and find the doctor (Ben Kingsley) who may have the cure for his mother's illness.

The movie focus more on drama and not the action of being chased by zombies in the previous movies. It has a slower pacing maybe because it has a sequel, "The Bone Temple" that will focus more on the doctor and the evil teenage human survivors. Fans who expect an action packed movie may find it boring.
The movie has beautiful visuals showing shots of abandoned cities now reclaimed by nature like the scenes in "The Last of Us". There are also scenes in the wide open forest dominated by green colors of nature.

I feel that the movie's slow pace is boring and will appeal only to long time fans of the 28 series. Not too much action, it shows what happens after the world is destroyed. How humans cope and try to survive. Meanwhile, there are others who are less savory humans that rise and take control. We have seen similar story lines in "The Last of Us" games and TV show and "The Walking Dead". It's a familiar trope among zombie movies.
