Lowriders 💡💡💡💡 + Soundtrack + Trailer.

🔍 What is it about?
This film is set in the most deprived areas of Los Angeles, amidst graffiti, cars, and lowriders (which, although essentially automobiles, have a very different and peculiar purpose). Into this world steps Danny, a daring artist who seeks to leave his graffiti mark in the most inaccessible places. However, his true calling is urban art.
At the opposite pole is Danny's father, Miguel, apparently a second-generation migrant abroad, who runs his auto body shop and also has a hobby of dealing and tuning lowrider-style cars.
Amidst this already conflicted relationship, three more characters appear: Miguel's partner, their daughter, and finally Ghost, Miguel's son and Danny's brother, who is key to the plot's development. The entire narrative weight of the film rests on these three characters.

🎥 Why watch it?
This film is steeped in the migrant culture of Los Angeles, and although stereotypes are the order of the day, in some small flashes it shows a reality beyond a simple anecdote. The family drama has different layers that the film unfolds: at times, the universal story of intergenerational drama; at others, romantic dramas; and at others, family ones. However, the lighting throughout the entire runtime is truly surprising, and the music also greatly helps the story, reinforcing the voids felt in certain passages. The performance of the nominee for major awards (Demián Bichir) feels and conveys verisimilitude.

💡 What nobody tells you
The director is the Peruvian Ricardo de Montreuil, who invited two absolute legends to work as executive producers: the iconic photographer Estevan Oriol and the renowned tattoo and design artist Mister Cartoon. These guests helped select locations, personally chose each of the cars that appear on screen, oversaw the curation of visual and artistic products, and invited various local artists from East Los Angeles to create a visual context represented in the tattoos, graffiti, murals, and airbrushing seen on screen, trying to make every visual detail authentic and not a simple Hollywood cliché (did they succeed?).
During filming, there was a very particular fact: two of the characters who act as father and son in the film—that is, )Miguel (Demián Bichir) and Ghost (Theo Rossi))actually did not establish personal contact before filming. That is, the discomfort, distance, and some kind of friction and tension seen in the film were, in reality, the lack of contact between these two actors (although, with their acting qualities, they would surely be at a good level even if that hadn't happened), The director's shrewdness in taking advantage of that genuine situation enriches the film's plot.
Despite the name Lowriders, it is a nod to a whole type of identity that brought together a large migrant population and new-generation migrants with the weight and cultural heritage this represents, coupled with the visual expression of urban art or graffiti, which generates other relationships of belonging and pride in new generations of migrants.
The producers who bet on this project were three: Blumhouse Productions (moving a little away from its characteristic "B-series" films), Imagine Entertainment, and Telemundo Films. The budget allocated for this purpose was about 5 million dollars.

🎭 Estilo
🎭 Style
In appearance, this film is bathed in the roar of engines, the shine of cars, the smell of spray paint, and the metallic sound of tools. But beneath that layer of chrome and tires lies a family drama that hurts. The film takes loyalty, identity, and traditions as the pillars of a story that intertwines the fate of its characters with the universe of lowriders.

💬 Opinion
Lowriders presents itself as a tribute to lowrider culture and its legendary figures. But, seen with critical eyes, the film suffers from a narrative that, as ambitious as its intentions may be, falls time and again into the most trite commonplaces of family drama.
The story does not surprise. It circles around conflicts that fail to transcend either emotionally or narratively. The script is, in essence, outdated. And not because of its release date, but because its structure is predictable and lacks risk. The lowrider cars, which should be the visual and symbolic soul of the story, are reduced to a shiny backdrop, not to the engine of the plot. The film relies on widely known cultural stereotypes (and it does seek verisimilitude advisors, mind you), but it fails to delve into the humanity or diversity of experiences that live behind them. The result is an experience that feels superficial and falls short of its hour-and-a-half runtime.
Structurally, the film takes a while to take off. The first lowrider with narrative weight appears around minute 30. Until then, everything is context. That said, there are technical successes: the initial chase sequence is well choreographed and effectively situates the urban environment. The interior shots of the cars show an aesthetic care that tries to capture the intimacy of the space. And the lighting (much of the film takes place at night or in twilight) achieves an attractive visual effect; illuminated faces, city reflections, and the shine of paint create a coherent and pleasant atmosphere. But aesthetic pleasure is not enough. It cannot replace the lack of dramatic substance.
The film tries to navigate between cultural representation and a universal message, but ends up in no man's land. It does not delve into cultural identity nor connect with an emotional arc that truly suits it. It is as if it wanted to dress two different realities without managing to make them fit. The result: it runs, but does not arrive.
In short, Lowriders offers a polished aesthetic and an evident respect for its theme, but it fails to tell a story worth remembering.
This, of course, is a personal opinion.
Cinema is subjective, and each viewer can draw their own conclusions.
But reading and considering different perspectives always enriches our way of understanding the seventh art as reality itself.
