[Movie] Could you fall in love with your partner’s lover? / ¿Podrías enamorarte del amante de tu pareja? | In the Mood for Love | R: 81

🔍 What is it about?
This film, directed by Wong Kar-wai, transports us to a 1962 Hong Kong, where Chow Mo-wan, a newspaper editor, and Su Li-zhen, a secretary, move on the same day into adjacent apartments in a building whose inhabitants are very close. Both are married, but their respective spouses spend most of their time away from home due to their jobs, which creates different voids that slowly bring them closer.
Because of this shared loneliness, Chow and Li-zhen begin to run into each other frequently, developing a friendship based on everyday life, such as sharing noodle dinners, trivial conversations, and a taste for serialized novels. However, this closeness takes an unexpected turn when both discover that their partners are being unfaithful to them... and that they are very likely having an affair with each other.
Hurt and completely thrown off, instead of seeking revenge or giving in to passion, they decide to maintain a strictly platonic relationship. Together they try to understand how that betrayal could have begun, realistically imagining what those hypothetical conversations would have been like in order to understand their spouses' mindset. Throughout this process, they must fight against their own feelings that stalk them, establishing a silent pact not to become the same people who have hurt them.
What makes this film special is that it is not about what happened, but about what could have been. It is a masterpiece of the elegance of what is communicated with a glance, a gesture, or a silence.

🎥 Why watch it?
One should watch In the Mood for Love because it finds emotion in what is barely hinted at, for example, a lingering glance, a casual encounter, a silence loaded with meaning. The director builds a story of contained feelings, in which desire, melancholy, and closeness are expressed more through gestures than words.
Its strength also lies in the way it turns every image into a visual experience. The music, the colors, the handling of narrow spaces, and the carefully repeated movements wrap the film in an elegant and nostalgic atmosphere. The protagonists offer meticulous and intense performances, capable of conveying everything the characters do not dare to say.

💡 What nobody tells you
Su Li-zhen appears in more than 40 different qipaos, and each one serves a narrative function. Their high collars, fitted cuts, and narrow sleeves not only highlight the character's elegance; they also suggest the control and social repression of the era. Since the film never marks the passage of time with dates or calendars, the dresses become its visual clock; each change announces that the days are advancing, even though everything seems to repeat itself.
We never fully see the faces of the unfaithful partners. Director Wong Kar-wai keeps them off-screen, among shadows, reflections, backs, and voices that are barely heard. He does not seek to present them as fully developed characters, but as absent presences; what matters is not who they are, but the void they leave in the protagonists' lives. Within their own marriages, they seem like ghosts; they are there, but emotionally they have already disappeared.
On many occasions, Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung knew their dialogue or the situation only a few hours before filming. That freedom allowed the scenes in which their characters imitate their respective partners to emerge with an almost spontaneous tension. By portraying a betrayal they are still trying to understand, the actors not only interpret their characters' confusion, they discover it at the same moment. From there is born that powerful discomfort, as if emotion could overflow the limits of fiction.
The building where they live is made up of narrow, almost labyrinthine hallways and staircases. Mark Lee Ping-bin takes advantage of that architecture to physically bring the characters closer every time they meet. They do not need to seek each other out; it is the space itself that forces them to share frames, brushes, and silences. Thus, the building becomes a kind of choreography of destiny; while they try to maintain the distance imposed by moral norms, the hallways seem to push them again and again toward intimacy.

🎭 Estilo
🎭 Style
In the Mood for Love does not rely on a plot full of twists or explanatory dialogue. Its priority is another, to make you feel (and it succeeds) melancholy, desire, and longing through repeated images, prolonged silences, and encounters that seem to remain suspended in time. The story advances not so much through what happens as through what its characters keep silent.
Director Wong Kar-wai takes resources from classic film noir (shadows, rain, neon reflected in puddles, smoke, and claustrophobic framing), but uses them to explore intimacy and repressed desire, not crime. Here, the mystery is not discovering a culprit, but trying to understand the human heart.
Sustained glances, a button being fastened, or a shared plate say more than any conversation. Mirrors, doors, and windows also place the viewer in the position of a voyeur, as if spying on a life that never finishes showing itself completely.
Slow motion stretches moments and allows you to savor the tension of each fleeting encounter. Along with saturated colors (reds, greens, and golds) and Su Li-zhen's elegant qipaos, it creates a world that seems like a beautiful and painful memory at the same time. However, the film never abandons everyday life: rain, steam from food stalls, a typewriter, or a distant radio keep its feet on the ground. That blend of the ordinary and the sublime is what defines the essence of Wong Kar-wai's cinema.

💬 Opinion
In these times when everything is wanted to be shown, explained, and resolved immediately, Wong Kar-wai chooses suggestion. Its greatest virtue lies precisely in what it does not say or show; it leaves spaces for the viewer to complete the silences, the glances, and the emotions that never quite manage to be expressed.
The film does not state that its characters are sad; it makes us feel it in the repetition of a melody, in the steam of a plate of noodles, or in a hand that stops before touching another. Containment thus becomes a form of eroticism, but also the origin of its tragedy. Every repressed gesture weighs as much as a confession.
In the Mood for Love captures one of the most painful questions of human experience: what would have happened if...
More than telling the story of two people who decide not to betray their principles, it portrays the opportunities we let slip by out of fear, conviction, or decency, and the echo those decisions can leave for years.
Everything in the film seems to respond to that emotion. The music, Maggie Cheung's dresses, the narrow hallways, the rain, and the carefully composed framing turn desire into an almost claustrophobic experience. There are no decorative elements; every image and every note contribute to building the melancholy beauty of a time that is escaping.
