Released in 1979, this film smells of diesel and settles into a near, dystopian future.
Max is a warrior, a hunter, a savage of the asphalt and a stoic officer of the Main Force Patrol.
It is, in essence, a thriller of real car chases that explores the clash between law and the chaos of road predators. The narrative thread is just one; violence for violence's sake.

Because, believe it or not, there was a time when car chases were done with real cars; many roared, metal screeched and sparks flew when they crashed into each other.
Speed was synonymous with combustion power.

This is the origin, where the Max we would meet in later sequels is born: a warrior in a world still somewhat stable, where the collapse still loomed far away.

💡 Lo que nadie te cuenta

Quien encarna a Max es Mel Gibson, que ya había rodado dos películas antes, pero no tenía fama y su rostro no era reconocido. Mucho menos después de que, en una pelea en un bar de carretera la noche anterior a las pruebas de cámara, se presentara en un estado calamitoso.
Sin dudarlo, le asignaron uno de los papeles de los psicópatas del camino. Pocos días después, cuando la inflamación y las heridas sanaron un poco, Gibson volvió para leer el papel que le habían asignado. Pero su aspecto físico y su registro frente a cámara hicieron que George Miller (director de la cinta) terminara decantándose por darle el papel de Max Rockatansky. Y así nace el héroe de una saga.

Lo sé: si eres animalista, cuando salieron los trajes negros de la Main Force Patrol (MFP), la policía a la que pertenece Max, cerraste muy, muy duro los ojitos al ver tanto cuero junto. Tranquilos; ábranlos bien, aspiren hondo y luego suéltenlo suavemente. Resulta que no era cuero; era ropa de vinilo negro (PVC). El presupuesto era tan ajustado que obligó a buscar alternativas (sí, muchos se habrían inclinado por el algodón negro, qué más da) y descubrieron que las tiendas de fetichismo y lencería de Melbourne estaban a muy buen precio.

Aunque ustedes no lo crean, muchas de las películas que han visto (y muy seguramente verán) están dobladas de nuevo en un estudio de grabación. Si no, piensen en una gran ciudad a las tres de la tarde con el tráfico del infierno; no hay micrófono que aísle esos sonidos. Entonces, muchos de esos diálogos se doblan en estudio. Bueno, esta cinta no es la excepción. Aunque en el desierto australiano más bien hay poco tráfico, resulta que el acento australiano no gustó a los realizadores porque sonaba muy extranjero y muchos creyeron que era incomprensible para el público. La solución; volver a doblar todos los personajes con artistas de voz neutral y de fácil comprensión para los espectadores.

Por lo general, los productos audiovisuales exitosos tienden a tener un altísimo presupuesto. Pues Mad Max tenía un presupuesto de apenas 400.000 dólares australianos. Lo interesante es que recaudó más de 100 millones de dólares en todo el mundo. Y lo mejor; se llevó el premio Guinness Récords como la película independiente más rentable de la historia del cine. Solo 20 años después, The Blair Witch Project (El Proyecto de la Bruja de Blair, 1999) le arrebataría el récord.

💡 What no one tells you

The one who plays Max is Mel Gibson, who had already shot two films before, but had no fame and his face was not recognized. Even less so after, in a fight at a roadside bar the night before the camera tests, he showed up in a calamitous state.
Without hesitation, they assigned him one of the roles of the road psychopaths. A few days later, when the swelling and wounds had healed a little, Gibson came back to read for the role he had been assigned. But his physical appearance and his on-camera presence made George Miller (the film's director) end up choosing him for the role of Max Rockatansky. And so the hero of a saga is born.

I know: if you're an animal lover, when the black suits of the Main Force Patrol (MFP), the police force Max belongs to, appeared, you closed your eyes very, very tightly at seeing so much leather together. Relax: open them wide, take a deep breath and then let it out gently. It turns out it wasn't leather; it was black vinyl clothing (PVC). The budget was so tight that it forced them to look for alternatives (yes, many would have gone for black cotton, whatever) and they discovered that fetish and lingerie shops in Melbourne were very cheap.

Believe it or not, many of the films you've seen (and very likely will see) are re-dubbed in a recording studio. If not, think of a big city at three in the afternoon with hellish traffic; there's no microphone that can isolate those sounds. So many of those dialogues are dubbed in a studio. Well, this film is no exception. Although in the Australian desert there's rather little traffic, it turns out the Australian accent didn't please the filmmakers because it sounded too foreign and many thought it was incomprehensible to the public. The solution; re-dub all the characters with voice artists with a neutral accent and easy for viewers to understand.

In general, successful audiovisual products tend to have a very high budget. Well, Mad Max had a budget of just 400,000 Australian dollars. The interesting thing is that it grossed more than 100 million dollars worldwide. And best of all; it won the Guinness World Record as the most profitable independent film in cinema history. Only 20 years later, The Blair Witch Project (1999) would take the record away from it.

🎭 Estilo

Una parte del efecto del tiempo sobre las obras precursoras de estilos es que, al hacer una revisión, estas desvelan su verdadera alma. Sin embargo, si todo se resumiera a etiquetas comerciales, el estilo en el que encaja es el neo-wéstern distópico; es decir, una cinta que muestra los conflictos propios de un wéstern pero ubicados en otro tiempo, mientras sus dinámicas son las mismas; el arquetipo del pistolero solitario o el sheriff cansado que quiere dejar la violencia pero que, en sus actos ruines, supera a quienes se ve obligado a combatir; o los villanos, que son los clásicos forajidos o bandidos a caballo (motorizados, en este caso) que aterrorizan a los pueblos fronterizos. Los escenarios desérticos del viejo oeste, donde las bolas de heno hacían las delicias de los escenarios mientras pasaba generalmente una iguana o una tortuga, se trasladan a las solitarias autopistas donde se dan los verdaderos duelos de rugientes monstruos de metal y gasoil.

🎭 Style

A part of the effect of time on precursor works of styles is that, upon review, they reveal their true soul. However, if everything were reduced to commercial labels, the style it fits into is the dystopian neo-western; that is, a film that shows the conflicts of a western but set in another time, while its dynamics are the same: the archetype of the lone gunman or the tired sheriff who wants to leave violence behind but who, in his vile acts, surpasses those he is forced to fight; or the villains, who are the classic outlaws or bandits on horseback (motorized, in this case) who terrorize frontier towns. The desert landscapes of the old west, where tumbleweeds delighted the scenery while usually an iguana or a tortoise passed by, are transferred to the lonely highways where true duels of roaring metal and diesel monsters take place.

💬 Opinión

Esta es una de esas películas de las cuales te han hablado tanto que, cuando la vas a ver, nunca va a estar al mismo nivel de lo que te dijeron. Son de esas cintas que, o son mucho mejores o son mucho peores. La vi por un comentario que alguien hizo elogiando sus “auténticas persecuciones de autos”, no como las que estamos viendo ahora, donde cuando se chocan los autos solo salen ceros y unos (aludiendo al contenido sintético, chroma key o CGI). Y, por supuesto, tenían mucha razón: los autos se sentían reales y transmitían desde la pantalla una sensación de peligro real. Y ese es un punto más a favor de la película. Ahora, la cinta es lenta, y es un constante juego de chistes malos y actos de heroísmo que no siempre definen el buen curso de la película. La introducción a la acción se demora demasiado mientras nos muestran una radiografía de la vida de aquel “llanero solitario” acompañado de esposa, hijo y un saxofón (porque a finales de los setenta los saxofones estaban en promoción y más económicos si estaban en combo con luces azules, seguramente...). Ironías aparte, la cinta no es buena y está sobrevalorada (en la opinión subjetiva de un total ignorante, eso es obvio). Sin embargo, es la piedra angular de lo que se construirá a partir de este film de bajo presupuesto, con un guión lleno de vacíos y una trama coja envuelta en tela de PVC negro. Entonces, esta película da el contexto de la saga que está por desarrollarse y es allí donde radica la importancia de esta obra cinematográfica.

💬 Opinion

This is one of those films you've heard so much about that when you finally watch it, it will never be at the same level as what you were told. They are the kind of films that are either much better or much worse. I watched it because of a comment someone made praising its "authentic car chases", not like the ones we see now, where when cars crash only zeros and ones come out (alluding to synthetic content, chroma key or CGI). And of course, they were absolutely right; the cars felt real and transmitted a sense of real danger from the screen. And that's a point in the film's favor. Now, the film is slow, and it's a constant mix of bad jokes and acts of heroism that don't always define the good course of the film. The introduction to the action takes too long while they show us an x-ray of the life of that "lone ranger" accompanied by wife, son and a saxophone (because at the end of the seventies saxophones were on sale and cheaper if they came in a combo with blue lights, surely...). All irony aside, the film is not good and is overrated (in the subjective opinion of a total ignoramus, that's obvious). However, it is the cornerstone of what will be built from this low-budget film, with a script full of holes and a lame plot wrapped in black PVC fabric. So, this film gives the context of the saga that is yet to be developed and that's where the importance of this cinematographic work lies.
