🎬📹 Vortex [ENG-ESP] 📹🎬
I recently saw Vortex, Gaspar Noe's latest film, and, being in my opinion the best film he has made, I can't stop talking about the mastery with which the director tells this devastating and realistic story.
But first, a bit of context, because coming from Gaspar Noe, you can expect something different from the film. The director with films like Love, Climax, Irreversible and Enter the void has earned to be a reference man when talking about cinema, but why? Because of the crude (and in my opinion unnecessary) way in which he shows a somewhat exaggerated reality. Technically the director has incredible shots and ideas that any other director could only dream of or try to imitate, an example of that are the pictures he has made for magazines, the intro of his movie Climax or the whole Enter The Void movie, but then he is too pretentious and exaggerated, showing us things like a close-up of a penis finishing or a rape in real time. After all that and his drug addiction, Noe "relaxes" a little and brings us his "calmer" work, being this a kind of homage to old age and disease, being destructive and every now and then beautiful.
Hace poco vi Vortex, la última película de Gaspar Noe, y, siendo en mi opinión la mejor película que ha hecho, no puedo dejar de hablar de la maestría con la que el director relata esta devastadora y realista historia
Pero antes, un poco de contexto, ya que viniendo de Gaspar Noe, puedes esperar algo diferente de la película. El director con películas como Love, Climax, Irreversible y Enter the void se ha ganado ser un hombre de referencia a la hora de hablar del cine, pero, ¿por qué? Por la forma cruda (y a mi parecer innecesaria) en la que muestra una realidad un poco exagerada. Técnicamente el director tiene planos e ideas increíbles que cualquier otro director solo podría soñar o tratar de imitar, un ejemplo de eso son las fotos que ha hecho para revistas, el intro de su película Climax o de por si toda la película de Enter The Void, pero después peca de querer ser demasiado pretencioso y exagerado, mostrándonos cosas como un primer plano de un pene acabando o una violación a tiempo real. Pasado todo eso y su adicción a las drogas, Noe se “relaja” un poco y nos trae su obra más “calmada”, siendo esta un tipo de homenaje a la vejez y a la enfermedad, siendo destructiva y cada cierto tiempo hermosa.
Vortex is the story of the last days of life of an elderly couple living alone. The father, played by Dario Argento, and the mother, played by Francoise Lebrun, deliver a performance so incredible that at times I seriously thought they were not acting. The father, who suffers from stress and heart attacks, and the mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's, are the absolute protagonists of a film that is small in size, with no more than five characters or four locations. And that we never stop watching since Gaspar Noe again uses the split screen resource to show us on one side the father's day to day life while on the other side he shows us the mother's day to day life, creating a context that can work for a suspenseful scene that can even remind us of life itself.
Vortex es la historia de los últimos días de vida de una pareja de ancianos que viven solos. El padre, interpretado por Dario Argento, y la madre, interpretada por Francoise Lebrun, entregan una actuación tan increíble que en momentos en serio pensé que no estaban actuando. El padre, que sufre de la tensión y de ataques al corazón, y la madre, que sufre de Alzheimer, son los absolutos protagonistas de una película que en dimensiones es pequeña ya que no llega a tener más de cinco personajes o cuatro locaciones. Y que nunca dejamos de ver ya que Gaspar Noe vuelve a usar el recurso de la pantalla dividida para mostrarnos por un lado el día a día del padre mientras que por otro lado nos muestra el día a día de la madre, creando así contexto que puede funcionar para una escena de suspenso que incluso puede recordar a la vida misma
He had already used this split screen resource in his predecessor work, Lux AEterna, but in Vortex he multiplies it a thousand times and uses it in a more superb way, demonstrating that he is mature enough to leave the camera in one place while the other half moves strongly while some character does something.
Este recurso de pantalla dividida ya lo había usado en su obra predecesora, Lux AEterna, pero en Vortex lo multiplica por mil y lo utiliza de forma más soberbia, demostrando que ya tiene la madurez suficiente como para dejar la cámara plantada en un sitio mientras la otra mitad se mueve fuertemente mientras algún personaje hace alguna cosa.
I could talk about many technical and scripted things about Vortex, such as the low lighting, the almost claustrophobic spaces it shows us, the "drugs" the characters take or the analogies that are touched upon in the film, but I leave that aside to talk about something much more personal: my perspective. With a father who suffers from stress and a grandfather who had Alzheimer's, I found this film difficult to watch but truly captivating. It felt raw like the few times I got to see my grandfather, or like the times I've heard the arguments between my grandmother and my aunts, it felt strong because it felt real, and, as Gaspar Noe has said in his previous works, it felt like growing old is not worth it, since "time destroys everything".
De Vortex podría hablar de muchas cosas técnicas y de guion, cómo la poca iluminación, los espacios casi claustrofóbicos que nos muestra, las “drogas” que toman los personajes o las analogías que se tocan en la película, pero dejo eso de lado para hablar de algo mucho más personal: mi perspectiva. Con un padre que sufre de la tensión y un abuelo que tuvo Alzheimer, esta película se me hizo difícil de ver pero realmente cautivadora. Se sintió cruda como las pocas veces que llegue a ver a mi abuelo, o cómo las veces que he escuchado las discusiones entre mi abuela y mis tías, se sintió fuerte porque se sintió real, y, cómo ya ha dicho Gaspar Noe en sus anteriores obras, se sintió como si envejecer no vale la pena, ya que “el tiempo lo destruye todo”.
