Summerland || Recoloring a life affected and tossed by war

The image of the woman who disassembled the paper attached to the typewriter in front of her, took it out, crumpled it and replaced it with a new one and said "I have to start again, I have to start all over again" was one of the films with the best beginning among the drama films I watched. The beginning of the film is the story of Alice Lamp and Frank's lives that intersect as a result of coincidences during the second world war.

The 2020 film Summerland is about a woman who has lost her enthusiasm for life for various reasons and a child who has been tossed by the war, which is the cruelest aspect of life, and they have to live in the same house after their lives intersect in some way.

It was great to watch the acting of Gemma Arterton, who plays Alice Lamp, and Lucas Bond, who plays Frank, the child actor, and their dialogues with each other. It reminded me of the film Gifted, which I watched earlier this month.

It was great to watch the dialogues of Mckenna Grace, who gave life to the 7-year-old Marry character in Gifted, and Chris Evans, who gave life to the character of Frank Adler. Although there is a time and place difference between the film Summerland, both films feature children who have to face the bitter side of life at an early age. In Gifted, an adult man has to deal with a girl child, while in Summerland, an adult woman has to deal with a boy child.

The reason why I compare two films with different stories is the dialogues of adult characters with child actors. When I compare my own childhood and the time of children nowadays, we used to ask questions to satisfy our curiosity and form our opinions according to the answers given. But the child actors in the film Summerland and the film Gifted, which I liken to it, can talk and discuss the ideas they have formed in themselves with the adults closest to them and reveal their own characters.

After watching the film Gifted, I did a short research on the other films of Mckenna Grace, who gives life to the character of Mary. I think I will do research on the other films of Lucas Bond, the child actor who gives life to the character of Frank, with the effect of watching the film Summerland.

Apart from the dialogues, Summerland was a great production in terms of its plot, its processing and the mystery that was preserved until the last scenes. Despite the fact that the war radically changed and affected the life of a child, the subject of war is very little covered in the film and is almost never shown. Gemma Arterton as Alice, a writer who devotes herself to her work and gets on badly with everyone around her, mesmerised me with her performance both at the beginning and as the film progressed.

Sometimes choosing to remain silent and not to speak about the facts and pretend that something that exists does not exist can cause an explosion after a while. Although this explosion is not a bomb, it will certainly have the same effect.
